Hopefully some developers hate sports games. I'd love to see what they come up with.
Hopefully some developers hate sports games. I'd love to see what they come up with.

There are plenty of game jams happening on a regular basis, but how many are called Fuck This Jam?

The premise of Fuck This Jam is pretty interesting, with creators being asked to create a game within a genre they otherwise detest.

“Through utter ignorance for conventions and hate for the established rules of a genre, beautiful things will happen,” reads the description on the official site.

Fuck This Jam comes from the minds of Vlambeer's Rami Ismail (Super Crate Box) and Fernando Ramallo (Paranormical), and was conceived during a late-night conversation at this year’s Fantastic Arcade. Beers were probably involved.

As someone who helped organize a game jam earlier this year, I’ve found myself increasingly curious about them, especially as I mull over what we could do if another Molyjam happens next year. This one sounds fascinating.

Fuck This Jam kicks off on November 9, and unlike other jams, lasts more than 48 hours. It ends on November 17.

Wasn't this basically how Chris Avellone wrote KOTOR 2? I could have sworn he said something in an interview about how he hated the conventions of Star Wars, and basically wrote the story to subvert all of them. Seems like a really cool idea, I'd love to take part in one of these, but I've got a feeling that the only skill I could offer (project management would be about the least useful thing in that sort of setting.

Oh man another PAX East memory. I remember talking for a good 15 mins with Rami Ismail during the first day. I even helped him setup an iCade for him to show off Super Crate Box. Awesome dude and awesome game for any platform it is on.

Love this idea. It's a perfect launching point for creativity, and will hopefully allow developers to take a genre that is loved by only a specific group and make it accessible to other types of gamers. We'll see...

If Kojima created the games he does because he hates certain other genres, then challenged himself to create something in said genre, i bet it would be interesting.
There's not enough what if scenarios in the game industry sometimes, one game that springs to mind is 007 Blood Stone developed by Bizarre Creations, makers of racing games and i actually really liked it. I also heard that Sonic RPG made by Bioware on the DS was pretty good.

This sounds awesome. Some of the best genre work can come from someone who just has no experience in that genre, simply because they have no idea of the established rules and norms that other products in the genre typically abide by. Hoping for some really unique stuff out of this.

It has to do with the staff's rules from the very beginning. We punish users who make forum topics with swear words in the title. Patrick simply doesn't want to feel the wrath of the mods.

Anyways, I'm really excited to see what comes of this. I love games jams, and always find my self playing dozens of titles that come from them. I imagine this will be among the most unique jams yet.

If only 95% of indie developers would make something other than "a 2D platformer with a quirky art style and one interesting (but ultimately gimmicky) game mechanic," I would love this idea.

There we go.

I like the idea of a game jam where indie developers make crazy stuff, and this one in particular (in the hopes that we'll see real innovation here in genres that desperately need it), but I wish it didn't take a game jam to get indie developers to do this kind of stuff.

@patrick: I guess my gut reaction was just "That is a weird idea". But thinking a little bit more about the possibilities something like this could bring are intriguing. Seems like a good way to throw out deeply held genre designs for fresher more interesting things. Who cares about what they hate?

C'mon, you know that doesn't work. Swear words in print should be permitted by now.

Not even joking, extending the time period for this was a good idea. You probably need more time to make a shitty game than a mildly good one.

I'd love to participate in one of these someday.

The genre I seem to actively stay away from the most are simulation driving games. So I suppose if I were to attempt to make a simulation driving game, I'd shoot for a downhill cart racing game that's got real world physics simulation and a build it yourself Kerbal Space Program/Banjo Nuts & Bolts cart constructor. It'd have to be pretty toned down in the simulation dept since these are typically two day affairs but still, limiting it to just a straight up downhill race with no engines and basic parts, might be doable =P

I hope it doesn't devolve into a contest between who can lampoon mainstream tropes the most/hardest. Could be a neat exercise though, always good to focus on blind spots or weaknesses.

Haha, the world's greatest (and only) pinewood derby sim!

I like this idea. I'm not sure what I would make if I was a part of it, though. Maybe I'd try to make an Ultimate frisbee game, since I generally don't care for sports games.

@Scrawnto: Sports is a damn close second to sim racing. I don't hate them and I used to play some Madden with friends but only because they were into football. I'm generally not interested in watching sports (tho actually playing sports is enjoyable) so I tend to be lost in a sea of names and stats whenever I attempt to play one. If that Ultimate frisbee game were anything like that Neo Geo frisbee game windjammers, I'm in.

Oh, when I was really young, there used to be a bunch of Japanese games based on nation ball that I enjoyed. Wouldn't mind someone coming up with a new one of those neither.

I am very interested in this type of event. I can see developers just having a field day and doing their best to screw up the norm of a genre and churning out something amazing. I'll be keeping my eye on this.
