Have you ever pirated a game, music, etc.?
I pirate games when I don't have the money to buy them, and NEVER plan on buying them anyways. The vast majority of my game collection is legal.
Also, I get music exclusively by pirating.
Yes I have.
Not many games though. Only if they are old and i cannot find them in shops. And all my music practically.
Never PC or 360 games, except I have downloaded PC games that I owned for Xbox n' such. Other than that, A few movies, but it's rarely worth it. I've been using Napster for like 8 years, so no use torrenting music, really. DS games, however, I freely pirate because the DS is so damn easy to run ROMS on, and DS games are almost never worth buying.
yes... but i try to pay for as much as possible.
Buying:
Games: 97%
Movies: 30%
music: 5%
I'm a student so I can't afford to go buy DVDs and CDs and they help me entertain myself when i'm broke and can't go out :S
Games, unfortunately, quite a few times (I suppose you can call me a hypocrite, as I've become part of the reason PC gaming is starting to lose focus from developers). However, I do make a point of myself that if a game is made by a Russian/Eastern European/Small-time European developer, I will always buy it, since those folks of all people in the business could use that money (as opposed to say, Activision).
Believe it or not, I have never downloaded illegal music. Not because I think that it's morally wrong, I don't even care, I just never did it. I buy all of my music.
Yes, but I actually really really dislike doing it, and if there is a better option to pay for something I will.
I only pirate things when they make it harder for me to get the game legally than it is to pirate. For example, because of iTunes I almost never pirate music, tv shows, or movies because it is SO easy to buy them.
PSN makes it super easy to buy PSP games straight on my PSP, so I also don't pirate PSP games. Steam for PC gaming (when I feel like rebooting into Windows) basically covers me there, so no PC game piracy either.
DS games...well, Nintendo doesn't have a strong digital distribution model for the DS (though they very easily could) so yeah...not everything gets purchased there. If Nintendo made it easier for me to give them money, I would.
Basically, the only things I pirate anymore is some asian music (iTunes doesn't have the best selection there, though it is getting better) which I listen to a LOT of. Importing them is...just too expensive for me. Even when I am living in Japan for part of the year, CDs are upwards of $30 there. Just too much money for me to consider spending on it.
I buy games as much as I can. I've bought all my DS games (don't own a fancy cart) and I buy all recent PC games that I play or if they're available on Steam. However things like PSX games or very old PC games, I pirate because I can't get them easily otherwise.
I try to get everything legitimately but it is getting harder to get music legitimately as I can pirate a song in ten minutes but trying to get it legally requiress finding a store that has it and then signing up and putting my credit card in and then buying the song and it is usually in a lower quality then the pirated one.
" I had an Amiga. It was the only way you could get games for it if I remember correctly. (I think I only ever bought three or four boxed games for it) "Brother.
" NO BECAUSE JESUS WILL HATE ME AND I WILL GO TO HELL "
I suppose you are being sarcastic. But no, Jesus wouldn't mind.
Early Christians believed in holding goods in common, in other words, sharing things.
Downloading copyrighted content is not stealing. Only corporations call it that, because they are always trying to increase their control over everything.
The point is, Jesus is not going to take the side of corporations as they bend the truth and try to maximise profit, nor would he agree with the abstract ownership of ideas and trademarks.
Think of it this way. If the coca-cola company could make it law that every time you said the word 'coke' you owed them ten cents, don't you think they would do that?
Now imagine you say 'coke' and then refuse to pay them ten cents. Are you stealing something now?
If you want to buy something, buy it. If you want to download something, download it. There is no real moral imperative.
Occasionally music that you can't get anywhere, and movies and TV shows, which I then proceed buy on DVD if they're any good cuz I want to support the people who made them
Wow, I made this poll a while back but it was just game and it came up as 20% No. So wow people who dont pirate games, pirate music. If global warming happens who cares everyones a pirate!
You are saying that you have never even once in your entire life ever downloaded a song you liked without paying for it?
You have never shared any music with or taken from your friends?
Movies and games you have to be pretty much deliberately trying to pirate (mostly) so yes there are some people who have never pirated those. But I find it hard to believe that every piece of music/movie/game you have you paid for, especially when it comes to music.
While I currently prefer to pay for all my games I can't say that I'm a saint and have done no wrong.
Never a game and I don't intend to either.
Music? Hell yes. Unless it's an artist I actually like enough to support of course.
I've never pirated anything. I have simply dragged all of my friends music onto my iPod. He probably pirated. He pirates EVERYTHING. Maybe that counts as me doing it? Other than that one instance, I've payed for everything.
Definitely. However, the real question is how many people still pirate, and I can honestly say that I don't. Steam/Zune Pass FTW." whoever says no is blatantly lying "
" @Rhaknar said:" whoever says no is blatantly lying "Most thieves, believe that everyone else is a thief too. I guess I was lucky - I don't have shit for parents, so I was brought up to believe that stealing is wrong. So - No, I've never "pirated" anything. "
Woah dude, that's a little harsh. I don't think people pirating music or games or whatever has any bearing on the persons parents. It's just something that has become accepted as the norm. Downloading music off Limewire or torrents is no longer seen as a crime (to the majority of people), it's just something everybody does. Games and films have a much higher production value, so those pirates are still looked down upon. I'm not suggesting that any one of these are good, but just that some of them are now socially accepted.
I'll download music, and if I like it... I'll buy it. If I don't, I'll delete it. I don't see this as stealing. All of these tracks are just as easily accessed on YouTube, so what difference does it make if I check them out in MP3 form or flash form? Sure I could preview the tracks on iTunes or Amazon... but a song is longer than 30 seconds. Just because I like that 30 seconds, doesn't mean I'm gonna enjoy the track as a whole.
The only games I've downloaded, I've owned previously, and either lost or broken the original disc. Movies I treat the same. I'll download episodes of Dexter because otherwise I'd have to wait a year and a half until those same episodes show up on British television. I know I'm going to buy the DVD when they come out, so again, I don't see this as stealing.
This survey is pointless. That's like asking if you've ever thrown something at something.
Would be much more interesting HOW HARD people are throwing things.
Who wants to know? You a cop? 'Cause you have to tell me if you a cop.
We get this question on the forums from time to time and the answer is always an overwhelming "yes" with the added distinguisher of "not games". This particular question should be refined if done again. This one is too broad and general.
Only for old school games like the SNES and Genesis, I tried downloading a PSX emulator, but I had no luck.
But really, the people on sites like Amazon and Ebay overprice their old games all the time. They're the reason why I got into downloading emulators to begin with.
