Hey! Can you code? Wanna work here?
Giant Bomb is looking for an Unprofessional Software Engineer
Maybe someday GB will have a need for someone with high-performance computing background. One day....
@benbeyond: pretty much the only thing keeping me from applying
I knew SF was stupid expensive, but I didn't realize just how bad it has become... a typical software engineer making, let's say, $80K here in Pittsburgh, would need to make $230K to live similarly in SF. Do even the very top people make this much? GB is probably cool as hell to work at, but no way is it worth that kind of quality-of-life downgrade. :( Best of luck to you guys, though!
@drzing: I wouldn't say that 230k figure is accurate, apples to apples at least. Your quality of life wouldn't be downgraded, just different. This is a unique place. Its a common saying that San Francisco is 49 square miles surrounded by reality. There's lots of really smart people here who want to be around other really smart people and for the most part stuff like a house, a car and a yearly vacation in Cancun aren't really desired things. Its more about building awesome shit. ...and in some cases cashing out and then getting house, car and vacation.
Personally I'd be miserable living any place else.
@robotmayo: Oh damn. Like 5 people proof read that and no one caught it. Grr...
Interestingly enough a Google search for EC6 autocompletes to EC6 javascript. I wonder if a bunch of people were WTF? and looking up EC6. :)
@edgework You should have whoever made this post include some of the benefits that CBS offers as not including them doesn't make it look very competitive. The job posting is also really general, it's like you're looking for a front end engineer and DevOps person all in one which is unicorn status.
@gravytrain: In a lot of smaller companies / teams, the dev ops people ARE the front end support people too. :) (Did that for ten years for a start-up that had just enough potential to get consistent funding and revenue, but we never could reach take-off point.) It wouldn't surprise me if GB ran on that model.
@gravytrain: I can tell you from looking at job opportunities in many cities, everyone is looking for unicorn status employees.
@gravytrain: Well we're looking for a JavaScript rockstar but will settle for a good, all around generalist. Basically.
The Dev Ops part is mostly so the person understands what they are forcing our Dev Ops people to support. We have a full time Dev Ops team.
In general that req describes most of the members of my team. So these unicorns do exist.
...and the benefits?
Its Giant Bomb!
For real though, CBS does have some really good benefits. Good 401k with matching, stock grants. Good Healthcare. Lots of other good stuff.
@jesus_phish: I work in IT so I'm well aware of this, it's merely the combo that is odd.
I'm the most unprofessional software engineer, in that I am not a software engineer by trade and wouldn't know what I'm doing.
From the description I'd say this is a good first or second job. The tech used is pretty relevant and it seems to be a fun environment. Not enticing enough for me to relocate across the pond, but I'm also jealous of whoever will get this.
Whoever you are new GB West duder, demand during your interview that you'll only sign up if you get to host the MUD and Quake servers!
Man, this would also be a dream job for me. I want to know everything I can to increase my chances of being hired before applying. Languages, programs, work flow, things I can fork, projects I should build, who to follow, how not to be a nervous wreck in every interview!
