Recently gaming soundtracks have been getting a lot of listening time. They are absolutely ideal while revising / working, brilliant semi-background music. So far;

- Bastion

- Fez

- Cave story

- Super Meat Boy

- Sword and Sworcery

Anyone else any they listen to and want to recommend to me and others?

Nier has the best game soundtrack ever made, so much so that they've released 4 soundtracks for it (OG album, remix album, piano album, and remix album from japanese artists)

My Favourite is Final Fantasy X but I also think Final Fantasy XIII has a stunning one too coming clost second to it in the Final Fantasy franchise.

I love the music of the Zelda franchise (with Ocarina of Time's sountrack probably adding the most to the gameplay experience while any soundtrack from Wind Waker onwards could much more easily be held up as masterpieces in their own right).

The Kingdom Hearts series as some of the most well thought out soundtracks out there (especially since they weave melodies of previous songs in with newer ones to link story points with the musical themes).

Okami has a truly magnificent soundtrack - most people obviously notice the visible art style immediately and comment on that but honestly the use of music really transcends a nice idea for a setting into a true tangible and engrossing world.

And I would also mention Assassin's Creed, Mass Effect and Portal for using their soundtrack to really help their universes feel massive and make the actions of the player feel significant.

Chrono Trigger!

EDIT: Also, the Halo soundtrack. Regardless of whether you like the games or not, they've got pretty good soundtracks.

Journey, Portal 2, Uncharted 3, and I recently found a site with all of the music from all of the Ratchet and Clank games so I've been jamming out to that A LOT.

The more I hear about Nier, the more I feel I've missed out by not playing it. Might have to do something about that one of these days.

As for my picks:

Ace Combat Zero - Totally solid soundtrack throughout, but the final boss track, 'Zero' is the best final boss music out there.

Final Fantasy Tactics - I think you could make a really good case for calling this the best game soundtrack ever made. Even the end credits theme kicks ass, but 'Trisection' has always been my favorite track.

Ys: Oath in Felghana - Sound Team JDK's masterpiece. The Ys games always had amazing soundtracks, but Oath in Felghana really took those old SNES tracks and did some amazing stuff with them. If I had to choose, 'Frozen Time' is probably my favorite song on the soundtrack, but 'Searing Struggle' and 'The Strongest Foe' are so good it would be criminal not to mention them.

I'll second Donkey Kong Country 2, and Persona 4. But also Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World: The Game. Anamanaguchi did the soundtrack, and it's one of the best things I've heard in a long time.

A few others would be: Tales of Symphonia. Majora's Mask. Final Fantasy 4/7. Super Mario Sunshine, but only because that's one of the few redeeming qualities of that game. And Street Fighter II.

That sounds an awful lot like piracy.

Journey has the best soundtrack of the year so far.

I'll be cuh-ray-zay and throw Spec Ops: the Line into the hat for "best soundtrack." Of course, if you don't like classic rock or rock and roll in general, you'll probably dislike it.

Still, someone made a shoot-out with Martha Reeves' "Nowhere to Run" as the backing track. That's fucking awesome.

Previous posts have been dead-on with Bastion and Journey. I'm also really into the Skyrim soundtrack. I wake up every morning to the sounds of "Dragonborn". Gets me ready to go!

The Mirror's Edge soundtrack is really good. The remix album of the theme song is alright too.

Shank has an alright soundtrack that is free (or was, I can't remember).

I really like Jeremy Soule’s work, especially in Icewind Dale and Guild Wars.
