Something Jeff said on a recent Bombcast about Mass Effect 2 potentially being the greatest game of this generation got me wondering what the GB community thinks it is. Is it Mass Effect 2? Rayman Origins? Rogue Warrior? The possibilities are endless.
Greatest game of the generation
(puts flamesuit on)
for multiplayer Cod 4 the memories i have of that game with friends are just to awesome for words
search and destroy over grown= bliss
single player skyrim no other game this gen has left me with such a sense of adventure when ever i step into the world
Might get shit on, but maybe I'll be able to step out of the way fast enough...
Fallout 3 had me at the first bit of information I heard about it. The concept had me completely enticed and when I saw some gameplay for the first time, just...damn. I couldn't believe something so incredible was coming out and I was going to be able to play it. I didn't think the news I kept hearing about the game could get better but then it did. Liam Neeson is your Dad!

How could it be Dark Souls when Demon's Souls is better? Hazzah!Dark Souls, easily, with maybe StarCraft 2 as second place.
Those two games have been some of the most fun I've had in a long, long time.
Probably Mass Effect 2 or dare I say it ...
I just LOVE how we measure the greatness of a game based on the story and universe and emotional impact of the events and sentimental attachments to the characters rather than THE MOTHER FUCKING GAMEPLAY. What is wrong with us gaming folk?
I really love Mass Effect (I pretend that I don't but I freaking do), but seriously, gameplay wise it does NOT deserve to be in the same boat with games that took the diversity, fun and tightness of the interactivity and gameplay to next-gen levels..
Duke Nukem Forever...
Ok, serious note now. I'd probably say Red Dead Redemption would probably be up there as one of THE games of this generation. I enjoyed my playthru of that game so much. I dont want to throw out games like Skyrim just yet, as I feel there is still bit of "new gameyness" that needs to wear off for me to start examining how the game really was.
Starcraft 2 has given me the most hours of entertainment. I watch about 2-6 hours of games (mostly Psystarcraft, Husky and some Day9) every week.
For me, it's
- Mass Effect 2
- Bastion
- Dead Space
I've actually done top tens every year since 2007 (when I finally had money to buy more than ten games a year). So far probably the best year has been 2009. I mean...
- Resident Evil 5
- Uncharted 2
- Dragon Age: Origins
- Batman: Arkham Asylum
- Borderlands
- Shadow Complex
- Silent Hill: Shattered Memories
- Infamous
- BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger
- FEAR 2: Project Origin
That's an incredible fucking year.
i've been tihnking about this for the last 15 minutes...so here's my list of the top 10 games of this generation
1- Batman: Arkham Asylum
2- Portal
3- Mass Effect 2
4- Saints Row: the Third
5- Uncharted 2
6- Skyrim
7- Metal Gear Solid 4
8- Assasin's Creed: Brotherhood
9- Bastion
10- Braid
there, now that i've wrote all this down i can finally go to sleep
@AhmadMetallic: If the only thing that mattered was gameplay, there would be no point in making new videogames because Asteroids has already been invented.
@Claude: Totally agree. That experience defined this generation for me. Accessible, polished (for an early motion game) and incredibly fun- you don't get much better.
im gonna give some love to vanquish, i wouldn't say it was the best game of the generation but from a purely gameplay perspective that game was the tits

I don't know, there were a lot of games I really liked this generation that felt really special when I first played them. The first Dead Space, Demon's Souls, Batman: Arkham Asylum, Portal, Uncharted 2, Ratchet & Clank: A Crack in Time, and the list goes on. Each one has its advantages over the others and I just don't see there being a definitive greatest game of the generation.

Oh, don't get me wrong, I really loved Demon's Souls, too. But Dark Souls managed to make scratch my undeniable Metroidvania and Wizardry itches at the same time as giving me more of what I loved..
Sometimes it's the universe and story that makes the game stand out. I mean, don't get me wrong, i'm usualy the guy that says "I will not play this shitty art game because the gameplay sucks.", but take Binary Domain for example. The gameplay is just fine, nothing groundbreaking, but the characters and the story makes the game really stand out for me. Hell, Catherine is one of my favorite games and one of the strongest points of that game is the story! Or maybe even Saints Row: The Third. It's not the gameplay that makes the game stand out, but the world around it. And i'm using these three games as example because i can't pick my favorite. yeah i think Catherine, Binary Domain and SR: The Third are the best games of this generation.I just LOVE how we measure the greatness of a game based on the story and universe and emotional impact of the events and sentimental attachments to the characters rather than THE MOTHER FUCKING GAMEPLAY. What is wrong with us gaming folk? Dang it guys , it's Portal 2 ! It's the closest to a perfect game in recent memory .
LBP 1 & 2 are runners up for me . Bayonetta then ME2 . There's my top 5 :D Bioshock and Super Mario Galaxy series are worthy contenders ...
Super Meat Boy.......or maybe Skyrim. Maybe CoD4? Or TF2? Kane & Lynch?! I can't tell anymore. It's been so long since this 'generation' started I couldn't possibly pick one game out of all these years. But probably SuperMeatBoy honestly. Or now that I think about it, maybe Witcher2, especially after the big update. My head is beginning to hurt.

Nier obviously!
You really, really do love that game an awful lot don't you? :D
Don't get me wrong, that game was fucking fantastic... although I would say the soundtrack will stick with me longer than memories of the game itself. Not that that is a criticism of the game of course (^-^)b.
As far as my favourite game of this generation goes... currently I think I would have to say that Dark Souls is indeed top of the unwritten list.
Although the stories of The Darkness and Lost Odyssey ensure that both will remain in my mind for years to come. Damn, this is a tough question, I have always been shit at answering these. Still, at least for now, Dark Souls it is.

Super Mario Galaxy
I second and third this. Best PURE gameplay joy I've had this generation
I'm sure you've read that somewhere, liked it and started using it to defend your favorite games, but if you think about it, it doesn't really make sense. Gameplay has evolved immensely from Pong through Asteroids through Commander Keen, Max Payne and Half-Life and Age of Empires, all through the last 10 years of games.@AhmadMetallic: If the only thing that mattered was gameplay, there would be no point in making new videogames because Asteroids has already been invented.
Gameplay still to this day is being innovated in and improved and pushed forward, just look at the interactivity Just Cause 2 and Crysis and Deus Ex: Human Revolution offer, the non-linear level design, the tightness of the shooting, the precision, how satisfying it is to perform a sequence of skill-ful actions to get great results, the crazy physics that provide unprecedented consequences to your actions, etc...
Meanwhile, the VERY great Mass Effect 3 that is truly fucking touching (I'm serious) and memorable, is adding nothing to the same old block-cover-and-shoot gameplay than giving me some better weapons and attachments, more dynamic enemies and environments for me to move around during firefights, and the same old exploration elements.
Demon's Souls. It was the game that convinced me that this generation would be worth saving if it were hanging off the edge of a cliff. I'd put Dark Souls up there, but Demon's Souls hit hard first. Plus, the story of Demon's Souls puts it barely ahead of Dark Souls for me.
An honorable mention goes to Xenoblade, for proving that there is still hope for the JRPG genre that doesn't focus all it's efforts on pointless CG.
Are you asking what we loved more than anything this generation or what will be the The Legend of Zelda of this generation?
