Why is it that every year, we have the soldiers of the console wars sling mud and abuses at each other in every forum on every website around the world? What causes this fervor of fanaticism for something that is as crazy as loving the game system that your favorite games come from?

I bet that in the past fans, who were by then young boys, said similar things when it was the Atari vs the world before 1984. Trivial things that are probably said too today. Once Nintendo takes over, it became Nintendo vs non-video game players. I once remember back in the 1st grade, when a kid asked me, "Why do you play Nintendo, it's so stupid! It's boring and I hate it and your dumb!"

Those are the exact words of a 6 year old. So even if you didn't play the games back then, you could still insult someone.

It seems like it escalated by the time the Playstation came in. Never mind the Genesis and the SNES, which is the real start of the console wars, because back then, it was not as vicious as it was now. Back then, it was more of a polite jabbing, I guess because the fans who grew up with Nintendo as the sole console they just ignored the emerging Sega contingent. But the Playstation was the real killer.

From 1996-2001, all I hear is "Playstation is awesome" or "Playstation rocks." And coming from a primarily Nintendo fan, it was hurtful to hear people badmouth my system, usually just to support what the held dear, or to give credence to the only console they ever played. In retrospect, it was probably kind of stupid to care, but as a boy-teenager it was common ground to make fun of the different system, especially when you were in support of another.

And then the media came into it. Thanks to the internet, forums became battlegrounds that were not for the feint of heart. Words like "stupid" were replaced with "fu*king sucks" and "it's a silly game" became "sh*tty game". The vernacular changed too. We had people using crazy abbreviations and a new internet language was born! Words like "becauz", "ROFL" ,"Roxxors", "haxor!", and even "cum on" became staples in the wars. Fresh ways to insult people got you brownie points, and smart comments backed up by evidence made you a general, one not to mess with in the forums.

The fanboyism just became another aspect of playing games. You will always have someone who doesn't agree with your taste in games and the insults will fly inevitably. The problem is, and many forums have caught on by now, is that most of these insults are the shallow, stupid ramblings of pre-teens who think they are being cool by copying the rants of the more sophisticated fanboys.

Some fanboys are also just crazier. at E3, the TGS, PAX, and other gaming expos, we have crazy dress-ups,  poor character acting, and sometimes they take it too seriously. We also get the sweaty nerds who try to point out ever single error that a game and system may have, annoying the common-folk at times with their superior knowledge and capacity to verbally spew that unwanted knowledge everywhere. These guys take fanboyism to a level that is somewhat unprecedented. It's ok to wear a Zelda t-shirt, or support Nintendo, but to dress up as Link and verbally attack anyone who doesn't agree that Ocarina of Time is the greatest game ever, well,  that's another story.

The console wars also heat up every time a new system comes in. And even before the system comes out, the fans think that the system walks on water and can do no wrong. Not true. Granted some systems are better than others, but that is based more on the tech specs and the calibur of games or control that comes with it. Which is what being a fanboy is. You become well versed in a subject so much, that you can have debates in a sophisticated matter that makes the debates more fun to engage in. It is one thing to say something sucks, but what smart fanboys do is prove their point. "The controls are not responsive because of this.."

This new level of fanboyism is actually emerging in today's console wars. Fans of the 360, Wii and PS3 are not just saying the other systems "suck" but they have evidence to prove it. This is what being a fan is in the end, proving your point, and your dominance, over the opposition. Football has great rivalry's, in the video game world, it's between Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft. And we are all guilty of this as well. Not one of us can say we prefer one system over another for specific reasons. That makes us a fan. True, we can like the opposition, but we still slant towards another camp in the end.

So fanboys are something that will never go away, as long as the console wars continue to soldier troops in the battlefields. We have seen how good, how bad, and how ugly, these troops conduct themselves. It is a part of being a gamer to take the criticisms, in whatever form they may be. In the end though, when the next generation of gaming machines, and fanboys ushers in over the old generation, you are never left in the dust. Your battlefield just changes with the times.

I am the equivalent of a UN Blue Beret. I have all the consoles and a nice pc rig. I therefore take no part in this conflict and only here to enforce the peace and help the defenceless.

" So fanboys are something that will never go away"

This fact makes me cry inside. I don't really understand platform-based fanboyism. It seems like a meaningless obsession coupled with even more meaningless competitiveness in the gamer circles. I get why people can obsess over things, and I also understand brand loyalty (though there is a point where one has to let go, if the brand starts to let you down [perfect example was my lacoste obsession, but the quality of their product is going down, and I'm torn to buy products from rival companies)], but what I don't understand is why people bother arguing which one is the best, they all know they're biased to hell  based on brand loyalty, and it's very rare to see people actually objectively compare platforms.

Personally I have no preference. I own and enjoy all three of my consoles, usually for different reasons. I tend to use my xbox for my standard issue hardcore gaming needs, mainly because if there's a choice between similar 360 and PS3 versions, I'd rather add to my acheivements. My PS3, I use for exclusives, like Little Big Planet, and MGS4, but the main reason I got it was because it was the same price as other blu-ray players out there, but could play games, and store movies on the HDD. My Wii I tend to use for more casual stuff, as it's pretty geared toward it, plus any non-gamer girls who come over tend to prefer the wii, or rock band usually.

But when people argue PS3 and 360, I just get pissed. They're pretty much the same deal, different controllers. Most games in this generation are multi-platform, exclusives aren't as common as they used to be. Wii always gets dumbed down versions of these big games, and that annoys me. I'd rather see original stuff for it. But then people who compare 360 and the PS3 with the Wii are being stupid about it because the Wii serves totally different purposes than those two, and it serves different markets. That's like comparing a family restaurant to a bar. They both serve food, but they serve it to different people, and under different conditions. Apples and oranges, folks.

So that's why either way you slice it, platform fanboyism is pretty much absolute this generation. Pretty please stop! =)

Good blog post, by the way.

@ demonbear:

Hell yeah! I'm one good rig short of this combo, but my laptop does the trick at running most games.

But the AN's waaay better than the UN. They'll take down the shadaloo of fanboyism.

Why defend? Why not be all like "Wow my xbox is cool, but I also enjoy going to Timmy's and playing some PS3, and then playing Wii at grandpa's" or something?

Why not embrace it all?

Games are fun! Just enjoy 'em whatever you're playing.

Thats the point, basically. Just because you experienced one console doesn't mean there is something else out there you could experience.  A lot of the younger gamers today don't get that, while the old guard, my generation, do.

I have given up on understanding Fanboyism. It doesn't make any sense to me and I don't know why others have to trash what someone else likes. At worst it's hurtful and at best just really annoying. I try to stick to communities that have low levels of fan boys. Giantbomb is very good for that and so is NeoGaf.

Yeah GiantBomb is pretty good for chill gamers. Some bad apples, but whatever, overall, we pretty much rock. Hooray for understanding.

The only fanboyism I really suppose I would understand is like multiple games in a given genre, but only if they're similar. Don't like the Half-Life/Halo argument, those games are too far apart to even bother arguing properly.

And Keyser is a winner.

They extend themselves personally to the things they own. Once someone points out a fault in the single console they own, that person has attack them personally!

I have a similar problem with the "alignment" in my Giant Bomb profile. When I setup my account, I had no idea this was an explicit declaration of fanboyism. I have a PS3, 360, and a PC, but I tend to prefer the experience I have on the 360 hence my 360 alignment here. However, I usually choose which platform to buy multiplatform games on a case-by-case basis. I chose to buy Borderlands on my 360 because I didn't know of any vast discrepancies between that and the PS3 version (PC was out. Need single-console co-op.) leaving the 360 as my default choice. Conversely, I picked up Batman: Arkham Asylum on the PS3 to get the behind-the-scenes videos that are PS3 exclusive. When I posted on the forums to ask about the differences in the platforms for Batman, the outcry was, "It's obvious that you've already chosen. Your name is printed in green." I had no idea when I made that alignment choice that I was declaring my undying love and devotion to MS. In spite of the fact that I prefer it, I still find fault in it.

I made my own neutral just to the point out that it doesn't matter. I like Nintendo more than some companies, but I would still be critical to Nintendo in the end anyway, like true fans are. Blind devotion is nothing but noise.

I like all the consoles, and I've played all the consoles. All of them seem like they have good sides and bad sides, but in the end the Wii is in my room. I like what it has to offer, and I've got tons of fun out of it. I don't hate what Sony or Microsoft has to offer, I just think I'd be getting less out of them.

You could say I'm a Nintendo fanboy, seeing as I get kinda mad when people spout things like "Wii is a joke" or "Wii isn't a real console", but that's their opinion I guess. But me personally, I enjoy all of them for what they have to offer.

If I did that, I'd spend all my time on webforums, endlessly defending every goddamn console, all the time! I wouldn't have a life!

Oh wait.. that sounds like console fanboys, so I guess I'm on the money with that one.

And you picked up the PS3 version of Arkham for the videos? Whazzabout The Joker man! That's REAL exclusive content right there.

Now you make me feel bad for buying Dead or Alive 4 when I got my xbox. That's pretty much akin to playing Flaming Mammaries on my Tit-Tacular 3000. That games just makes me feel guilty for the things I witnessed.

But yeah it's very childish behavior. It's expected that the spoiled kids would pull that tactic. They're kids, whatever. What annoys me is the fully grown adult/teen nerds who argue these matters. Unsurprisingly, they're very undeveloped in terms of their maturity level. Not bashing all nerds by the way. Just annoying ones who can't let shit go.

I wish people would just relax and enjoy the flippin' games. Look at the stuff we get to play! A swordfighitng game on the wii, where you get to swordfight for reals! A wicked game where you can like steal cars, and mack hos, and shit! A game where you run around with the sole purpose of nazi killing! Games are fuckin' awesome, once again, who cares what you're playing, it's just how flabbergastingly awesome they all are nowadays that counts. I mean shiiiiit, just appreciate you're not playing The Odyssey or something.

@EdIsCool:  I still play Flaming Mammaries.  it's jiggle-tastic.

I think most fanboyism arises from personalizing your identity with that of a brand.  If you only had one console growing up then you'll likely become a fanboy for that one system.  If you've had different consoles growing up, fanboyism isn't as ingrained.  It's just like Coke/Pepsi, Mac/PC or Yankees/Red Sox.  Whatever you grew up enjoying effects which way your alliance leans.  I think older gamers who've owned or now own multiple systems don't subscribe to the whole "mine's better than yours" philosophy.

Yeah I started out with Nintendo totally by chance (my parents randomly got me a 64 for xmas, I had no clue what it, or consoles were at the time. Video games for me were something that existed only on PCs), and I initally supported them pretty hardcore, but I wasn't stupid about it, I got hyped for the gamecube, realised it was dissapointing halfway through the generation and swapped it for an xbox. Then I was a fan of xbox, so I got 360 first out of this generation. Sony has always been fairly reliable, so I got 'em 2nd, and I was weary of the Wii at first (and kinda still am waiting for some REAL killer apps), so I got it last, and only when I had a big surplus of money to waste.

And ever since Intel chips came out on macs, the Mac/PC debate has become moot seeing as Macs now have the PC x86 architechture. Seriously, pretty much any computer can run Mac or Windows, so I reallly don'T see that argument anymore. I switched over to mac after they got the intel chips and I've been satysfied with 'em so far, this one's my 2nd intel mac that I'm on now, and I'm still pretty happy. And it also runs games very competently on the windows side of things, so I can keep that facet too.

Seriously, look at all this tech. It's made fanboyism obsolete.

From personal experience, the answer is a desire to be right, combined with a desire for others to be wrong. Also, usually a feeling that the company in question not only has their interests in mind, but the interests of all games in mind; to question their will is to question how they run video games.

That's a very interesting observation you've made there and I think you're on to something.  Even among the consoles, as we move closer to photo-realism, the arguments used to promote one console over another have diminished.  In many cases the differences between a third-party game on the 360 and the PS3 are so minuscule only a side by side, frame by frame comparison will show any contrast.  We've reached a point where it is just about the exclusives among those two systems.  As franchises thought to be associated with a specific console go multiplatform, our choices are made from just a handful of titles.  The arguments for or against a beloved gaming system become thinner each year.

Personally I think trolls and fanboys have a lot of overlap and I wish they'd destroy each other in an explosion of blubber and milk teeth.

The fanboy is fueled purely by his ignorance and his craving for validation. They are usually neglected types who will fixate upon the first thing that speaks to them specifically. They are the stalkers, the creepy raper guys who instead of moving on will suck the original source dry, try to get inside it, become part of it, pour all their love into it.

Most console fanboys are fanboys by necessity: their mum only bought them a Wii after much effort whining and pestering, and now they don't like it when the trolls say it sucks. Technology moves on, people grow up, so most of the fanboys around during the N64 era aren't still steaming up their glasses over GoldenEye. They're adults now who find that masturbating over Neon Genesis Evangelion doesn't go down well at parties. The few people who do carry their fanboyism into adulthood are to be treated with care as they are generally one step away from buying guns.

"Most console fanboys are fanboys by necessity: their mum only bought them a Wii after much effort whining and pestering, and now they don't like it when the trolls say it sucks. "

This is pretty much true, people with a large gaming budget technically have no excuse for being a fanboy. It's mostly all the kids who just wanna justify what they're playing. Honestly it really doesn't matter. I just got really really lucky somehow and ended up with all three. But I am pretty biased in the end, when I look at my games. I have 70+ Xbox games, 3 PS3 games and 5 Wii games. To be fair, my PS3 probably gets more use, since it's my primary media device, I play all my avi movies, blu-rays and photos on it. The wii, I just haven't owned long, and I'm still waiting on the REALLY innovative stuff. PS3 games though, I do need a few essentials, like LBP, Warhawk, and inFAMOUS. And I'm just plain excited for the God of War 1 & 2 pack and the 3rd one.

Exactly, it really kinda all boils down to the minor stuff. Which controller you prefer, which non-gaming related features a console will have. I feel like the PS3 is the best overall console, in terms of just the sheer amount of features, and the blu-ray player is such a sweet deal. The 360 has my favorite controller though, plus achievements, and I like the online features better. So I'd say the 360 is better for games related features, but the PS3 just has more stuff to do outside of games, and I prefer how it's all presented.

I'm curious about the video game generations to come. Will third party exclusives pretty much cease to exist? We're pretty close as it is. Also I feel like any format war is gonna die too, thanks to everything being downloadable nowadays. My ultimate wish would be for these game console manufacturers to collaborate on the most bitchin' game machine evar.

That is a truly incredible anthem. Jazzy, yet subtly epic.
