@Bombs_Away: Nice list, I'm playing through Half life at the moment, really enjoying it.

#8 Posted by Bombs_Away (1010 posts) -
@copeland57: Yeah it's a great game. I only played it for the first time about a year ago. It really holds up well. Hope you enjoy it!
#9 Posted by S0ndor (2716 posts) -

Braid, many will tell you. I bought it yesterday during the sale, I've yet to try it though.

For me, it would probably be Super Mario 64 and Galaxy.

#10 Posted by Bombs_Away (1010 posts) -

Oh and Streets of Rage 2, my all time favourite. How did I forget!?

#11 Posted by Sayishere (1840 posts) -

Gears 3

#25 Posted by BeachThunder (12446 posts) -

I think this question is too general to answer. A lot of it depends on your genre preferences. So, as an example, I'm going to make a list of:

Adventure Games I think YSPBYD

  • Day of the Tentacle
  • Professor Layton 1
  • Ghost Trick
  • Portal 2
  • Grim Fandango
  • Colossal Cave Adventure
  • Myst
  • King's Quest 1
  • Secret of Monkey Island
  • Amnesia
  • Beneath a Steel Sky
  • The Longest Journey
  • Heavy Rain
#26 Posted by Fripplebubby (1028 posts) -

Duke Nukem forever, right guys? Ah hah hah, that'll be the day!

That would normally be the joke i'd use here, but sadly I cannot.
#27 Posted by copeland57 (32 posts) -

@BeachThunder: Nice list, im gonna try play heavy rain next week when i can get my hands on a PS3 for abit, that game looks awesome

My wallpaper disagrees with statement about FF IX.  I would also recommend Metal Gear Solid 1-3 and I guess 4 but it is too full of itself for me to truly love it.

BIT.TRIP BEAT

If anyone familiar with Pong gives this a go, I guarantee they will get a kick out of it. BIT.TRIP's cheap and runs on nearly any PC/Mac (Wii-ware too).

Thought I'd list something anyone could pick up.

PS: As of today steam is selling this gem for $4.99

#40 Posted by copeland57 (32 posts) -

@Abyssfull: I downloaded Shadow of the templars on my ipod touch a wee while ago when it was going for free. Still havent played it yet, but will be doing on your recommendation thanks

#41 Posted by copeland57 (32 posts) -

@hurtfulmadmax: I should have picked it up the yesterday when it was going for £1.79 or something, feel like a schmuck now. might wait and see if steam lowers the price again in this sale

Super Mario Bros., Super Mario World, Super Mario 64, Super Mario Galaxy (just to see how platforming is done well and how it evolved to 3D)
Halo 1, 2, or 3 (Shame people cant go back and experience Halo 2 online)
Half-Life 1 and 2
Doom 1 and 2
Zelda Link to the Past, Ocarina of Time, and Windwaker
Twisted Metal 2
Driver
Grand Theft Auto Vice City and GTA4
MGS 1, 2, 3, 4
TF2 (it's free and good, so why not)
League of Legends (same reason as TF2)
Resident Evil remake and RE4
Diablo 2
Mass Effect 1 and 2
Morrowind, Oblivion, and Fallout 3

Ok, I could go on and on, but I have to stop. That looks like a wide enough range of games, and I think I got most of the important ones.

#43 Posted by copeland57 (32 posts) -

@redbliss: Nice list man, definitely going to try out Mass effect 1 and 2 heard many good things about it

videos games are SO subjective that this thread is basically pointless

kudos on the cool idea, but it doesn't work with video games

To what extent do half of these have for people to play before they die? I know its a list but is it a list of games that showed you something great about gaming? or just your favorite games. TF2 is free and fun but whats special about it? LoL is fun but wouldn't Dota be the one people should play to experience first to see where LoL was originated from and what is driving a genre into gaming? Also why vice city / gta4? Wouldn't playing 1 and 2 then then having someone play 3 to show that the top down shooter was made into a 3d version? also why those specific zelda's? Wouldn't Legend of Zelda be more relevant on what started the series and what made it so great? And Halo.. wtf is with halo.. what special thing has it brought about besides... the Popularity of the Xbox? And RE remake? why not just play the original like it is without the changes. and why 4?

#47 Posted by HarlequinRiot (1098 posts) -

There's only a handful that I would say qualify as games that need to be experienced before you die (I'm not going to say completed). I think it's important to understand the titles that introduced and revolutionized the industry. With that said, I would say the list should look something like this:

1. Pacman
2. Pong
3. Super Mario Bros.
4. Legend of Zelda
5. Whatever the first/best big adventure game was
6. Doom
7. World of Warcraft
8. Ocarina of Time
9. Uncharted 2
10. Tetris
11. Half Life

I'm sure I left out a bunch of games, but what I tried to do in this (very very) quick list was jot down the most important games of before and now. Games that either introduced or perfected certain concepts. From one of the most classic multiplayer games to arguably the best example of the modern Hollywood action game. Like I said, I'm definitely missing something.
