Hello, ladies and gentlemen, to the opening round of Female Character of the Generation voting! You may have noticed the format of the poll above is substantially different than it was for the male bracket. There is a reason for this.

The first round of voting on the men ends tonight (November 27th). This round of voting was divided into ten groups; three from each move on to the second round (four, in case of a third-place tie). However, the moderators have informed me that this pace is not sustainable due to the number of threads it would produce. Therefore, the initial round of voting on the women will work differently, primarily with these changes:

  1. There are only two groups. They are huge.
  2. Each user will be allowed multiple votes per group. I am invoking the honor system here; no one is allowed more than fifteen votes. I have no way to know if you are cheating or not, but just don't do it. That's a dick move.
  3. The top fifteen from each group will move on to Round 2. In the event of a a tie for fifteenth, either all tied characters will move on, or a winner-take-all elimination round of voting will be instituted (but only if there are a crazy amount of ties).
  4. After the polls open tonight, they will remain open until 9PM Pacific on Friday, November 29th, to account for the Thanksgiving holiday in the U.S. on Thursday.

Wiggle those hips! And those sweet sweet traps.

#4 Posted by DeadpanCakes (1064 posts) -

Wait, before I vote, is it fifteen for per group, or fifteen total? Just to be perfectly clear

#5 Posted by Yummylee (22504 posts) -

Alritey then:

  • Anya
  • Clementine
  • Emily Wyatt
  • Judith
  • Kinzie
  • Tali

Though I'm rooting for Tali, Clementine, and Emily the mostestestest.

Fifteen per group. I'm aiming for a total of thirty to move on to round two, just like the male category.

@theht: Characters aren't represented by one specific game appearance, that's just listing which game they were first introduced in.

This is true.

Also, I have to say that this voting format is turning out well. If I had thought of it beforehand I probably would have done the male bracket in the same fashion.

I put 10 votes in total, but I'm really rooting for -

Clem

Faith

June

Bayonetta

Someone voted for Goal? Really?

Deponia shouldn't be nominated for anything of the generation, especially not character writing.

C'mon Miku!

That is a great sprite. Is it actually used in a game?

#19 Edited by TooWalrus (13256 posts) -

I'm just going to vote for the few I think really deserve it. Which means I'm voting like, thrice.

Incoming Catherine spoilers...

I thought Erica Anderson was a dude?

#21 Edited by TheBluthCompany (421 posts) -

Could I vote for Glados like, 10 times?

#22 Posted by Hailinel (25205 posts) -

I thought Erica Anderson was a dude?

Erica considers herself female, so I'm going with it. If Poison were somehow eligible for this, she'd be in the female bracket, too.

Erica is 100% female. I in fact voted for her, as such a positive trans depiction is rare, in any medium.

#25 Edited by MEATBALL (3468 posts) -

I do hope Erica makes it through, she really was an awesome character.

#26 Posted by crithon (3441 posts) -

well, I made my choice

#27 Posted by LackingSaint (1853 posts) -

I have to admit, I do feel like people are mostly just voting for Clementine because they like The Walking Dead. She's pretty good, but doing this well? I dunno.

#28 Posted by Humanity (10037 posts) -

What are you people smoking, Clementine? As the best female character of the generation? She had a decent voice actress and the ending was pretty good but man there are so many better and stronger female characters than a ragdoll you drag around and comfort once in a while.

#29 Edited by TobbRobb (4840 posts) -

Couldn't even find 15 I wanted to vote for, that makes me a little sad.

Also lol, I knew who would lead but please people. Please.

#30 Posted by DonChipotle (2839 posts) -

I'm pulling for Saya.

I'll be the only one probably but hey...someone has to go for the underdog.

#31 Posted by TobbRobb (4840 posts) -

@donchipotle: Dun worry, including me, at least two more people picked her too. XD

This poll made me realize how little video-gaming I must do. Or at the very least, I don't must rarely pay attention to it's characters...

@humanity: Who do you consider to be superior to Clementine? Providing nothing to back up your claims is a surefire way to be ignored by others. Maybe GladOS? She is a funny computer, that's got to count for something. If you don't like GladOS, then vote for EDI! She's not funny, but she is a robot. Tali or Emily Wyatt would be sensible choices, I suppose.

In any case, vote smart. Vote Rosangela Blackwell.

#34 Edited by Humanity (10037 posts) -

@noblenerf: I voted Bayonetta, as the only sensible choice.

#35 Posted by Brodehouse (10125 posts) -

Voted for some Mass Effect characters, for the Amazon since that's my character in Dragon's Crown, for *Hyun-Ae, Faith, Combat Girl was my character in SMNC, Juliet because she's fun, Bayonetta because duh.

My top character is Rose of Sharon Cassidy though. That chick was great. In these times of tumblr feminism, it's great to have a woman who wants nothing more in life than to make that bitch Gloria Van Graff eat her own hair.

#36 Posted by JackSukeru (5963 posts) -

These character polls have made me realize 2 things:

  1. I haven't really played a lot of the most story focused games this generation.
  2. There aren't a lot of characters, at least among the games I've played, that I genuinely like as characters.

u should have added another option *none of the above*

These were the characters that were nominated. Well, some of them, anyway. The rest are in the other thread. If you don't feel that any of them are worth voting for, you always have the option to abstain.

#39 Posted by Video_Game_King (36272 posts) -

@donchipotle:

If it makes you feel better, I probably would've voted for her if I'd played Saya no Uta.

Oh dammit, I didn't notice that River from To The Moon was in this poll and I would've voted for her had I noticed.

Sorry @hailinel, we'll have to start the whole poll over again.

Yet video games are misogynist, guys.

I can't believe Bayonetta isn't winning this hands down. She was the single most badass female playable character of this entire generation. Smart and in control, always doing things her own way, never a lackey to anyone. Tali was a sniveling coward in the first Mass Effect, then she completely ditches you in ME2 until the DLC where she uses you to better herself, then in ME3 she's just there out of nowhere because space romance and uncomfortable fanfiction.

#48 Posted by biggiedubs (504 posts) -

I always liked Shannon Marquez from Kentucky Route Zero, but alas.

Erica / Juri for me, with Erica being my number one pick. She's the best thing about Catherine by my reckoning.

#49 Edited by NMC2008 (1237 posts) -

Clementine is winning because of the daughter complex, everyone wants to protect a little girl as if they were their daughters(that's that they are the prominent child gender in games these days, which is why I was super surprised that A Tale of Two Brothers was about 2 young boys) and we see that in the praise she got at the time the game released and now in this poll. If Clem were just another woman she wouldn't get a second look. I have no idea what makes Clem a good character to be honest, when I played the game I really didn't see what was so special about her. *shrugs*

This is my opinion of course, my fairly strong opinion.

Also, the Erica votes, I really hope she isn't being voted for just for her sexual orientation, I have only played Catherine up to level 8 and so far I didn't see anything special, but if ya'll do then great, but again, I hope it's not only for trans rep in gaming. Actually, I don't really care why you did it. *shruggity shrug shrugs*
