Here's the #1 Handheld Then Folks...
It wouldnt be an Apple conference without over-estimates and exaggerations, but in the conference earlier today Steve Jobs claimed that since the iPod Touch outsold both Sony and Nintendos handheld offerings it could be deemed the no.1 gaming handheld on the market.
Now, I didnt link just to have a good bitch at Jobs, as fun as that is, but do we now regard Apple's product as a viable gaming device? They also revealed the first game to use the Unreal Engine, boasting (somewhat) slick graphics. So does it have the potential to sell on its gaming merits alone? Or will the gaming side always be regarded as a side feature?
Nope.
The iPod has other uses that stand above it's mediocre gaming ability.
Namely, it's a pretty good audio device.
Oh, and it's fucking hip as well. Own one and it's an automatic, Hipster status ACHIEVED!
You don't say. Looks like I'm never buying an iPod!"Own one and it's an automatic, Hipster status ACHIEVED! "
" Hey, if you want 2,814 different Tower Defense games, you want an iPod Touch. "Well shit, fuck the DS! I had no idea what I was missing out on!
My guess is the majority of apple customers didn't buy an Ipod just to play plants vs. zombies.
Sure it can play games, but it ain't no DS.
There's an abundance of racers where you tilt the screen to turn. There's also lots of flight games where you tilt the screen to turn. I've also noticed that they have a fine selection of ball rolling games where you tilt the screen to turn. I bet they also have some more games where you might use screen tilting to execute turning.
THE FUTURE!
Not a gaming device because there are hardly any epic games on there. Can I get one named please? Maybe that chinese GTA. But the reason the DS has a touch screen and works is because game developers figured out how to use it well, also, it has buttons which just helps. Afraid we need to accept buttons may never go away, they are just the fastest and most accurat thing we can use for input.
Naw, it's just a weird Apple thing... I don't get it but having an Apple product automatically makes you a hipster..
It's sorta like being a zombie apparently.
" \@animateria: PlayStation and Xbox are popular, oh dear god are were all hipsters ? "Surely you knew this already? The certificates in the box. Mines now hanging in a gold frame in my dedicated 'hipster room', along with my scarf, a vinyl record and a mink coat.
When they come out with games that go past the 20 min. of fun and put it down, you let me know and I'll start calling my iPod touch a game machine.
Especially since DS and PSP are at the end of their cycles, it sounds like Apple talking about stuff it doesn't know about...gaming...
I wouldn't call it the greatest handheld gaming system ever but I will say that many people severely underestimate the quality of some of these games. In my opinion, if you take the time to sort through the crap, it more then justifies itself as a handheld platform for games.
" Nope. The iPod has other uses that stand above it's mediocre gaming ability. Namely, it's a pretty good audio device. Oh, and it's fucking hip as well. Own one and it's an automatic, Hipster status ACHIEVED! "you sir dont know what hipster is... What hipster go with are portable LP players, and tape recorders... those are hipster
"Apple never wins.
Apple wins again. "
It merely creates the perception of winning through bar charts and turtle necks.
