Favorite Directional Pad?

It's a bit soon to say, but.. I think I have to give my vote to the one on the Vita.

Love that dang D-Pad, it just feels.. right.

How about everyone else? Which console controller or handheld has your favorite directional pad?

SNES is the only correct answer.

The classic Nintendo d-pad that they've patented is the greatest.

Basically this. I still think it's possible to improve upon, but it's so much better than anything else out there that there's not much reason to.

Dat SNES. It's too bad nintendo have a patent or some shit on the D-pad, so that nobody will ever be allowed to have a good D-pad ever again.

Listen...I just played 2 SNES games in a row, one quite long. I don't recall what it was like when those were relatively new controllers, but both the ones that I have require quite a lot of force to push down the d-pads. I found that my thumb hurt quite badly after some longer sessions, so I started experimenting with taking the rubber out of an N64. Unfortunately that didn't improve the situation much.

The original NES controller seems to have held up better in my experience, I'd lean towards that.

You people are nuts. Its the Saturn Model 2 D-pad.

That Vita Dpad is quite nice. Though it is a bit on the small side. I never played the SNES so I can't say if that had a good dpad or not but I was fond of the NES controller. I've also always liked Sony's 4 button dpad.

the playstation dpad was always pretty good

The 16 bit dpads were great, but I'll go with the Dual Shock since it let me hit Tekken moves 100% of the time.

When I'm playing RPGS on my Ps2/ ps3 I usually use that Dpad for the menus. It's pretty solid. I believe that is also how I played Viewtiful Joe 1 and 2. It also works well for PC gaming. It's how I'm playing Cave Story.

The Snes is also really good.

I'm now legitimately interested in tracking down a Saturn!

The SNES is the safe answer. But the PS3 pad is the only one that I've been to use successfully with 2D fighting games. For that alone I'm saying the PS3 d-pad.

Online

@tyxja: You can find USB versions online for somewhat cheap. I bought one when I was hooked on Super Street Fighter 4.

The Wii/DS/3DS D-Pad and the Dualshock.

#25 Posted by Laksa (220 posts) - 6 months, 11 days ago

Sega Saturn HSS-0101

This is the best Dpad. The knockoff usb pads on ebay do not feel the same,do not buy those.

#26 Posted by wafflez (501 posts) - 6 months, 11 days ago

Don't be stupid, the answer is the SNES d-pad.

#27 Posted by TobbRobb (3304 posts) - 6 months, 11 days ago

I grew up getting used to the playstation pad "well technically the megadrive one, but it's not as good". SO PLAYSTATION IS BEST.

Playstation brand D-Pad for me. It's never failed me in a fighter.

Pretty much this. It is remarkable how well the Vita one is as well. Executing combos in Mortal Kombat is as easy as it is with a DualShock.

PS2

#31 Posted by egg (894 posts) - 6 months, 11 days ago

I choose PSP-2000/3000

but the Saturn one is good too

I don't see whats so great about Vita's, it feels mushy

Wii/DS/3DS have different dpads. Only Wiimote and DS Lite is the same. DSi, DS fat, and Wii classic controller are each different.

I really like the Playstation d-pad.
