GotG Round 3: Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots vs. Portal 2

I have to go with Portal 2 on this one.

I want Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots to win.

How in the holy hell is MGS loosing? Anyway, Metal Gear got my vote, never have I played anything quite like it before. Insane storytelling, coupled with a proper Japanese ass game that I couldn't put down.

I feel like Portal 2 could be a game of the generation, at the time of release I liked it better than the Witcher 2, my previous GotG front runner, so I'd be happy if it took the title

I usually know which game I liked more, but these feel pretty equal to me. I can't remember all the little details about MGS4 anymore, so I'll just assume they were good and vote for it.

metal gear got my vote, portal 2 was well written but otherwise pretty boring and drawn out compared to portal 1.

Metal gear was crazy as hell and horribly written but i was hooked on it all the way through.

I really don't get why people like Portal 2 so much. Yes, its good but the actual GAME part is worse than the first they spend so much time trying to tell a story and putting you in awfully boring locations that you spend way too much time outside of testing chambers.

Metal Gear Solid 4 is better than Portal 2, IMO. I enjoyed Portal 2 quite a bit but I don't think it's as good as people make it out to be.

Slightly stunned that Portal is beating Metal Gear. I did love Portal 2, I guess I just love Metal Gear more.

Portal 2 is really good, but Metal Gear Solid 4 is just an incredible experience that I think should deserved this win. Like I said earlier, being exclusive is what is probably going to hurt it.

Wow this was a super hard decision, but Portal 2 is winning handily? That seems insane to me. I love the shit out of Portal 2, but MGS 4 maybe the single most insane and entertaining experience of this generation.

I disagree that the game part is worse and I disagree that the locations are boring.

I wonder if too much time has passed that people have forgot just how FAKIN INSANE MGS4 was? Or maybe people just don't like it all that much anymore? Wasnt it one of the games people flip flopped on? Anyhow, can not BELIEVE it's loosing here.

Really didn't care for MGS4. But then again I hate the condescending ass way Kojima tells a narrative. Listen to me wax poetic for 45 minutes about how war is bad. Then go shoot a whole shit load of dudes and - I don't know - there's a giant robot and a vampire guy. Sure, it's fucking crazy, but crazy isn't inherently good. There's been plenty of crazy games out there that don't come at the sacrifice of the audience's patience.

I fell that sequels should be justified by what they brought new to the table and in that regard I fell MGS IV changed things up more than Portal 2 .That cqc fight with Liquid was crazy on a whole nother level. Portal 2 i fell was just portal with better story and characters but not a memorable moment like MGS IV.

I didn't play MGS IV but from what I understand Kojima games are an acquired taste, right? And MGS IV is the most "MGS" of all the games in the series? Maybe this is just a case of accessibility (helps that Portal 2 came out on almost everything).

I'm curious to see how console exclusivity might hurt some of the other games in this contest further along. Like, say, The Last of Us.

Both of these games are terrible. Portal 1 and Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker are both far better representatives of their franchises for this generation.

I'll never understand why people think Portal 1 was better than Portal 2. It's not even close in my mind.

But I understand even less why MGS4 got so much praise. That game was a mess.

"haha so crazy" only takes you so far. Metal Gear shouldn't have even made it to the third round. I have no complaints about Portal 2.

Pleasantly surprised how clear cut this is. While I would have preferred Portal 1, any portal game has at least one thing over any MGS game- competent storytelling.

Fucking travesty right here. And I really like Portal 2.

Exclusivity and the polarizing nature of its narrative are hurting MGS4 here. The leap from MGS4 from 3 was tremendous (not just due to new hardware either) than Portal 2 over the first. Even if you hate the batshit crazy nature of MGS4 story I think there is enough incredible moments to overtake the best moments from Portal 2.

Chapters 1 and 2 offered new and varied ways to tackle objectives and navigate the battlefield. And both included some good set-pieces and presented unique (non)-combat situations for you to engage with.

Chapter 3 slows everything down and for some this was the low point. Until you ride shotgun on a fucking motorcycle whilst being chased throughout nameless East Europe city. That was finally an awesome cut-scene that you actually got to play, hell part of me wanted to just sit back an enjoy the show but you get to shoot down UAVs and play the meanest game of Road Rash since the 90's.

Chapter 4 is also a slower paced chapter but with some good ol' nostalgia mixed in. Has a great Sniper battle boss fight, an awesome Gekko fight, and a fucking Metal Gear on Metal Gear battle to the death.

Chapter 5, while short, provides another open-ish section that you can tackle in whatever manner you wish. A boss fight that probably left you stumped and messing around with controllers. And a fucking duel a top a warship against your brother all while set the the music of the previous games.

MGS4 is a goddamn masterpiece, crazy? Sure. But a crazy masterpiece is still a masterpiece.

Portal 2 is one of my favorite games ever, so I'll be voting for it every time.

MGS4, BioShock, and Uncharted 2 are all losing today. One of those would have been my picks for GOTG. Let's hope Skyrim and The Last of Us are not voted out.

This one is hard because these games are such polar opposites of one another. That being said, Solid Snake is in my heart and I'm going with that, even though it'll probably not move on.

I love both games, but Portal 2 wins this matchup.

Anyone that thinks Portal 2 is a worse game than MGS4 is a monster and should have a crucifix thrown at them to see if they catch on fire.

While I thought that there's no way it should have beaten Civ V last bracket, this is an easy decision for me.

I like games I can actually play properly. MGS4 was not that. (though the segment where you return to Shadow Moses was pretty incredible)

I must be the only person who likes the MGS series but found MGS4 incredibly disappointing. Portal 2 all the way (ALTHOUGH, I would agree with the opinion that it should've been the first Portal in the bracket).
