Actually they are in the same universe, just not the same planet. They share the same theme, both games revolve around the crystals and the gods that left them there to rule over the planets. FFXIII Agito is also in the same universe, they're called the "Fabula Nova Crystallis" Trilogy. But expect pretty much everything else to be different.

Are you sure they take place on different planets? I'm pretty sure I remember a quote from Square saying that they take place on the same planet, but in vastly different time periods. I'll see if I can find the quote.
EDIT: The best I could find was wikipedia (I know, not a briliant source, but it was the best I could find) saying "According to Square Enix, they all take place in the same world but in different time periods and there is no cooperation between the teams of the various titles"
