Poll GUI: "Gooey" or "Gee-You-Ai"? (349 votes)

"Gooey" 46%
"Gee-You-Ai" 54%

I've always thought "G-U-I" was the proper way to pronounce it, saying it like "gooey" just sounds silly to me. Apparently quite a few people prefer a latter though. Like Peter Molyneux.

Where do you stand?

Yea, i've always said "G-U-I" as well, but i dont think either is proper, i think it's just a matter of preference.

I NEVER read acronyms as words. Unless it's a really smooth word that rolls off the tongue like PETA, I feel like a moron if I don't read the letters in their order.. so Gee You Ai. That makes me feel smart.

Isn't it an acronym? In that case it should be G-U-I.

I was always taught it as 'gooey', and tbh I'll take any excuse I can get to say 'gooey'.

Just to counter all the people saying they are in the industry or students, I also am a Computing student but in the UK and people I know say G-U-I. Although I've heard gooey and don't mind it either.

An acronym is not a word.

G.U.I. or better yet, Graphical User Interface.

edit: an acronym is totally pronounced as a word! Learning is fun.

I've always said Gee You Eye. Not Gooey. I don't think I'd even connect what someone meant if they referred to a Gooey.

An acronym is only an acronym because you read it as a word. If you're just pronouncing the letters then it's an initialism ;-)

It's Gooey. How many of you say Haytch-yew-dee, for H.U.D? No, you say Hud, case closed.

Also - a W.Y.S.I.W.Y.G editor - a wizzywig editor. What You See Is What You Get, you'd never say that all at once or by each letter.

RADAR. SCUBA. AWOL. GIF. IMAX. BAFTA. JPG. TIFF. LASER.

Acronyms pronounced as words. Just off the top of my head.

edit: also, what @starvinggamer said.

@kerned: Hey guess what, I just learned a thing. Acronym and Initialisms are two completely different things. When it's an acronym, you can pronounce the word and it shouldn't be preceeded with the definite article "The". If it's an initialism you use "The" and pronounce it with each letter.

The F.B.I., The C.I.A., The O.E.M. etc.

I have to agree (although the "graphical you eye" answer above would also probably not raise too many eyebrows).

I'm actually a little surprised that this poll is so evenly split.

I don't think I've ever head someone say 'gooey'. Perhaps this is a regional thing? People say U.I. as 'you-eye' not 'eww-ee', right?

I studied Computer Science for two years in an American International school and we threw around both ways of pronouncing it I think, though the "gee-you-ai" was used most often. Then I went to a Portuguese college.

a .gif is a giff, not a Gee-Ai-Eff, just as much as a .jpg is a jay-peg and not a Jay-Pee-Gee.

But gooey is just silly. Then again, I call it a Hudd or You-Ai.
