As Summer Games Done Quick speedrun marathon winds down, now seems like a good time to organize a collection of every speedrun, every time, and our favorites from this past week of gaming.

[Watch the Bonus Stream here]

Redditors of /r/Speedrun have diligently organized a nice list of each run from SGDQ, and for the convenience of everyone at Giant Bomb dot com, it will all be combined here and filled out. As with AGDQ, special thanks must go to Reddit user suudo and many others who have contributed so much.

SGDQ is a huge marathon; so, if you have seen or heard about a particular run that you enjoyed or moment of note, it would be fantastic you could share it here. Then it can all be added to the list so that every member can come in and easily find the best from this great gaming marathon.

If you enjoy these runs, I hope you will consider donating to Summer Games Done Quick's chosen charity, Doctors Without Borders. You can donate in thanks for their time and effort and help support a worthy cause. Hopefully you will get a lot of entertainment out of these runs and give what you can. :)

I've missed a lot honestly. But from what I have seen. Super Meat Boy was impressive from a skill perspective. I wanna be the boshy was fun because the runner was enjoyable. ZZT was short but sweet and highly entertaining. I didn't see it but I'm SURE siglemic's Super Mario 64 run was amazing as it always is. I'm also pretty confident Metal Wolf chaos will get a lot of votes from people.

Nice work on the list. I really enjoyed hanging out with you guys in the chat. I'm currently rewatching stuff I've missed.

Also, my the top three runs that I saw were:

  • Super Meat Boy - Blindfolded
  • System Shock 2
  • Duke Nukem II

Thanks for this! I've missed most of it, and am eternally grateful for your work!

EDIT: Yes, I can't stress enough how amazing Metal Wolf Chaos is, and I missed like half of the run.

Oh! And if people could remember to place the name of race winners or record times in Spoilers, that would help people avoid being spoiled if they want to go into runs fresh. Thus why I blacked out times unless people want to see them. :)

My favorite thing about the Yoshi thing (I've only seen the youtube vid) was that none of them knew who Jeff was. In fact, all they knew was that he was a guy who HATED Yoshi and then compared him to himself (his gamespot days).

It was amazing. I kinda wish somebody had altered their screens with an endless loop of all of Jeff's anti-yoshi moments. Also seeing this made my night/day.

Metal Wolf Chaos is the first one everyone should watch. All the glitch runs are also great cause they show how to break the game and often short.

Great, thanks for doing this! I've already managed to see most of what I was interested in, including the 5+ hour Skyward Sword run (That one was pretty fun, even for being as long as it was, because the runners kept the talk going through all of it) but there are still some things I need to check out so this is useful.

I'm still catching up on most of the runs but the Super Mario World race was pretty fantastic. That and the Skyward Sword run was entertaining and interesting to watch and listen to. So far a lot of the stuff I've been interested in has been super low energy and not great on the commentating side, which is a bummer. Definitely some gems in there, though.

If you like entertaining commentary, I really enjoyed the commentary for Half Life 2, Super Metroid, Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, and Paper Mario. I'm sure there are some others, as well.

Yeah, this was a bit of a problem for me too. I was mostly interested in the N64 stuff which seemed to largely not have the best commentators (except SM64).

I am actually finally going back through a bunch of AGDQ stuff I missed (most of the Awful games segments in particular), I'll make it to this stuff eventually. It's all REALLY good for getting through grinding/side-questing in FFX.

The FFVI Sketch Glitch run time stamp they posted on Reddit is a little bit off. At http://www.twitch.tv/speeddemosarchivesda/b/542806334?t=1h35m0s you get the introduction to the segment.

Yeah, I did my own timestamp for the run, but I'll add a Sketch Glitch segment link for those who might be interested in it.

Let me know if there are any other entries which might benefit from their start time being adjusted. :)

I'm going to do something different to recommending a run, I'm going to recommend a run to not watch - Do not watch the Ecco run, there were some cool tricks, but the run sucked :(

I spent way too much time watching the stream this week and screwed up my sleeping pattern as a result. Hurray! Here's a few of the runs that I particularly liked:

Longggggggggggggg runs (> 2 hours)

  • Madworld ( Lazerlong explains his speedrun strats well while doing the equivalent of a speedrun marathon with the Wii controller)
  • Metal Wolf Chaos ( Michael is the original Bad Dude)

Medium runs (~ an hour)

Short runs (< an hour)

  • Super Monkey Ball 2 (This run was bananas :^) )
  • Jet Grind Radio HD ( The runner and couch were really funny)
  • Blasto! ( A standing achievement in 90s' programming)
  • Marble Madness ( 5 minutes of ball-slapping action)
  • I wanna be the Boshy ( No more jumpscares edition)
  • Bubsy in "Fuck you Bubsy you piece of shit" (The couch just spend the 20 or so minutes ripping the shit out of this trainwreck, while the runner destroys the game)
  • Super Ghouls 'N Ghosts (AKA Super Scythes and Crossbows)
  • Octodad (Octodad is already stupid as hell. Adding speedrunning into the mix makes for a great time)
  • Duke Nukem ( Trihex has a story to tell you about Bonesaw's mother. WR HYPE)
  • ZZT (Cosmo what the fuck is this- oh speedrun is over WR HYPE)
  • Bubble Bobble ( The strangest love/hate co-op relationship I've ever seen. Awkward and funny!)
  • Half Life 2 ( Check out those sick frame skip strats)

The majority of the short runs are about a half an hour. I missed a few runs like SM64 120 star run, Cosmo's OoT and some of the other popular ones but almost all of runs that I watched were really well done. Congratulations to all of the runners for doing an amazing job over the week, as well as everybody working behind the scenes. AGDQ 2015 HYPE!

Edit: What's the easiest way to hide the wall of text for each category that I've made? I tried using the spoiler block but it just attached a "click to show" tag to each of my bulletpoints ;_;

The one and only I saw live was the Half Life 2 run, and it was marvelous to watch due to the great commentary. Also fascinating to watch pixel perfect backwards high speed jumping, launching and landing. No idea how people find out this stuff.

Make sure you open that spoiler tag below the video before watching "Gerstman Loves Yoshi" and don't full screen the video. The .gif only adds to the experience.

Haha! The Morrowind one was great. At 2 minutes he is still at the store in Seyda Neen. 5:35 and he has beaten the game...
I know what I am going to do the two hours I got before I need to sleep. And the coming days for that matter.

The Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts run was hilarious, and the Banjo-Tooie run wasn't half bad either.

While I love GDQ's single player videos displaying a mastery of exploits, pixels, frames, and timing, my favorites are by far the races. It has all the wonder of a speed run with an extra layer of tension thrown in. Of course, if one of the runners misses a major glitch, that tension immediately dissipates, but most I've seen have been great. The Super Metroid 4-player race from AGDQ with full commentary was amazing, and I managed to catch yesterday's Megaman X/X2 races which were also really good. The Zelda OoT race started good but a crucial mistake ruined it, but it happens sometimes.

The Morrowind one was ridiculous. Guy was basically just flying around and glitching through entire levels. I don't understand how people even go about trying to find these glitches let alone piecing them together to allow them to beat games quickly. Level of dedication I personally do not have.

Metal Wolf Chaos, because... whatever! Probably the most American game ever made that isn't from America. Thanks FromSoftware! What's especially great to top off this awesome run is some of the bonus stuff after beating the game. I'm so glad they made the donation incentive to keep all the cutscenes in. Easily the highlight of the marathon.

Anything with PJ DiCesare from Battletoads and Double Dragon to Super Scythes and Crossbows Ghouls n' Ghosts. No such thing as a normal run when he's involved, haha.

I never played the game or had much interest in it, but the Billy Hatcher and the Giant Egg run was really cool to watch, especially with some of the skips the runner pulls off.

And while I really don't like Yoshi's Story, I've played enough of it that it was a pretty tense run. I don't know if it was because the runner was really nervous, or the fact that going for all Melons can be really tricky. But I found it a good time all the same.

Thanks for the thread, OP! And to everyone else: Keep the suggestions coming.

I didn't get to see much of SGDQ this year (donated $100 for "Gerstman" though), so I've got some catching up to do!

@truthtellah: the link to the Clash at Demonhead link is broken, I think there is one too many "/b"s in there

EDIT: also thank you very much for compiling this list

Thanks for pointing that out. An extra /b was an error on another link, as well. I believe I got it fixed. :)

@truthtellah Just had a goofy thought, you should mention the shirtlessness during most of the Bubble Bobble run. Shirtless% or something.

@mooseymcman: Done.

@darkstalker Thanks for the recommendations. Could you perhaps elaborate on what you liked in those runs? :)

Super Star Wars: ROTJ was insanely fun due to an amazing runner, Stiker. 4**** at least.
ALTTP is also highly recommended.

@truthtellah: mario 3, metroid and super star wars where runs were you could tell the runner and couch were just haivng fun. lots of joke and good atmosphere. the super star wars run has a song about speed running during it.

the mario 2 and doom 64 runs are great examples of the amazing skill speed runs have.

all the runs also explain any glitches pretty well

Also recommending the ALttP run. The Save/Kill the Animals war heats up for maximum hilarity.

I forgot to mention - Everyone must check out the Goosebumps: Attack of the Mutant run. I can't really vouch for the skill of the run itself...but just watch it because that game is...special...

I'll just recap my highlights from before. The races should probably be watched. Everyone I've seen has been good. DKC2, Mario World, SOTN, Dishonored, Monkey Ball, all fantastic. The best of the bunch was Mario Sunshine. That's the one run you can't not watch.

The big long first timers are good watches. Banjo-Tooie, Skyward Sword (Boss Rush appeared at a GDQ before but not the full game) and Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door are all good runs that are worth watching. Banjo-Tooie I think is great because it's a long game but not an RPG or a Zelda, which is rare for a long game. It has a lot of interesting routing as a result. Paper Mario of course is a must watch, especially if you love beef. It has beef in spades.

Prime 2 was a solid run. Real great time for a marathon, no mistakes or anything. Just a solid watch from start to finish. The Link Between Worlds run was a bit rocky at times but it was interesting all the same. 4 Swords Adventures was a neat run, Psychonauts is a lot faster than it was the last time it was at a GDQ due to one fairly innocuous skip. Pikmin was worth watching.
