Has there ever been a game that drove you to purchase a console?

Fortress of Narzod drove me to buy a Vextrex.

I bought a PS3 to get Valkryia Chronicles, then never got Valkryia Chronicles.

360 for Gears of War. PS3 for Demons's Souls and their endless list of superior exclusives.

The reason I bought most consoles were because of a single game.

For the Nintendo 64 it was Super Mario 64, for the Sega Saturn it was Panzer Dragoon, and for the PlayStation 3 it was LittleBigPlanet.

Oddly I got my PlayStation 2 purely based off the hype of the console in general, the first game I remember playing on that was Extreme-G 3... :p

I will buy a WiiU because of Yoshi Epic Yarn and everything Platinum games puts in that console.

All of my console purchases were initially precipitated by desire to play one or more games specific to that console at the time.

I bought an original Xbox to play Burnout 3: Takedown when it didn't come to the GameCube, which was the only system I had at the time.

I also bought a PSP to play the two Burnout games on it... Sensing a pattern?

In my youth, yeah. Final Fantasy 7 and Halo persuaded me to buy in on the PSOne and Xbox respectively.

Now? Not really.

If I buy a system early in its life, it's because the last iteration brought me lots of enjoyment, and there's no real reason to expect a change for the worse. (PS2/3, Xbox 360)

If I buy a system later on, it's because the library of games amassed since I initially passed up on it is great. (N64)

Yep. I bought an Xbox 360 for Mass Effect, and a Playstation Vita for backwards compatibility, but mostly for P4:G.

I wanted to buy a Xbox 360 because of it's "amazing multiplayer" as my friends said. Then I started to talk to other people and I ended up finding out it's not that much better. Not good enough to buy it when I already have a Ps3. I love the Ps3 exclusive games so far. For some reason the 360 games never struck out at me to try and play them. Then again I don't keep up with what's coming out and what not like a I do with Ps3.

Persona 4 Golden, eventually. When I have money to burn on a damned Vita, at least.

Edit: Better answer, same vein: I bought a PSP for Persona 3. I don't think I've played to completion any other game on that system. I feel kind of bad about that.

I got my Vita for Persona 4 Golden the day it came out. I convinced myself I really wanted to play it. I got about 10 or so hours in and have not touched it since. I have recently been telling myself to upgrade my 3DS to an XL because I know that if I had the bigger screen I would enjoy the 3DS despite having never played the 3DS I have had now for a little over a year. The main game that makes me want to do so is the Fire Emblem game and Pokemon later this year. I just can't justify doing it however as money is tight and deep down I know it will end up like the Vita story above. Plus I'm holding out for a purple 3DSXL as I hate the red/blue they have now. I got my fingers crossed that at this E3 they might drop the price or at least announce a new line of colours. GOD DAM IT NINTENDO MAKE A PURPLE 3DSXL!

no but halo is always a consideration for xbox.

I got an original Xbox the weekend after Halo 2 came out because all I could do was pace in my room thinking of all the fun everyone else seemed to be having.

On the other end of the scale I bought a Vita and 3DS for no reason. I've since found some games that might justify their purchases, but not really. I still wonder why I bought em.

Not as of yet. Well, the first time I actually put some money into upgrading my PC was for Oblivion, so maybe that counts? I am planning on buying a 3DS (not sure which one as I don't know if the XL is worth the extra money) for Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, and I guess Monster Hunter 4 if it is released in NA. I just really want to play Monster Hunter. It's a series that I've always wanted to get into, but I never actually picked up any of the previous entries.

I bought a PS2 to play Onimusha 3. The PS3 to play Fallout 3 and New Vegas. And finally, I bought a 360 to play Gears.

I bought a 3DS for the Ghost Recon game after watching the quick look on here....

I bought a Wii for Smash Bros. Brawl. Not one of my better decisions to be quite honest.

I bought my 360 so I could pick up a lawnmower in Dead Rising and place it on a zombie! I regret nothing! (Well, except for the part where the 360 died the first week, oddly enough not a RROD though, some sort of harddrive failure and I had to do the Zombie Genocider a second time to unlock the megabuster because they couldn't save my saves :( that kind of sucked)

I did really enjoy that game though.

Bought a Xbox 360 for Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion.

Man, those were the days. Gaming felt a lot more exiting back then. Here's hoping a new console generation will bring back some much needed vigor.

Street Fighter 2 for SNES. I just really needed to have that available at home. Smash bros. for N64. I needed that for myself and my college roommates.

PSP - Final Fantasy: Crisis Core. (I sold my PSP shortly after finishing it, too).

PS3 - FFX HD. (Yes, an old game was the final kick in the tush for me to buy a seventh gen console; and I'm still waiting for it. =P).

GBC - Pokemon Yellow; GBA - Pokemon Sapphire/Ruby; DS - Pokemon Diamond/Pearl. (Valuable franchise, eh?).

I bought a PS3 for God of War 3

Gears of War was what made me get an Xbox 360 (the first console I had purchased since the PS2). There wasn't a specific game that convinced me to get a PS3, rather it was the release of the PS3 slim that finally convinced me to buy it.

Probably knowing that Persona 4 Golden was coming out for the Vita pushed me over on buying one.

I remember wanting to buy the original Xbox so badly because of DOA: Xtreme Beach Volleyball. Lol.

Super Smash Bros Melee.

I bought my 360 for Mass Effect/Assassins Creed. I bought my Vita for P4G/FFX. And I bought my 3DS for Fire Emblem Awakening.

I got a Gamecube just to play Metroid Prime. I ended up with a bunch of other stuff on it, too, but even if I hadn't it was worth it just for that one game.

Halo for Xbox. Great times.

My boyfriend bought xbox 360 due to Modern Warfare.

Oh, to update my previous post (PS2 due to GoW 1&2), me and my better half *did* buy PS3 'cause of Guitar Hero (Metallica, to be more specific).

im one of those fools that buys a console on the day of release because its new. and i love that new console smell.

I bought DS lite for Animal Crossing, 3DS for Ocarina of TIme and MGS3 and Vita for Persona 4. Oh, and the old Xbox for Halo 2.

Sure, I bought an Xbox 1 for Ninja Gaiden. Gamecube for Wind Waker and a PS2 for Grand Turismo 3 specifically. The others I just bought for whatever reason, like it was the hot new thing, but I got those 3 consoles so I could play those specific games.

As a huge perfect dark fan, that game was my biggest reason for getting a 360 at launch. Also, I enjoyed it. Don't judge ME.

I actually bought my Wii U because of ZombiU. Sadly, I've yet to continue playing that game, or any game on my Wii U...

But yes, typically first party games are what makes me buy my consoles.

This is actually when I decided to go full on as a console gamer... but unlike you, that computer has long since died xD

Well, GTA4 was the game that caught me to buy a console in this generation. Until then I didn't really feel I was missing out any, as a PC gamer. Of course it was the fact that friends had 360s that ultimately saw me buying that system rather than a PS3.

I bought a WiiU recently, about an hour after hearing that WW was coming to it later. I bought it in anticipation of an old game with some bloom on it. And maybe less Triforce hunting.

MGS4 got me to buy a PS3 which, ironically, I never played while I had the PS3 even though I had the system and game the whole time. I played Future Tools of Destruction, Infamous, and about 2 hours of the Chinese import of Demon Souls and a couple PSN games before I mothballed it and later traded it in. Still have my sealed LE of MGS4 and the hardback LE strategy guide for whenever I get the urge.

I think MGS was originally the game that finally got me to buy a PS1 as well, come to think of it. I've been kicking myself for not getting the Vita deal from Amazon on Black Friday for Persona and Dragon's Crown but I don't know I'd play much else on it.
