Uncharted 2 for sure and I think Oblivion lived up to the hype too as it far exceeded my expectations.

@Gizmo:
You're awesome, do you want to know why?  That's the first game that came to my head.  I had only played about halfway through Halo 2 when I got Halo 3.  I loved Halo 3.  I played that multiplayer for about 6 months with my brother.  It did everything I wanted.  The campaign was fun.  The only other game I've played to completion at least twice is Mass Effect 2.

Other than that, Mass Efect (1 and 2), GTA 4, Red Dead Redemption, Call of Duty 4: MW, Fable 2, and Psychonauts.

You mean like hype overall? Or just your personal feelings for it.

Because I think pretty much every game fails to live up to the hype if it is somewhat popular.

Every game lives up to it's hype.
It's not the game's fault that you're a jackass.

You're correct sir. About Halo 3's excellence, not being a douchebag. ;)

Resident Evil 4. I knew nothing about the game until I read an article about it and it was deff a worthy contender for GOTY that year. I love that game.

Metal Gear Solid 2.

Hype was huge for the game......and it was my favorite MGS game. Despite 95% of people despising Raiden.

Uncharted 2. Half-Life 2, while I didn't play it upon release, would be a good option for many who were expecting it to deliver in 2004.

World of Warcraft and the first Mass Effect. The second ME was a terrible disappointment.

Mass Effect 2.  I had high expectations and they were all met.  Sure the minerals mini-game sucked but there's always something.  Overall, it fixed all the grievances I had with the first game.  It's an amazing adventure throughout.

Dragon Age: Origins exceeded my expectations.  Leading up to it's release I heard many misgivings and concerns from the games press about the game, so I was cautious.  I waited around until it was on sale from Steam and then I bought it and what a pleasant surprise.  It really is a magnificent game.

Uncharted 2: Among Thieves disappointed me a bit.  I liked it certainly and believe it to be among the best games of 2009, however I had loved the first so much that when the sequel didn't provide that same fresh "wow" experience, I felt a little let down.
