So there are a bunch of great games released every year but only certain ones will classics and will bring nostalgia for you in the future. What recent games (Starting from the PS2, Xbox and Gamecube era) do you think will be considered classics for you? It's a hard question but give it a go!
Games that will be classics for you?
MGS series, the Assassin's Creed games, LA Noire, Bioware games, Jak and Daxter series, Ratchet series, InFamous series, Uncharted series, God of War series, Persona 3 & 4, Sly 1, Spider-man 2, Super Mario Sunshine, Sonic Adventure 2 Battle, Batman Arkham Asylum. There may be more.
From that recently I would have to say Devil May Cry 3, Dead Rising, Timesplitters 3, Super Smash Brothers Melee, Super Mario Galaxy, Fire Emblem, Final Fantasy VIIII and probably more. Hard to pick off the top of your head.
Portal, Portal 2, Red Faction: Guerrilla, Borderlands, Burnout Paradise, Resident Evil 4, Mario Kart: Double Dash, Super Smash Bros. Melee, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker, Super Mario Sunshine (I liked it, sue me), Mass Effect, Mass Effect 2, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, Half-Life 2, Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved, Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow (if we're including handheld games), Mario Kart DS, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, Hotel Dusk: Room 215, Professor Layton and the Curious Village, The World Ends With You, Super Mario Galaxy, and many more, most likely.
I can't think right now for some reason so I can only say Max Payne 1&2, the Splinter Cell games, Hitman games, The Witcher 1&2, Resident Evil games, Wind Waker, Viewtiful Joe. I know there are more.
Xbox- Deathrow, the Splinter Cell series, Silent Hill 2 and 4, Manhunt, Street Fighter: Anniversary Collection (really only for Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike), Run Like Hell, and Mortal Kombat: Armageddon.
PS2- The only one I can think of since I only owned a PS2 for a few months was Twisted Metal: Black.
I'll let ya know about the 360 in about 10 years.
A classic is a game that rises above all else in your mind. Only 2 from the last gen do that for me. RDR and Mass Effect 2. CoD 4 & Fallout 3 are close but just don't make the cut.
Portal
That is all.
Well, not really, but it's the first one that came to my mind...
I can't believe no one has said Duke Nukem Forever, that is like the classic.
Twisted Metal Black, Metal Gear Solid 3, Silent Hill 1, 2, and 3, Amnesia, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Shadow of Chernobyl, Painkiller, Mirror's Edge, Flower, Pixeljunk Shooter.
Persona 3
Red Dead Redemption
Resident Evil 4
Dragon Age: Origins
Metal Gear Solid 3
GTA: Vice City
Just to name a few.
Hmm, I started listing things but it just turned into my "Favorites" list with a few sequels added to it. I guess anything recent off my list is the answer in that regard.
DMC3 was the first game I thought of.
Call of Duty 4
MGS3
Mass Effect
Dragon Age: Origins
KoTOR
Demon's Souls
Red Dead Redemption
Wind Waker
Mortal Kombat (9)
Battlefield 2
Bad Company 2
Edit: Don't know how I forgot Darksiders.
Metroid Prime.
Resident Evil Four.
Personally? A shitload of Gamecube games, Darksider, Heavy Rain... in fact, a number of recently released games.
Good time to be a gamer.
cod 4, mass effect1+2, oblivion, gta san andreas, star wars battlefront , wwe smackdown vs raw , twighlight princess
Super Smash Bros Melee, the whole Metal Gear series, Timesplitters 2, XIII, 007: Nightfire, Burnout 3, Halo: CE and 2, Monster Hunter Portable, Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2, Final Fantasy X, Silent Hill 2, Portal/The Orange Box, Uncharted 2, Ghost Recon.
Those are a few that always give me nostalgigasms, not all are perfect or even my favourite games "ever", but all bring back 'classic' memories.
Persona 3/4, Deadly Premonition, Phoenix Wright, Twilight Princess, Super Smash Bros Brawl, Shadow Complex, Starcraft II, Borderlands,
Shenmue series,MGS series,Persona 3 and 4,ICO,Shadow Of The Collosus,Twisted Metal Black,Killer 7,No More Heroes,Mass Effect 1 and 2,Jet Grind Radio series,Sonic Adventure 1 and 2,Skies Of Arcadia,Legend Of Zelda Windwaker,Yakuza Series, theres more but these are the ones that come to mind right now,
The Halo series, specifically Halo 2. Being 18 years old right now, Halo 2 came out during middle school for me. My friends and I spent many a nights chugging mountain dew's and killing each other on Lockout. Those are memories I will hold dear.
A couple others would have to be KOTOR, Mass Effect series, Half Life 2, Portal 1 & 2, and Obilvion.
EDIT: I could keep going but I don't want to crowd things up
EDIT EDIT: Persona 3 & 4. Ok I swear those are the last ones.
At this point its really hard to pin down specific games that will be classic, as almost everything will be followed up by some kind of sequel really quick and the lines between those games get kind of rather blurry when you look back in ten or twenty years, thus it's more the franchises that will become classic then any single game in them. So I'll probably remember Assassins Creed and Mass Effect for a while and as far as singular games go, Mirror's Edge still is still pretty unique and The Void was also an experience that I won't forget anytime soon. Deadly Premonition probably also fits that role, but I haven't yet played that one.
Kingdom Hearts, God of War and Resident Evil 4.
Those 3 games are the only games I now care to play through repeatedly and I still have fun every time I do, so they're my modern classics.
I'm probably gonna miss a few but here's ones that jump out to me, including last gen and this gen: Resident Evil 4, Resident Evil remake, Twilight Princess, Devil May Cry 3, GTA Vice City and San Andreas , Okami, Shadow of the Colossus, MGS(2,3 and 4), Half Life 2, Portal, Portal 2, BioShock, Bayonetta, Mass Effect series, Vanquish, Uncharted series, Fallout 3. Oh and Call of Duty 4, my most played multiplayer game by far. Shame the series went downhill afterwards.
