One is a handheld gaming device, the other is an iPod that you can download some games and other applications to, most of which are terrible.

Ha, thats a pretty great chart comparison. Pretty much makes the decision a no-brainer.

#8 Posted by MattyFTM (14432 posts) -

It completely deppends on what your looking for. A decent MP3 player with limited gaming support = iPod Touch. An excellent games console with limited MP3 support = DS.

The answer to this question seems fairly obvious.....it all depends on what you are looking for.

That and double the screenage.

Hey, that's right, iPhone is one of few platforms that still hasn't received a Symphony of the Night port! But yeah, it really does depend what you're looking for. If you only want to play games, DS. If you might like to make phone calls, watch movies, or do many other things, you could consider an iPhone-touch thingy.

#13 Posted by The_Dude (798 posts) -

I have both, and it looks like some of these people doing comparisons either just hate apple, or have never used an Ipod touch, or Iphone. To be honest, if you want something that plays games, go with the DS by all means. However, if you want an extremely versatile tool that has many apps (that are far from useless) has a great, and very fast web browser, very good video playback, and obviously all the ipod stuff with it, then get the touch.

Castlevania is important to the survival of a console.  Every console that has failed has no commercial version of Castlevania.  The Saturn in Japan has Castlevania, but the world wide release had the Playstation version.  The Sega Master System had no Castlevania game, a sign of its limited success.  Atari2600 had no castlevania, meeting the same numbers as the Master System and all the other consoles during that time failed and had no Castlevania.  TG16 was successful in Japan, had Castlevania, but the world release did not have Castlevania.

Therefore, iphone/ipod touch = failure gaming platform.

I use to be able to deterime the issue with Square Soft and the Final Fantasy series, but, they are now Square Enix, therefore not effecting such things.

If I was trapped on a deserted island and could choose between the devices? iTouch for sure, but since I have an iPod, then I'd go for the DSi. The iTouch does have some really good games though, but I'd say the app store will end up being the same quality as DSiWare, but with shorter games.

Name them for us?
#17 Posted by DJ_Lae (629 posts) -

DSiWare seems like it's trying to ape the App Store, but with higher prices and shoddier content. I'll wait a few months to see how that shapes up, but I'd imagine the restrictions are ridiculous when it comes to Nintendo's service.

Consequently, I see much more stuff on the App Store. More crap, certainly, but also more good stuff. Also more useful apps that aren't games, like task managers and exercise trackers and things like that.

Also, the web browser on the iPhone/iPod Touch is vastly superior to the DSi's. Yes, both are kind of clunky compared to a real computer, but I'd much rather use an iPod Touch on the go.

#18 Posted by Snuffy (146 posts) -

iPods are not limited to Apple's bullshit.  They support many different formats and there's different plug-ins for different music players that allow you to hook up your iPod and get music that way.  Winamp is a good example of this.  Other than that, I thought the chart was good.  Castlevania row made me laugh.  :3

iTouch is mostly for music.  DSi is mostly for gaming.  :P

#19 Posted by The_Dude (798 posts) -

Another thing, the touch does come with a one year warranty free of charge, and (at least from my experience) apples customer support is extremely helpful.

Just gonna pop my own two cents in here, addressing Godwind. The iTouch/iPhone web browser is by no means crap. It's pretty damn good, actually.

#22 Posted by raven_squad (438 posts) -

I can think of three games that dont blow on iPhone. Silent Hill: The Escape, Crash Nitro Carts, and Super Monkey Ball. The rest are just standard faire cell phone games that have a bit better visuals and cost an extra $7...like Tetris...

#23 Posted by mattysen (822 posts) -

TBH, I reckon, the Iphone will out take the PSP and DS (This coming from a guy who owns all 3). I mean the DS has had some amazing games. But its had much more fucking tat than the iphone! Come on, its been what? 3 Years? Jesus give the iphone a break!

The iphone is easly much better hardwear, and everything not game related is way better on the iphone. I really am not a fanboy of the iphone but when most games are 10% of the price of a regular DS game, how can you honestly compare? Some games probley deserve the full monty price tag. Quite frankly, most DS games dont.

Rolando, Hero of Sparta, Fast & Furious. All fine choices. I hate the living shit out of regular moblie games so dont even compare them!

OK im blatenly just bitching on here. But the iphone doesnt deserve the bad mouth over the shit that comes out on the DS...
#24 Posted by Edgar (182 posts) -

Isn't Rolando supposed to be pretty good?

#25 Posted by raven_squad (438 posts) -

Ok, three more, none of which sound remotely appealing honestly. Fast and Furious? Really?

A list could be made right now of very high quality titles on the DS that would absolutely consume the thread.

I've even got an iPhone, like it, but its nothing more then a nifty cellphone. I couldnt imagine thinking an iPod touch would be of more value then a DS though...

Possibly true.  Although I could be slamming on Apple.  I don't hate Apple, just hate what they do to people.  As far as my Sister and her friends are, they are nice.  When it comes to computers, they get really snobby about it.

I like how "plays castevania" was a category. DSi is a gaming system, and itouch is music THEN games

DSi is a better gaming system. iPod Touch is a better multi-media system.

If you can remeber when the DS launched it pretty much had nothing but mario 64 for about a year or so. And I know Fast and Furious sounds like a joke but the IGN score of 8.5 is not a lie. On top of that there only like £3 so i quite like my bargin bin

I don't see why the comparison is needed.

I want neither, so I don't really care.

Actually, in the first year of the DS's life it had Trauma Center, Mario Kart DS, Super Mario 64 DS, Trace Memory, Advance Wars Dual Strike, Feel the Magic, WarioWare Touched, and many many others. I'd take any of those over the best iPhone game.. :S

I'm not against the iPod touch (quite the opposite as I own an iPhone), but when someone asks on a gaming site which I would get, Im definitely going to say DSi. The DS has some truly amazing games that noone should miss, and, as of now, the iPod touch doesnt. If/when it does have some great games, I'll reccommend it aswell.

Yeah Im not aganist the DS, but I AM with the DSi because of its poor multi-media specs since thats what there advertising. Anyway the DS is a better consle hands down for games. DSi to stop everything else..NO
#37 Posted by BrockSampson (299 posts) -

I can't believe no one else called out that "comparison".

"yes but limited to apples bullshit"

It plays regular old MP3 and DRM.

And the web browser is easily the best portable browser out there. I use it all day and it is great.

On the other hand the DS is a gaming system. The iTouch (Official Name?) is a multimedia device that can play videogames and carry out literally hundreds if not thousands of other tasks.

So yeah, DS wins as a gaming system. But its hard to deny the iTouch and Iphone own the multimedia market right now. And rightly so.

So say we all?
