I don't really have the time to focus on two MMO's, so I'm wanted to know which one I should get?

Most of my friends are gonna get SWTOR, but Guild Wars 2 looks way better as a game and bonus no monthly fees, but weirdly none of my friends seem interested in the game. Which should I get?

Do you like your friends? TOR with friends will be more fun than GW2 without.

@Jimbo: They can sometimes get too serious about the game, I remember playing "The World of Warcraft" with them and they got way into it, while was just playing around, you know as if it were a video game. We did have a lot of fun, but really thanks to them getting serious about "The World of Warcraft" I was able to quit the game!

Personally, if I was going to get into an MMO "for realz" I would go with SWTOR, but I have a feeling I'll be playing GW2 more than SWTOR because until next summer I'm barely going to have time to play many regular games, let alone a MMO. Because of GW2 having no subscription, it will be accessible to me anytime and I will therefore probably end up playing it more.

Shoulda been a Poll. But of the two I'd rather play Guild Wars 2. Looks the much better game.

#6 Posted by MikkaQ (9712 posts) - 1 year, 8 months ago

I was asking myself that then I started playing EVE and I think I'm just gonna not play those. Though GW2 looks like a lot more fun. Actually since it's not a monthly-priced game, I'd do it.

Playing with friends is a pretty huge factor in MMOs for me, although a lot of the friends I played with in WoW were just people I met in game. I was pretty interested in SWTOR when I first heard about it, but over time I learned more about GW2 and, no subscription fee aside, it looks like the more fun game to me.

Always opt for the thing that isn't a franchise that has been beat to death for longer than youv'e been alive.

What is this "The World of Warcraft" you are referring to?

Anyway, I too am in two minds, since I have loved most of biowares previous games but the buzz seems to be more in favour of guild wars 2.

Guild Wars 2 if what I would go. However ive played GW1 since 2006....so yeah......

#11 Posted by Fizzy (384 posts) - 1 year, 8 months ago

I don't know, I played the original Guild Wars, Eye of the North, Factions etc...It's kind of a grindfest (Like most MMO's). No monthly fee is a big bonus though. I would like to try out The Old Republic, looks like it will be fun (I like the Star Wars universe so :P)

First SWTOR, then Guild Wars 2. I'll play both at release.

How much time I'll spend with each, will be determined by how much I like 'em. From afar, having played neither, I'm partial to Guild Wars 2. It just looks better off-screen and on paper. Just way more badass. SWTOR seems to be classic WoW-MMORPG mechanics & Bioware storytelling; which is enticing too, but clearly less so than GW2's wholly novel concepts. Either way, I will have extensive playtime with both.

It's never gonna be the same madness like when WoW first came out and I discovered the genre for the first time.

I think I will buy SWTOR and play it for the first free month, just kind of want to explore the world Bioware has been making for all these years but I dont think I will go past 1 or 2 months. I will definitely buy Guild Wars 2, loved the first and the second looks amazing.

How can you say that? You can hit level 20 in no time!

In factions it literally takes like 5 hours

#15 Posted by Gerhabio (1932 posts) - 1 year, 8 months ago

SWTOR and friends.

#16 Posted by Meowshi (2876 posts) - 1 year, 8 months ago

Personally, I'm going to try both. GW2 doesn't have a subscription fee after all.

GW2 looks like the infinitely better game, but SW:TOR is Star Wars, and I'm a sucker for lightsabers.

#17 Posted by Matfei90 (1288 posts) - 1 year, 8 months ago

Guild Wars 2 all the way. SWTOR hasn't done anything to make me take more than a passing glance at it.

#18 Edited by SirPsychoSexy (1225 posts) - 1 year, 8 months ago

A few months ago I would say SWTOR all the way, but after playing in the beta and seeing more GW2 stuff, I think GW2 is the way to go. I might end up getting TOR to level some guys to 50 to experience the stories (which are great btw), but I think after that the combat won't be able to hold my attention for the endgame, it is kind of a less polished more boring version of wow. As for GW2 the combat, the events, the no dps/tank/healing thing all looks amazing.

#19 Posted by PhatSeeJay (3311 posts) - 1 year, 8 months ago

TOR, but I must admit I'm quite curious about GW2 after the latest videos.

#20 Posted by Funkydupe (2921 posts) - 1 year, 8 months ago

I will play TOR. I can't stand more medieval fantasy MMOs for a while.

#21 Posted by Sooty (6695 posts) - 1 year, 8 months ago

Guild Wars 2 looks so much better than TOR and it has no monthly fee.

No brainer for me.

#22 Edited by WinterSnowblind (7367 posts) - 1 year, 8 months ago

Guild Wars 2 looks infinitely superior. No focus on grinding at all, fun gameplay, no annoying MMO conventions, an actual focus on a story, proper team work and co-operation, an original setting (it's medieval-ish but doesn't use many of the cliché's). Everything in the game seems to be designed to innovate or just be really fun.. there's no janky MMO crap at all.

But one of my favourite things about the game is that there's no pressure to keep playing it, thanks to the lack of monthly fee. You can play it for a week, then do some TOR with your friends and come back to GW a few months later. You don't have to worry about wasting money or falling behind your friends.

#23 Posted by AhmadMetallic (18957 posts) - 1 year, 8 months ago

I know nothing about MMOs, but from what I've seen, Guild Wars 2 is soooooooooooooo much more interesting

#24 Posted by WinterSnowblind (7367 posts) - 1 year, 8 months ago

@AhmadMetallic: And I think that will be the dividing point. It's not trying to be an MMO in a conventional sense.. those that don't like MMO's or just want to play a fun game should love it.

Those that are fans of WoW and think that an MMO should be about grinding levels, loots and showing off high level armour.. might not find as much to do in the game.

Uh oh .... now how am I supposed to spend endless hours on this game if I can't grind out my epics? Are you telling me that I'll have to focus on ... playing the game?

GW2 has a lot of great ideas. If GW2 can properly deliver on the promises made, the game will have a lot to offer. I've played a lot of MMO's, and many of the promises that MMO devs make are never kept.

Here's a cool video of GW2's potential in case you haven't seen it:

I don't believe what the people in the vid are saying in some parts. They are trying to sell their game. Aion utilized many of the same tactics is their lead up to launch, and I wouldn't recommend that game.

If I had to bet, I'd bet on SW:TOR though. I'll probably play both.

Been paying a lot of attention to the SW:TOR beta. It looks tried and true. GW2 looks potentially good and beautiful to boot. As some have said, GW2 won't have a monthly fee (one of its biggest selling points in my opinion). Having said that, nothing is better than WoW so far. We'll see.

That makes sense, since I've no interest in MMOs and after watching some GW2 trailers/gameplay videos I kinda started wanting to get into it

#28 Posted by Zithe (1037 posts) - 1 year, 8 months ago

I plan on trying both. I like what I've seen from Guild Wars 2 so far, but I'm also worried because I didn't like the first one at all. I know GW2 seems light-years ahead of the original, and I hope this is the case. SWTOR, for me, will all come down to the responsiveness of the controls. I know I like Star Wars and I know I like World of Warcraft, so the feel of the game is the only question mark here. The level of control I felt I had over my character is the reason I chose to play WoW over all of its competitors. Blizzard really nailed that part.

While I will most likely get Guild Wars 2 later on down the road. The Old Republic is going to be a midnight launch buy for me. Same with Mass Effect 3.

#31 Posted by nrh79 (2713 posts) - 1 year, 8 months ago

@fullmetal5550: You could just pre-order it online and get early access to the game if you didn't know about that. Not a beta entry; it's literally that you get into the game a week or so early (depending on when you pre-ordered it), and you get to keep that character when the game officially launches. You get to keep those levels and such you've earned.

#32 Posted by coakroach (2383 posts) - 1 year, 8 months ago

As with any multiplayer game you're probably better off going where your friends are.

Also TOR will be coming first so unless its complete broken garbage you'll set up your guild and whatnot and not want to move when GW2 comes out.

#33 Posted by Vexxan (4551 posts) - 1 year, 8 months ago

Play the same game as your friends or you'll get bored very quickly.

#34 Posted by Funkydupe (2921 posts) - 1 year, 8 months ago

Its easy to get involved with a guild of other players in most games and that'll improve your experience. It doesn't have to be "enter a game with friends".

#35 Posted by JustKamToo (594 posts) - 1 year, 8 months ago

I'm getting both, so which ever comes out first will be my main focus. But asura mage Vs a Jedi I think the Asura will win.... = P

Huh? Guild Wars has always been about playing with friends and seeing as the GW2 will have no sub cost at all it's more likely more people will play it. The pay 2 play MMO is dead.

#37 Posted by PenguinDust (12093 posts) - 1 year, 8 months ago

I'm going to try both, however if you don't have the time to do that, then I'd suggest focusing on Guild Wars 2. The reason being SWTOR is a subscription MMO. If I have to pay a monthly fee in addition to the original purchase, I want to make damned sure I am getting my money's worth of playtime. If I am limited on time, I'd feel more comfortable knowing that an extra fee isn't being tacked onto my credit card. Paying when I am not playing is silly. I know that grouping with friends is a strong motivator, but I believe that you can find good people to play with online if you are friendly, helpful and patient. Plus, chances are your SWTOR playing friends might come and try GW2 eventually since there is no subscription fee. Besides once the game comes out and the hype is in full, curiosity could compel them as well to give it a shot. I suggest talking it up around them.

Wait for reviews, there is no point deciding before either of the game came out.

#40 Posted by Levio (1399 posts) - 1 year, 8 months ago

GW2 is currently in the "hype" phase of pre-release, while TOR is in the "disillusionment" phase, so you're probably going to get a bunch of GW2 recommendations. Personally, I always recommend a wait-and-see approach.

#41 Posted by Gargantuan (1809 posts) - 1 year, 8 months ago

TOR beta was very boring so I'm gonna buy GW 2

Suggesting that TOR doesn't have a focus on story is just silly. If anything, that is its main innovation.

guild wars son

#44 Posted by WinterSnowblind (7367 posts) - 1 year, 8 months ago

@Meowshi: I was just listing what Guild Wars 2 was doing right, not implying that ToR didn't share some of those qualities. Although I think the story focus is the only thing they have in common.. which is just more reason why I would have prefered it to simply be KotOR 3.

Allods Online is better than WoW in almost every regard (save for lower level cap and less content of course) and it's free. If you haven't played it, I really do recommend it.

They're both vastly different MMORPGs. The lack of a subscription fee means that you can play Guild Wars 2 as casually-guilt-free as you like. I say: get both.

That said, playing an MMO with friends makes the experience vastly superior. So either join your friends in TOR, or prepare an exhaustive powerpoint presentation on why Guild Wars 2 is the superior game--hopefully convincing them to join your cause.

I'll be buying and playing both.

Is "The World of Warcraft" a WoW reboot?

:P

Also, yeah to me getting GW is a no brainer as firstly, I don't want to pay monthly for anything, and secondly, no-one I know (or at least, want to play with) is getting either. So I'm going for the game that looks better.

Guild wars.

But i am a bad person to chime in cause i won't touch TOR republic with my little toe.
