I'm still waiting on the Hyperdimension Neptunia coverage that
said they were going to do back when Happy Hour was a thing.Giant Bomb needs a JRPG guy
I don't think its that big of a deal. If I want a review for a JRPG I'll go to 1up.com, I'd rather hear what Jeremy Parish and friends have to say on that subject anyway. In any case JRPG's are too niche to justify hiring on a new guy just to appease those of us who like that sort of thing.
No, they don't and I'm sick of people saying that they don't 'respect', understand or research JRPGs properly. None of the crew specialise in any one genre so why would you need one dude specifically for JRPGs? JRPGs are not sacred, they shouldn't be treated as such just because FF7 happens to be one of the most successful games of all time.
They don't need to go out and specifically hire someone just to fill that void, however if in the hiring of someone for something more generalized, that person also happens to be a great fan of JRPGs then so much the better. Dave isn't around just to talk about weird Eastern European games. Instead, it just happens to be an interest of his, niche as it is, and that's why the genre (if you can call it one) gets the coverage around here that it does.
I think it would be great if GB had someone who was into JRPGs and MMOs but they don't so, I go elsewhere for more reliable insight regarding those game types. The internet consists of more than just Giant Bomb.

The yearly Endurance Run is all the JRPG coverage this website needs.
Agreed.
JRPGs are terrible anyway. I don't need a specialist to tell me a game is bad.
They might not like to hear this. But They did lured a big chunk of JRPG/RPG users with the Persona 4 endurance run. Now it's their choice whether this people need to be served or not, but I think it would be healthier to have just a little bit more of it if possible.
If the game is good, they shouldn't need a specialist to say so.. the problem is, when was the last good JRPG?
Radiant Historia was excellent, but they don't cover handhelds much.
Just wait for Xenoblade though, it definitely deserves the praise it's been getting elsewhere and is easily a contender for GoTY.
Fuck...I just said Im fine with how it is. But I'd support Shane getting on the Bomb crew, regardless of JRPG's. He's always been my favorite media dude other than Shoe and MielkeI support this idea if and only if it leads to Shane Bettenhausen getting hired on.
... He'd be such an amazing fit.
FF13-2.when was the last good JRPG?
Oh man opinions.
Anyway, @PenguinDust: knows what's up, there is no need to hire someone who covers JRPGs. If they ever hire someone else and he or she enjoys the genre that can bring a whole new layer to GB content since like the OP says, JRPG coverage on the site is next to none. Seriously I would go against everyone here in a knife fight to argue I am the biggest fan of the genre in the GB community but even I don't care they do not cover it.
What I care about from GB is funny/entertaining content and that is what I want them to focus on. If GB was just another site with boring feature articles or reviews it probably wouldn't be one I visited. I just like hearing the GB crew be themselves. I am not going to disagree that it could probably bring in more potential readers or whatever but it's certainly not something I care about as someone who closely follows the genre.
GB definitely has some genre-holes on their staff.
I want someone to be there who would have been all FUCK YEAH, DISGAEA 4
I like the idea of them having a sports guy, that pushes them into 'small town news team' territory. I'm not sure jrpgs are relevant enough to have a specific staff member for them, the guys have a collective knowledge of these games, I think the community just have to expect more from them in terms of coverage and reviews.
Is it ok that they completely ignore a game like Fifa? Sure it's an annualised sports game, but it's one of the better ones, its more popular than Madden and they've never covered it before. Not even a quick look. They do have to be selective of the games they cover, but isn't that what quick looks and podcasts are for? It's pretty annoying when they ramble on the podcast because of a lack of games to talk about, where actually plenty of games came out - they just haven't bothered to play them.
Yeh, unfortunately when one of the guys hates on a game that the others haven't played, they'll tend to all jump on the bandwagon and not challenge his claims. And none of them even seem to want to like JRPGs in the first place.
and this is totally ruled out by how much Jeff and Vinny loved Persona 4.And none of them even seem to want to like JRPGs in the first place.
I think it's fair to say we can expect a good amount of Persona 5 coverage and a review. Atlus actually make good JRPGs still.
I could certainly go somewhere else for my JRPG needs, but it is as to say that I'm not welcome here.

@Vegetable_Side_Dish said:I like Forza 2 a lot, but does that mean I like other racing games and want to talk about them? No, not at all. Also I doubt we'll get a P5 review. Unless there is an Endurance Run for it (let's be honest, probably won't be, though that isn't really a problem) I highly doubt anyone but Vinny will really even play it and I will throw out the bold prediction he won't even beat it. Jeff might play it a bit but I doubt for very long on his own.
Also if Atlus is out there making amazing JRPGs worthy of coverage/review why does the GB crew not cover them? Because they've said like 10 million times now they don't like the genre.

Kessler was kind of that for a bit wasn't he? Although I don't know what's happened to the interns lately, they've seemed to off fallen off the face of the earth.

Every type of game is covered on the site. Even annualized sports franchises get reviews, 5 stars reviews(http://www.giantbomb.com/nba-2k12/61-35564/). Time to show the JRPG the same level of respect has roster updates on a disc.

So you say they need someone for a genre because they don't respect it then just immediately insult sports games as a genre?
I didn't see an insult towards the sports genre in his topic.
Oh look... hypocrites.

They have other main duties and will rarely review games. We haven't had reviews of some pretty major titles (DA2, Witcher 2, Shogun 2, Heroes 6, the list goes on)

Sure, when JRPGs stop being terrible again.
Boom.
That was neither clever nor biting enough to deserve a boom. As insults go, that was rote and cliche.
Ok how about this. When JRPG's stop being super fucking creepy and over sexualising women as objects with little to no real emotion or brain activity. And when they actually have plots that are more than "Oh no, something bad, lets save the world and stare at this chicks ass. And tits. And make her do weird stuff so we can stare at her ass more. I think giantbomb could use a JRPG guy. Until then, enjoy your bad games.
@Pibo47: http://www.giantbomb.com/mass-effect-2/61-21590/ Yeah, yeah, I know it was about more than what you just described, but so is every jrpg.
Giant Bomb needs a lot of dudes if they're going to do serious coverage of all types of games. Like, for instance, someone who understands that saying "these games sure are designed to take your quarters" while mindlessly credit feeding (thereby effectively ignoring the level design, the enemy design, the scoring system etc. and all the effort that has gone into balancing that shit) doesn't constitute an adequate analysis of an arcade game.

Broad, vague stereotypes without supporting examples and arguments will get you nowhere.
Your probably thinking about DoA... Fighting game franchise, not sure were you see the hypersexualisation in games listed in the first post@Hailinel said:

Whenever my wife catches me playing a JRPG, she always says, "This looks awful... how can you play this?" My response is: "You know how your romance novels are smutty and terribly written, but you claim that you read them 'for the story'? Well, I play JRPGs 'for the combat system'."
Seriously, though... if there were more games with Western plots and dialogue but innovative battle systems like JRPG's tend to have, I'd gladly give up the androgynous characters and terrible voice acting in a second.
But to the point, I support JRPG coverage on GB being a bit more thoughtful.
I can't tell if this guy is trolling or not. He isn't serious, right?Ok how about this. Mass Effect 2:
Over-sexualising women as objects: Check
Generic story about saving the world: Check
Staring at tits and ass: Check
It's funny because according to your achievement page you've even S-ranked the game. Its pretty astounding you can say all that stuff about JRPGs (which isn't true, factually) and seemed to enjoy (or at least spent enough time to get all the achievements) in a game that isn't much different than a lot of JRPGs outside of the dialogue wheel nonsense (and there have been plenty of JRPGs to have similar dialogue choice options). I mean shit, ME2 may as well be a scaled down Suikoden. It has a lot in common with it.
I honestly think he's a troll.
