Happy Birthday Giant Bomb!!!

#1 Edited by Nightriff (2903 posts) - 2 months, 13 days ago

Today is the 5th Anniversary of the Official Giant Bombcast and for most of us that is the beginning of time. Soon it will be heading off to Kindergarten so lets remember the first time it walked, talked, cursed, drank nasty energy drinks, played with soundboards, EMAILS!, ER's, QL's, TNT's, Flight Club's, RPCG's, Breaking Brad's, TANG's, etc.

It's a time to remember the past and hopes for the future and GB is now one full year older. HAPPY BIRTHDAY GB!!!!

God Bless Vinny

Still learning to stand, how precious

I'll drink to that, and fall over just like jeff, in honor of Giantbomb's birthday.

#4 Posted by Pr1mus (2443 posts) - 2 months, 13 days ago

I really want to know if Jeff falling was staged or real.

I don't know how I've never seen Jeff's Fall before.

#8 Posted by Ravenlight (7098 posts) - 2 months, 13 days ago

I'll celebrate tonight but I won't remember why.

#9 Posted by Daneian (757 posts) - 2 months, 13 days ago

Was that fall really high or was Jeff just too embarrassed to get back up?

#10 Edited by ThePickle (3536 posts) - 2 months, 13 days ago

^this is that weird livestream that ryan, jeff, and rorie did that one time with the effects. not loading properly. Whatevs.

There was also that 5 hour stream that Jeff and other people did a few years ago where they filmed the TV they were playing SNES games on.

There was also the exhibition SC2 match between Brad and Norm played that Vinny and Ryan commentated and Ryan drank absinthe.

Fuck I love this site.

5 years huh? Yeesh.

#13 Edited by pyromagnestir (2925 posts) - 2 months, 13 days ago

@daneian:

If I recall correctly, that fall was soon followed by a tweeted picture of Jeff's leg busted open. That's probably why he didn't get up right away.

The Bombcast is what roped be into visiting GiantBomb. And the endurance run is what got me into the unbreakable habit of visiting daily.

What a fucking great podcast. I only started tuning in back in late '09, but I've gone back and listened to nearly every week's show. Anyways, I thought in celebration of these great five years, I'd put together my five greatest moments.

5. Jeff Recounts His Miami Experience

4. Internet Dating Pranks and Crazy People

3. A Suge Knight to Remember

2. Ryan Is A Narc

1. Vinny Takes A Collect Call From Drobot

#24 Edited by TooWalrus (11834 posts) - 2 months, 13 days ago

The first of October, 2001. The last moments of my life. Ten years since the exposure of the first Giant Bomb. A lot of things have changed since then.

Wait, nevermind.

#25 Posted by TooWalrus (11834 posts) - 2 months, 13 days ago

@mrfluke: God damn, I still want to know what this music is.

#26 Edited by mrfluke (3187 posts) - 2 months, 13 days ago

@toowalrus: id say you could PM drew and ask him, but i believe that video was made either while drew was an intern, or even before drew joined up.

if i had to guess though, its probably made by either a dude named phil reno ( he did some of the music stuff for giantbomb,) or its part of a royalty free collection that vinny uses

Ah, when the site was merely Smallish Bomb. I recall the day I discovered it... I was chasing a hoop with a stick down the street, 20 ha'pennies in my pocket and a novelty lollipop in my hand, when I saw a man in his Penny-farthing handing out websites. I stopped, staring in awe. This man... he was like no man I had ever seen. Instead of common dress, he wore a black undershirt, as if he were in the privacy of his own home. And, while everybody was racist in those days, this man was just so... casual... about it all.

I stopped him, and he handed me a website as well. I took a look at it, but it was almost too much for my mind to take in. I said to him:

"Mister... what is this?"

"It's a website, son."

"What's it about?"

"It's a website... about VIDEO GAMES."

I was paralyzed with wonder and fear. Unprecedented! My first reaction was to summon a constable, but before I could flag him down, the man laid his hand on my head. Suddenly, as if I were suffering bad humors, my brain was bombarded with images of news, reviews, podcasts, and visual media from the world of video games. I saw the man who was standing before me, as well as three others: a bearded man, a dapper man, and a Gerst man. As a fifth man with unkempt hair began to emerge from the shadows, everything disappeared, and I was back in reality.

"Who were those men, mister?"

"They are 'The Giant Bomb', and they will guide you, should you join our website."

"And that shadowy gentleman?"

"In time, friend. In time."

"What... what's your name?"

"I, son, am Vinny. Vinny Caravella. Now, run home! Run, boy! It's Tuuuuuuesday!"

Although his final words to me were odd, deep down, I knew that I'd be hearing them every week for a long, long time.

---

My hoop, now forgotten, lay at Vinny's foot. He regarded it with passing interest, then tossed it into the grass and winked toward where he perceived a camera to be.

Ah, the good old days. I was in the process of finishing middle school, Gamespot had just lost like half of its veteran editorial staff and I was not horribly jaded and full of hate, because I was still excited about a Super Smash Brothers game. Also, listening to those old, old, old Bombcasts is super weird, because they're all short and Jeff and Ryan don't curse all that much, and sometimes Alex is there too. Oh the places we've been since then. Oh the places we've been. I kinda miss those days when Giant Bomb was a startup in a Sausilito basement instead of a wholly owned subsidiary of CBSi, but it still continues to be... a website... about video games.

And other things.

The Narc episode of the bombcast where they discuss their trip to California Extreme is still probably my favorite. I jumped on board towards the end of 2010 right before the Game of the Year podcasts (Somewhere in November I think). I remember some talk about Assassins Creed Brotherhood. After I heard the all email episode I was hooked, then I fell out after the CBSi move and I started listening again about a month ago.

Wow, I had never seen the Jeff falling video until now!

I´ve been part of this since the Arrow Pointing Down days, but somehow this slipped my attention. Or maybe I´ve just forgotten about this horrible thing.

You can tell it was staged by the sound of Jeff's figure falling upon some beanbag-like devices.

YOU'RE PART OF THE OLD MONEY, JEFF, YOU HEAR ME? YOU BEST LISTEN GOOD 'CAUSE YOUR TIME WILL COME SOON ENOUGH, BUDDY!

I can only dream that this video was shown in the investors meeting where CBSi talked about buying GiantBomb.
