In all seriousness, Battlefield: Bad Company 2. Not giving your system of choice (and specs, in the case it is a PC) and personal preferences severely limits the possible suggestions we may give you.
AC:Brotherhood is something different i haven't logged on i a couple months though so i'm not sure what the community is like, if it's populated or not.
Starcraft BW or Starcraft II. The hands down greatest competitive games out there.
Yeah. Brood War is really easy to get a hold of(you can buy licenses for under a buck I bet) and then you can play on private ladders like iccup. Iccup's a little dead these days but if you ever make it to like C rank(yeah, that is an if, that's how hard Brood War is) you can hop over to the Korean servers, Fish and Brainclan, where you'll be D+ at best but have tons of people to play with. Or just play SC2 cause tons of people do. They're both incredible games and you will literally never be good enough to beat all of your competition no matter how hard you try. People are just too good.
I don't recommend playing Counter-Strike, either 1.6 or source, these days without a clan or something. Pubbing is kinda dead. There's no map rotation servers, and most of them have stupid mods or are just surf maps or something. It's very difficult to just play a good game of counter-strike if you're a pubbie. If you really want to bust your ass to match the competition in an FPS, play some Quake Live. You remember Quake 3 Arena? It's that. But free.
SSF4 and HoN/LoL aren't my thing but they are also extremely competitive communities.
I kind of wish a new Rainbow Six would come out or something like that. I guess I'll have to wait for Gears 3 for something at least somewhat fresh feeling. I do love me some Starcraft, but I don't have the same patience I had for it back in the BW days. And unfortunately I have all my fighting games for PS3
