Poll: Giantbomb's 5 GOTY's Which is Your Favourite? (234 votes)

GTA IV 11%
Uncharted 2 18%
Mass Effect 2 39%
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim 21%
XCOM: Enemy Unknown 12%

So the talk about five years of Giantbomb got me thinking of their picks for GOTY which is your personal favourite game out of the bunch? I'm not sure if this is retreading old ground or not (i'm sure I would be told if it was) but I want to see what year was the community favourite.

In all honesty I've only played 3/5. The two I have not are GTAIV and Skyrim. GTA because I was never into the series (played a fair bit of 3 and a little bit/watched a lot of Vice City) it just never clicked for me. As for Skyrim I'm waiting for a GOTY edition to hit because at this point why not wait it out. Also I didn't get into Oblivion mostly as a result of playing Fallout 3 and Dragon Age before hand. With those 2 games I felt like I got the big open world Bethesda stuff and a good fantasy world which made Oblivion seem flat as a result. Insult if you wish but yeah haven't played two of these IMPORTANT GAMES!!! lol.

My personal pick is going to be Mass Effect 2. Phenomenal game.

What about you.....son?

GTA IV ruled that year better than the other games ruled their respective years

Uncharted 2 because that game is amazing.

Uncharted 2, though Mass Effect 2 is far and away the best Bioware game and the only one that I'd really like to revisit in the future. The other 3 games aren't great; Skyrim especially had like 5 better games to choose from in the same year. XCOM is a solid game that came out in an atrocious year.

Mass Effect 2. I played though it five times since I wanted to get the whole ME2 experience. I love that game and consider it one of my favorite games.

The first time I played Mass Effect 2 was just a fucking blast, and each playthrough afterwards has been almost as awesome, so obviously that one. The only other contender, XCOM, became a grind after getting the next set of gear and the overhyped end boss was just that.

I've only played XCOM and ME2; but out of those two, definitely XCOM.

I'd say Uncharted 2. The most admirable of the bunch.

#8 Edited by Redbullet685 (6044 posts) -

Gotta give it to Uncharted 2. I just love that game so much.

#9 Posted by mrfluke (5152 posts) -

fuck thats a real hard choice, probably the hardest poll ive seen on here.

but id gotta give it to mass effect 2, closely followed by xcom.

#10 Posted by Ramone (2966 posts) -

Skyrim, I adore that game despite its numerous flaws.

#11 Posted by ArbitraryWater (11734 posts) -

Probably ME2. I think Skyrim and XCOM are great, but they didn't capture me the same way ME2 did.

#12 Posted by Video_Game_King (36272 posts) -

It's between Skyrim and GTAV for me, so I guess Skyrim? The driving controls in that were easier to get, probably because they didn't exist.

Gotta give it to Uncharted 2. I just love that game so much.

#14 Posted by Kedi2 (248 posts) -

Skyrim, followed by ME2

#15 Posted by Irishdoom (333 posts) -

Yeah, Xcom is a little overrated for me. Not within the year itself, and it probably did deserve GOTY, but overall it seemed like a really good game that won in an off year. For me it's between Skyrim and Uncharted 2. I played through Uncharted 2 like 5 times, so it gets my vote. Granted I haven't finished ME2, I'm playing it right now, but at this point ME1 was a better game. :)

MGS4 MOTHERFUCKERS, THAT IS THE TRUE WINNER!!!!

saints row the third

#19 Posted by chilibean_3 (1640 posts) -

You typed Skyrim when you meant Saint's Row: The Third.

I still picked Mass Effect.

#20 Posted by Castiel (2616 posts) -

Uncharted 2. It's also one of the best games from this generation.

#21 Edited by UlquioKani (1057 posts) -

Mass Effect 2 all day every day. I don't love Skyrim or GTA IV like ME2 and I haven't played the others. Also Thane Krios.

the only one of those i never played was uncharted.

i love everygame on that list (aside from uncharted). my favorite would have to be skyrim though.

Mass Effect 2

Other than that the only game I have strong feeling towards is XCOM.

Fuck the rest.

#24 Edited by MEATBALL (3238 posts) -

Mass Effect 2, but I absolutely loved all 5 of those games to bits.

#25 Edited by Abendlaender (2804 posts) -

For me XCom or Skyrim. Didn't really care about the rest

SAINT'S ROW THE THIRD

#27 Posted by MooseyMcMan (11004 posts) -

Mass Effect 2. As much as I wanted to make the Saints Row the Third joke, I just can't.

Man, Mass Effect 2! What a glorious, fantastic game.

Also, someone already made the Saints Row the Third joke.

Mass Effect 2 easily.

Mass Effect 2.

The shit middle child of the series.

GTA IV's main story was epic. Epic for the wiiiiin.

#30 Edited by FunkasaurasRex (847 posts) -

Mass Effect 2 is probably the most memorable experience to me, but XCOM is definitely the game I'd rather play right now.

#31 Posted by Pr1mus (3907 posts) -
  1. Uncharted 2: Among Thieves
  2. Mass Effect 2
  3. XCOM: Enemy Unknown
  4. Grand Theft Auto IV
  5. Saints Row The Third

Position 2, 3 and 4 could really be tossed around and reordered though. Never played Skyrim and i have no intention to ever do so.

#32 Posted by SuperWristBands (2266 posts) -

Skyrim. To be honest though I don't really adore any of those games (but I greatly dislike GTA IV).

#33 Posted by believer258 (11903 posts) -

Skyrim.

I am still trying to figure out why they gave GOTY to ME2 instead of Red Dead myself. It was good. It wasn't "that" good. The only thing I can think is that two years prior they gave it to GTA IV and they wanted to be fair or some such,

#36 Posted by ImmortalSaiyan (4676 posts) -

Uncharted 2 is my favorite. Then either Skyrim or Mass Effect 2.

It never got it because Jeff does not like it. I personally am happy GB gave it to Mass Effect 2. So many other places gave it to Red Dead and I prefer ME2. I could name at least 5 games I much prefer to them both from 2010 but still.

#38 Posted by Godlyawesomeguy (6398 posts) -

GTA IV with all of my heart.

#39 Posted by JasonR86 (9705 posts) -

Looking back it's probably still Uncharted 2. I adore GTA 4 and Xcom and I really like Mass Effect 2 but they didn't get me like Uncharted 2 did. Looking back on Skyrim I don't like it as much as I liked Morrowind or Oblivion even if gameplay-wise and design-wise it is more sound.

#40 Posted by DarthOrange (3862 posts) -

Uncharted 2. Skyrim was a really shitty pick. Fuck Brad Shoemaker. I would buy that shirt.

#41 Posted by Mezmero (1899 posts) -

It's Skyrim for me. While I probably enjoyed the premise, story, and settings of every other game on the list slightly more, the breadth of the Skyrim experience will stick with me a lot longer than these other games.

#42 Edited by probablytuna (3657 posts) -

Man, looking at that list. All of them are great games. But Mass Effect 2 is the one for me, even though I spent way more hours in Skyrim than all the games from that list combined.

Saints Row The Third.

Saints Row, the real 2011 GOTY.

#45 Posted by ShadowConqueror (3051 posts) -

Skyrim, Mass Effect, XCOM in that order. I don't like GTA4 and haven't played Uncharted.

#46 Posted by Zekhariah (697 posts) -

Mass Effect 2.

I'm waiting for the XCOM complete expanded version, so that might be competitive to me. Otherwise, limited interested / there are now substantially better titles not part of that list (personal basis anyway). The best part of looking at old GOTY listings is when you notice that there were multiple games the year after that were better than a prior GOTY. Progress, etc!

#47 Posted by TangoUp (307 posts) -

Mass Effect 2.

That said, this trilogy business in series that have one central narrative is getting really old because game designers are showing practically zero aptitude in actually splitting a story in 3 parts. Why can't they just have a volume 1 and 2, a la Kill Bill?

I'd still rate Red Dead Redemption higher than ME2 though. But since RDR is not on the leeeesst ...

#49 Posted by Hector (3364 posts) -

Easily Mass Effect 2. It's the best of the triology in the ME trilogy and one of the best Sci-Fi RP games out there.

#50 Edited by joshthebear (2700 posts) -

Ryan's heel turn against Saints Row is still one of the best GOTY moments ever.
