Poll: GotG Round 1: Mass Effect 2 vs. Crusader Kings II (676 votes)

Mass Effect 2 83%
Crusader Kings II 17%

Main thread

Full bracket

The front runner takes on the cult favourite, will we witness an upset? (Probably not.)

Mass Effect 2 (2010)

What the community has to say:

Mass Effect 2 is one of the most engaging and captivating games we have seen this generation. Players who buy this game should make sure that they have plenty of free time over the coming weeks because when they start playing, it’s going to be difficult to put the controller down. Interesting, characters that have morally divisive personalities bring the world to life in a way that few games have ever achieved.

Crusader Kings II (2012)

What the community has to say:

If you like strategy games, if you like medieval history, like making cool stories, even if you just like incest, this game has what you neeeeed.

I'm voting for Crusader Kings II, if only because very few people will, and I don't hold Mass Effect 2 in the regard that roughly 98% of the community does.

Mass Effect 2 all the way! I've never played Crusader Kings though, so I feel kind of bad for it if it's legitimately a good game.

The second one because it has the word "Kings" in it.

This is easily one of the weirdest matchups yet.

The right answer here is:

Tralse.

Crusader Kings 2. Can you take over kingdoms by murdering your relatives in Mass Effect?

#7 Posted by MooseyMcMan (11275 posts) -

Remember when I said I was done with this over the TRAGEDY that is "one of the greatest games of all time" (Vinny Caravella quote) losing to Portal 2?

I lied.

Don't feel too bad fans of Crusader Kings, just another victim on the road to GotG for Mass Effect 2.

not even a fight.

I can't think of two more similar games, truly a contest of evenly matched and quite comparable contestants.

@cale: If the Last of Us wasn't a PS3 exclusive and came out 4 years ago it would probably win. Though of course there's always a game like Vagrant Story out there that's just a shitload better than every other game to come out in its generation and it would lose a poll battle because people are stupid and polls are for stupid people.

#13 Posted by Hunter5024 (5805 posts) -

I really hope Mass Effect 2 doesn't win this overall. I can see why someone would like the game, though I really don't understand why they'd like it to the degree that so many people do.

#14 Posted by ShadowConqueror (3064 posts) -

I never played Crusader Kings, but it seems cool. However, Mass Effect 2 is everything I could want from a science fiction game, and is my second favorite game of this generation.

#15 Posted by Canteu (2821 posts) -

I voted Crusader Kings 2, because Crusader Kings 2.

#16 Posted by bmehlers (130 posts) -

By the way, I liked the original Mass Effect better than Mass Effect 2.

This.

Haven't played Crusader Kings 2 so I won't participate in the poll, just want to say that ME2 is pretty alright.

Well I'm of the opinion that The Last of Us is the best game ever made, so no argument from me there. I just take a realistic approach to this poll and also happened to very much enjoy Mass Effect 2, so it doesn't bother me if it wins.

#20 Posted by TobbRobb (4730 posts) -

I'm not the biggest fan of either. But Crusader Kings tickles me the right way in theory.

#21 Posted by weegieanawrench (1940 posts) -

@bmehlers: Hey me too! Don't tell anyone, but I secretly love The Mako.

#22 Posted by danm_999 (75 posts) -

Very odd matchup.

Though I don't doubt the matchups will get more and more eclectic as this goes on.

#23 Posted by Karkarov (3172 posts) -

Why is an extremely niche game like Crusader King's 2 even in the running? Not that it matters, Mass Effect 2 being against it round one basically means it is going to get beat like a rented red headed step child one arm one legged mule.

#24 Edited by BaconGames (3482 posts) -

I really like CK2 but holy fuck is that shit way too janky to be going up against anything else in this bracket, let alone a monster like Mass Effect 2. The menus are mega-obtuse and unfriendly in a way that only watching someone else fumble through could begin to illuminate. I think CK2 is a lot of fun but it's another situation of a worthy mention but probably deserved defeat.

This is a bullshit pairing.

No. I just don't like Mass Effect 2.

#27 Posted by Fredchuckdave (5705 posts) -

@cale: Yeah though moreso I think Mass Effect 2 as a top 5 game is a fine choice, top 1 is questionable.

#28 Posted by guiseppe (2842 posts) -

ME2 is on my personal #1 spot for game of the generation, so that easily wins.

#29 Edited by gike987 (1758 posts) -

The biggest disappointment of the generation and the game that made me stop caring about Bioware vs. Paradox best game, couldn't be an easier choice. Too bad tons of people who never even seen or played it will vote against it though. The Giant Bomb community have really showed some awful taste in video games in these polls.

#30 Edited by Kaiserreich (709 posts) -

This is so dumb. Why not just do Mass Effect 2 vs. Dark Souls and be done with it? Why even put niche games in the bracket?

#31 Posted by McLargepants (391 posts) -

This was hard. I ended up going with Mass Effect, but Crusader Kings is a phenomenal game that more people should try.

#32 Edited by Pr1mus (3949 posts) -

I don't know if the pairing of games is random or not. Some of it looks super random like this one or MGS4 vs Geometry Wars while others like MK vs SF4 and Dota 2 vs LoL does not. Anyway Crusader Kings II and Civ 5 would have made for a more interesting pairing.

In any case Mass Effect 2 is fantastic either way and will likely end up winning the whole thing.

Also where's @animasta to tell everyone here how crazy they are?

#33 Posted by Milkman (17001 posts) -

I have to question the purpose of putting such niche games like Crusader Kings 2 or Dragon Quest IX in the bracket when they clearly stand no chance against any other games.

That's like saying why allow teams from the Ivy League into the NCAA tournament because they can't compete against the teams from the major conferences. This is how 64 spot brackets work. There are always entrants that stand no chance of ever winning even a single round, but when you have 64 places that is inevitable. If seeded correctly, it's typically not until the final 16 of a 64 entrant tournament that you really start getting tough matchups.

pppfffftt this is not even a contest

#37 Edited by RetroVirus (1479 posts) -

Mass Effect 2 has Mordin. He is the very model of a Scientist Salarian, and as such, cannot be beat.

#38 Edited by BenLuke (67 posts) -

Crusader Kings, Bioware games have never especially impressed me. I mean, they're fine, but the plot and characters are so cookie-cutter and barely change from game to game. There really isn't any game like Crusader Kings, though, even with it's many faults.

#39 Posted by Trilogy (2672 posts) -

Super easy decision here. ME2.

#40 Posted by Kain55 (132 posts) -

ME 2 is probably my GotG so this is a pretty easy pick. I'd abstain from voting since I haven't played Crusader Kings, but I'm quite certain that it doesn't stand a chance anyways and I want to see the poll results. There are many games in these polls that I wish I had played more of.

#41 Posted by LackingSaint (1830 posts) -

I voted Crusader Kings 2 despite not actually playing it and really really enjoying Mass Effect 2. I don't really understand why I did it at this point, it just felt like the nice thing to do.

#42 Edited by Leonshade (61 posts) -

I love CK2, but I gotta vote for Mass Effect here.

#43 Posted by Cybertification (203 posts) -

How come people don't seem to realize the 2 in Crusader Kings 2 probably matters and shouldn't be skipped?

#44 Posted by Vanick (332 posts) -

I have to go with Mass Effect 2 on this one. Crusader Kings just wasn't my thing.

#45 Edited by Noblenerf (328 posts) -

Eugh, I need to stop voting on these... seeing the results is upsetting.

#46 Edited by Gatehouse (662 posts) -

Sorry Crusader Kings, you seemed fun, but Mass Effect 2 is one hell of a game.

#47 Posted by Mezmero (1961 posts) -

I hear good things about Crusader Kings 2 but I have yet to actually play it. Mass Effect 2 is the best Star Trek experience of the era. The Abrahms Star Trek movie was great too but Mass Effect 2 was taking it beyond that level of detail. If not for that third game it would've been my all time favorite sci-fi experience. I feel like this vote comes down to your preference for either a messiah complex or a god complex.

#48 Posted by Krataur (371 posts) -

Why would I vote for the worst Mass Effect game over one of the top 10 games of the generation?

Unashamedly voted for Crusader Kings 2.

#49 Posted by frankfartmouth (1018 posts) -

ME2. Crusader Kings was good for what it was, but it just isn't really my thing.

#50 Edited by altairre (1214 posts) -

Mass Effect 2 is my favorite game of all times. It's an easy choice for me.
