" @Azteck: Banners don't waste time, though. 10 seconds each time adds up after a while. The conan and halo banners on the sides aren't nearly as distracting I don't think. "You said you were here since the beginning, how you were here to support the site, and yet when they try to make some money to make this a better place for us, yes, including you, you moan about a 10 second clip?
Here we go...
But Giant Bomb WILL NOT disappear if they don't show game-related pre-roll ads. Once again it's not an either-or situation, even though the less educated in online advertising will fail to realize this. And why ask me for an alternative when I mentioned one earlier on? Just to make a snide remark? Also, since when did observation of a situation and asking a bunch of people for ideas become bitching? Your sarcasm is top notch though, congratulations there, sports fan. because if anything this topic needs it's more sarcasm!" @JakJ said:
" these ads are annoying as hell and there has to be a better way, or better ads, to support the website we both enjoy visiting. "What's more annoying - a couple of 10 second ads you have to endure (I realise your time is probably very precious) or Giant Bomb disappearing? And if there's a better way to do it as you suggest, I'm sure you'll spend a while coming up with an alternative or two instead of bitching about it on the internet, right? Attaboy. "
Thank you for using civil conversation.
Alright, then... educate me. Tell me exactly how Giant Bomb's online advertising policy is implemented. I'm not saying it's their only option either, but it obviously it goes some way to keeping them in business, otherwise why would they bother?" As for the sarcasm tip, I'm sure Jeff really digs the Eidos snipe in your original post. Oh, and chucking in a couple of zingy names while addressing people (ie 'sports fan') doesn't do anything to make you seem like you're working to resolve anything any more than I am. Call that one a draw, huh?
Ok, but you have to understand that they are becoming bigger, and therefore need sponsors etc. Not that many people buy their merchandise, otherwise they wouldn't even need the ads." @Jolly_Lolly: Simply because 1) they said they would not do it and I'm calling them out on it, 2) there are other ways to make money, such as banners in the free space, and 3) I fear (and see) this becoming much more than a simple 10 second add down the road Thank you for using civil conversation. "
Just be thankful we don't have to pay for extra content. If that happens, then it's time to worry. Hopefully this won't turn into an "Animal Farm" esque story.
I believe on the advertise page, it gives info on the types of advertising space Giantbomb is willing to offer. I'm quite certain somewhere on that page, it talks about video advertising.
" @JakJ said:Agreed. This community doesn't need elitist arseholes like him around." @ArbitraryWater: Rank means a fuck of a lot more than post counts. We built this site instead of blabbing away post after post in the forums. Any jackass can post and post, only real GB members add to the site. "Wow. What a tool. "
" Pre-roll advertisements on videos will only appear for users from the USA. Those outside this region will not see pre-roll adverts before videos load. . "Epic fucking win

I just think this thread is getting a little too "serious businessy" is all. Ads are here on vids for Americans. Some people seem allergic to advertising. It's no big deal either way. Right?
I'm one of the lucky ones that doesn't get video ads, so I don't really have an issue. If I did have the ads, I wouldn't have an issue if it stayed as 20 seconds a day, but if it started getting to 10-20 seconds every time a video loaded, THEN I would have some issue with it. I mean, it wouldn't stop me coming to the site by any means, it would just be annoying and I'd rather it wasn't there." @Khann said:

All that said, I can't watch videos or see banner ads anyway. Browsing the net with images turned off and unable to watch videos due to dial-up.... sucks.
*Cheers on Stang and ArbitraryWater*
I really can't understand why you've acted like such an immature brat in the majority of your responses, JakJ, but whatever, you've done an excellent job proving you're not worth having a conversation with.
Regardless, I'll bring this back on topic -- As for ads on the site, I really can't say anything that hasn't been said plenty of times already. I have no problem with GB making revenue off of advertisements. If it keeps the site running, all the power to them! It would be awesome if there was more variety of stuff in the store, but such stores and merchandise don't generate much revenue and more of a service to fans than a way to make money. So unless you want to be stuck paying a membership fee for "exclusive" content or the ablity to browse without ads (a la sites like IGN), 10-second ads occasionally showing up at the start of videos is a very fair price to pay.
I've only seen one ad so far and it was so short I barely noticed it because I was reading comments. It will only be a big deal if they get annoying and out of hand.
" @Khann said:You pretty much hit the nail on the head. Everbody has bad days (or nights, in this case), and puts their foot in their mouth on the internet. As Damian said, this is just a groan. As I tried to explain it's not the ads right now, it's where these ads might go (hence the title of the thread), and thought we should have a discussion about which ads we as users of the site would rather see. Did I phrase it the best way? No, not at all. Should I have kept my mouth shut and just ignored some posts? Duh, of course.
Thanks to all the people who made an honest effort at expressing your views in this thread, sorry I let a few haters get me so far (and embarrassingly) off track. My bad.
Personally, I'd rather see an ad for a game than another Sprite commercial (I'm looking at you Gametrailers!) And, so far I haven't seen any ads here on GB, but I don't mind if they drop them in to the videos. The site is great and deserves to make money so Jeff and Ryan can buy solid gold yachts.
Just thought I'd throw in my two cents.
Giant Bomb, with the help of Quantcast, tracks the demography of this website extensively. As this demographic data is collated, they submit it to advertisers who are looking for specific demographics.
It is very easy to say "Why are they selling me video games? Why not pizza and nachos and beer and tampons?" Well, advertising doesn't grow on trees, you can't just pick and choose the advertisers you want, only those willing to give you money are going to advertise, and right now it seems only to be video game publishers.
If I remember correctly, during a bombcast a little over a year ago, Jeff talked about not necessarily having video game ads on their site, that they'd want to pursue other avenues primarily. Well, unfortunately the advertising market started to dry up as the recession took hold, so at this point one can't be very selective about advertisers, since there is only a limited supply.
JakJ, try as you might to "hold them to their word", their word was dependent on the money of other people, prior to the economic collapse, and so with the changing situation, they've had to change their approach.
Personally, I don't find the current ads annoying because I prefer pre-load video ads to banner ads. I really hate banner ads, especially animated ones. But of course if the ads became more and more frequent, or if they became longer..
On the topic of [which kinds of ads are best]: While we users of GiantBomb could probably receive ads for all sorts of different products, from food to futons, I think the best ads for this site would be ads for videogame products, or computer products. It probably brings up bad memories of other videogame sites though, doesn't it? That whole conflict between ads and coverage/reviews.
But when you're about to watch a website video about a videogame, and you have to watch an advertisement first, I think that a commercial for a videogame is somehow the easiest. Your, um.. (how to say) your brain doesn't have to switch over and then switch back? Sorry if that doesn't make sense.
Ads like this really boggle my mind. I mean, I'm all for the GB guys getting money, but....why the fuck do advertisers think these ads work? Almost everyone who watches them is either not going to give a fuck about whatever is being advertised or is going to be annoyed by the advertisement and refuse to buy the product out of spite. So why do they do it?

Because even showing a glimpse of a product puts it in your head. You could be at a game store thinking "hey the trailer for this game WAS pretty cool, maybe I'll get it". As long as they have you thinking of the game, they won.
