Has Giant Bomb become too big?
I hope I'm wrong on this one.
My fear is that Giant Bomb maybe is on the verge of becoming too big for itself.
Small and independant companies can do what they want. Big companies have corperate responsibility.
"With great power comes great responsibility" "With no power comes no responsibility"
I'm just hoping that money dosen't beat integrity.
this worries me:
- the QLEX with game producers
- more and more trolling in the comments (seems that many fans include many not so well-mannered folks)
Ps. Pardon my spelling - not from english speaking country.
There is nothing wrong with the Whiskey Media company growing and expanding. It's always been part of their plan. No body starts a company with the goal of staying small forever. Don't worry about their integrity, it ain't going anywhere just because some game publishers and designers stop by to show off their games. That's perfectly normal for this type of website.
No.
Because I'm a nice guy:
- QLEXs have been there for a long time and don't come out that often compared to standard QLs anyway
- trolls have always been there and it is inevitable you will notice more as the site grows, mods are pretty good at stepping in when it gets out of hand
- these are not really the things to measure if GB has or has not grown to big and become "corporate"
- this question is asked on a pretty regular basis
If the quality suffers, we move on. These guys do have a responsibility to themselves to maintain quality. A loving, adoring audience isn't a birth right.
I completely get what you're saying, 100%, but I'm pretty sure the guys are aware of these things. You don't succeed at this level with out being savvy. It's up to them to recognize the line, and not cross it. And if they do, people will move on. If you think you have a lot invested in this site as a fan, imagine what they have to deal with.
Its definitely a different animal than it was back in the blog days however i think saying too big is selling it in a wrong direction, there will always be "Trolling" but giantbomb has a firm idea of what it wants to be. your always gonna get what you expect from these few guys, in spite of how many users there are.
If anything, I think it's not yet big enough. I long for the days when GiantBomb becomes large enough to have multiple offices in different areas of the world, hundreds of thousands of employees, it's own private paramilitary forces, etc.
...and then I want them all to go to war.
Edit: With one another. I basically want Risk: Factions, but with the GB crew as the heads of each group.

"srsly? :| No it is not becoming too big...the site is run by 5 dudes who are just as focused on the community now as they were when they began the site. QLEX's have been going for a long time, we only get a handful of them each year, and why on Earth would that be an indicator of the site growing too big?! It would simply show that more devs recognise the influence GB has and the big community following the site has built up. And it's the internet bro, there are trolls on every single messageboard and forum, no matter where you go. Again, how the fuck is that any sort of indicator of the site growing too big? :| I truly cannot understand your logic.
I think you mean is Whiskey Media becoming too big, which includes GB, Anime Vice, Screened, Comic Vine, and Tested. All of which are awesome and do their own thing well. So far the only "big" corporate-style thing I've seen them do is plug Best Buy in one of their quest achievement sets.
If that's a sign of GB getting too big then I'm the Raptor Jesus.
It'll be 'too big' when Jeff, Ryan, Brad, Vinny and Drew are no longer happy with the direction the site is going. Until then its just growing in the direction they like, and anybody who wants to enjoy the content then they should.
" Wasn't the first Quicklook they ever did technically a Quicklook EX? "Tony's right. Brad playing Legendary with the Gamecock dudes was a QLEX before they called it that. first video that used the "Quick Look:" was Your in the Movies. The C&C Hands On also counts as a QLEX before they called it that.
" @Rongaryen: God, this seems like ages ago. I mean . . . who remembers Legendary? "I do. That game was like, super-awesome, right?
Hrm, I can see the actual community getting too big for itself, not necessarily Giant Bomb or it's official content. Already, there is a boatload of community driven content and a lot of active users, some very helpful, but some not very nice. In a year or two I can definitely see the community evolving into a bit more of a hostile environment, yeah.
Don't forget that this is a website founded by a group of dudes who have witnessed first-hand what kind of corporate dickery goes on at the upper echelons of gaming journalism. I'm sure that brand of wrong-doing isn't easily forgotten.

Quoted for truth. Also, by the time the dudes are retiring and passing on the torch, are any of us even going to care anymore? By that time I'll probably be in my forties, and even though I'll still be playing games, I will most likely not be closely following one website (all loljokes aside). Nothing lasts forever, but the crew's integrity will hold for decades, and thats about as long as anything could be expected to last, really.
