Since we are beginning the next generation with Wii U and the current generation is showing its age, I got the urge to visit some old Gamespot videos when new consoles started coming out. I remember watching the all day quick look of Wii when it first came out but never knew if the same was done with the 360 back in the day.

I ended up watching episodes of On the Spot around the launch of the Xbox and the PS3/Wii. It's super fun to go back and see what we were exited to play all the way back in 2006. THAT'S SUCH A LONG TIME AGO.

I uploaded a "Quick Look" of Gears of War that the Giant Bomb guys did back in the Gamespot days. It's interesting to see how the quick look format began before Giant Bomb was a thing. It really is the perfect way to show off a game. Also they talk about how Brad always dies in games. I guess that's a long standing tradition.

This clip is from the November 2, 2006 episode of On The Spot. I would recommend going back and watching a few of these videos around the launch of new consoles. Exciting times.

OH MAN BRAD IS SO YOUNG AHHHHHH

#4 Posted by aquamarin (550 posts) - 6 months, 4 days ago

Wow it feels like yesterday that this came out, this looks like it's from 20 years ago.

#5 Posted by csl316 (4714 posts) - 6 months, 4 days ago

Hell yes. I demand more of these hacked together old "Quick Looks."

#6 Posted by Bucketdeth (7935 posts) - 6 months, 4 days ago

Weird to think that this was still in the same generation as we are in now.

#7 Edited by freedo (68 posts) - 6 months, 4 days ago

Holy shit.

This was the first On the Spot I watched, therefor, the first time I was introduced to the ""quality"" (have to double quote that) games coverage these guys produce. Never looked back. My favorite part of this episode (if I remember right) is when they play Alien Hominid and Jeff says, "Oh no, it's the Fuzz. Cheese it." Not sure why, but I thought that was just the funniest shit.

This is crazy. Thanks dude.

#9 Posted by Landon (3963 posts) - 6 months, 4 days ago

Ryans voice sounds really young.

#10 Posted by Wacomole (732 posts) - 6 months, 4 days ago

It was strange to hear them say the words "Gears of War" without a number immediately following it.

If you think that's weird, then you probably shouldn't watch this.

I feel like Ryan finally grew into his voice right around the end of his time at Gamespot/founding of Giant Bomb.

that was awesome! kinda bums me out that I wasn't paying more attention to gamespot back then.

@BisonHero: What's great is how modern Ryan's nervous dude parody voice sounds just like classic Ryan.
#15 Posted by Nightriff (2878 posts) - 6 months, 4 days ago

@BisonHero: Crazy how Jeff looks the same but Ryan looks COMPLETELY different. Sounds the same but a bit higher pitch, he's too pitchy brah

#16 Posted by Nightriff (2878 posts) - 6 months, 4 days ago

Gears was released, the same day I went to Gamespot with $600 and bought a 360 and the game and bunch of other shit, god damn has it aged.

#17 Posted by Bourbon_Warrior (4494 posts) - 6 months, 4 days ago

lol at 12:00 Brad never changes.

Wow. That's awesome. And exactly how they review and talk about games now. Cool.

The weirdest thing is the type of questions they get in the chat... cutting off limbs? Customising weapons? You forget that this was before literally everyone knew what Gears was about

#21 Posted by myketuna (1365 posts) - 6 months, 4 days ago

Brad and Jeff sold me on this game. I saw this live and bought this for my birthday (which was a couple of days later).

#22 Posted by Mendelson9 (304 posts) - 6 months, 4 days ago

After posting this, I have the urge to watch more old episodes of On the Spot. I did find another good video of Elite Beat Agents with Ryan and Alex. I just don't know what to call these videos. Retro Quick Looks?

Well, Quick Look Throwback(s) is taken by the crew themselves. Quick Look EX is also taken. How about (to keep with the Street Fighter-sounding titles) Quick Look Alpha(s)?

I like this. Downloading as much pre-2008 On the Spot as I can now.

"young" brad looks like a guy I knew who was really into the band Tool

#26 Posted by Sinusoidal (312 posts) - 6 months, 4 days ago

My gawd! What are those things coming out of their controllers?!

#27 Posted by captainanderson (241 posts) - 6 months, 4 days ago

Everyone's reaction to Jeff's first chainsaw kill is priceless.

#28 Posted by Jace (1039 posts) - 6 months, 4 days ago

Man, Brad put on some pounds. He had a visible jawline in 2006, lol.

#29 Posted by CaptainTightPants (2775 posts) - 6 months, 4 days ago

Rich Gallup needs to be in every Quick Look ever.

I know, right? Right when Jeff started showing you can go into cover, I though how crazy it is that Gears of War is basically the first game with a cover system like that (I know Killswitch did it first). That's not that long ago.

Edit: Even better! Regenerating health was a new thing too.

#31 Posted by aceofspudz (670 posts) - 6 months, 4 days ago

@Jace: Everyone put on some pounds!

#32 Posted by FlemmingM (652 posts) - 6 months, 4 days ago

Oh god, Ryan Mcdonald breaking the lens, was a pretty darn good ending.

#33 Posted by Lazyaza (1991 posts) - 6 months, 4 days ago

That was great, I love how they talk about things like regenning health, cover, big burly guys and 4 weapon load outs with those all being such new and different for shooters at the time and now its like god fuck enough of that shit already. haha

#34 Posted by Benny (1610 posts) - 6 months, 4 days ago

There's a great one of these featuring Greg and lost planet that absolutely everyone should see because I think it's part of the UNOOOO A UNOOO episode (UNO versus UNO) featuring the first mention of the green zero but no explanation given.

Yeah. It's funny how things that we take for granted today were not so common 6 years ago. Like that guy asking if co-op can be played over Xbox Live.

And Mountain Dew references. Timely.

Well not really. Halo basically is recovering health, and then there's Call of Duty 2 as well which was narrowly pre-Xbox 360.

#37 Posted by Scottish_Sin (198 posts) - 6 months, 3 days ago

Thanks for this. I mean, we all know how long in the tooth this generation of consoles has been but I guess it doesn't really dawn on you until you watch old videos like that. It's also kinda crazy to see how excited everybody was for it back then compared to what we've come to expect now. Which is not a knock in the slightest, but just really interesting.

#38 Posted by murisan (1119 posts) - 6 months, 3 days ago

Man, six years later, and we've not come very far (games wise).

#39 Posted by RadixNegative2 (461 posts) - 6 months, 3 days ago

Yeah their Wii coverage was excellent (especially the Wii marathon). I remember being in high school and staying up late to watch all that stuff. Good times.

So I'm super excited for this Sunday when they'll be doing kinda the same with the Wii U. Should be great.

I remember this line. To this very day I still remember this. Must have laughed my ass off back then.

EDIT- Woah I thought Gamespot got rid of all it's old On The Spots.

Apparently he's been in line for the Wii U since before the hurricane

This is a wild reminder of how incredibly horrible gamespot was/is! Worse than a gathering of Halo fanboys.

@RadixNegative2: HAhahahaha it's funny that they called him "Triforce Johnson" exactly like I did.
#47 Edited by DoctorWelch (2607 posts) - 6 months, 3 days ago

Brad and Ryan have this weird hesitancy in their voice or something that makes them sound way different than how they sound now. It makes me wonder what I'll sound like in...ten years.

#48 Posted by Redsox44 (470 posts) - 6 months, 3 days ago

Man I remember the wii marathon, oh Rich Gallup. Good times.

#49 Posted by pandorasbox (251 posts) - 6 months, 3 days ago

How old is Ryan now? And how old was he in that video? I feel like his personality and voice aged 30 years in the span of 4.

#50 Posted by muralbat (149 posts) - 6 months, 3 days ago

This is so good, before everyone got so demanding on games and it was all "OH SHIT THIS IS AMAZING" which everything still is y'all
