Just wondering. I've done it once (several months ago) and found it to be surprisingly pleasant. What say y'all?
A long time ago, yeah.
But I forgot what I saw.
Anyway, I never thought of it as weird.
Great way to truly relax and chill.
I...I can't. I just can't. I would feel way to weird.
I don't get this.
Then again maybe this is because I have very little friends
still
I can't really explain why I would. Maybe I'm just really self-conscious or something. But I would just feel...weird. Like I should have people with me but I don't, you know? It's my issue cause I'm just like that I guess. I don't know.
Once. I went around noon on a weekday and there was hardly anyone else there, it was cool but kind of weird at the same time. I would definitely do it again, not having to stand in line for popcorn was sweeeeet.
Yeah, it is weird though if the movie's good it doesn't matter much; you get over it. Had to see the Dark Knight and Revenge of the Sith solo since no one wanted to go quickly (could've waited a few days but meh); enjoyed both experiences though obviously TDK holds up much better than Revenge of the Sith (which is a fantastic action movie if nothing else).
For Wreck-it Ralph. Worth it.
Off-topic: Just watched that movie last night and it was so awesome.
@jasonr86 I thought it would be weird too, like people would be judging me for being alone. But my discomfort was overwhelmed by my desire to watch The Dark Knight (second time) and found it to be quite a pleasant experience.
@peasantabuse: At noon wouldn't be weird at all; just if there's a ton of other people in the theater and you occasionally glance over to see that no one's there and can't gauge their reaction to the film it feels quite vacuous.
I watch movies alone all the time as it is so going to the theater alone is no biggie.
I have a few times. If I have time off from work, I hit up a matinee by myself. I won't be talking to anyone during the movie anyway, so it isn't a big deal. Granted, I got used to going to the movies alone as I wrote reviews for the local paper for a year and a half.

Being friends with midgets is a very noble thing.
Sure, plenty of times. I actually prefer it to going with friends, there's no one nudging you and whispering dumb comments and you can focus on the movie more. It's even better when the theater is almost empty so you can take off your shoes, put your feet up on the seats in front of you and pretty much feel just as comfortable as if you were by yourself your living room, only with a far bigger screen. I try to go to the movies on early weekday afternoons specifically for this reason.

You don't need friends. You have the weirdos here on Giant Bomb. We're your friends. And your family. Forever.
The last time I did it was 2 Fast 2 Furious. I was probably 14 at the time. I'd probably still go to the theatre alone if I ever went to movies anymore. I've only gone once since 2004 though. I don't like movies for the most part.
A couple times. I saw the Hobbit at like midnight, in a near empty theater sometime around Christmas, and I saw Django Unchained in the middle of the day on a 5 dollar ticket Tuesday with only a few old people, some of whom fell asleep during the movie. I tried doing the same to see Skyfall, but at the theater I was told the projector was broken or some such nonsense. It's not really a thing that bothers me, but I just don't feel the need to see a movie in the theater all too often. Watching a movie at home is a far more pleasant experience.
Nope, nevar.
I tend to be a bit of a recluse when I'm by myself.
never have personally, not that i'd be against it. the closest theater is like a 15 minute drive, so if one was closer i'd go more often, i can't be bothered to go if its just me.
most movies i feel like i want to see in the theater theres usually someone i can take with me.
I remember I finally decided to see Titanic in something like it's 18th week playing at the local theater in my hometown. I went by myself. These two teenage girls who'd obviously seen it a dozen times already and were sitting a couple seats over started bawling their eyes out during the opening credits. lol
Yeah. It's not like you're doing anything that requires another human being.

And ever...
I...I can't. I just can't. I would feel way to weird.
Same to me movie theaters are a communal experience you go there to be with friends/family and have a shared experience along with a live audience. If I want to watch a movie alone I'll just wait for a blu-ray or something.
I greatly prefer seeing them with friends, but given the circumstances of where I live, most of the movies I go see are by myself. I think there were all of five people in the town who went and saw The Hobbit, and given my girth, I counted for two of those. Hah!
I don't normally get to go out much, but had free time to myself one week and went to see "The Dark Knight Rises" by myself.
It ended up being unintentionally awkward because it was a few days after the tragic theater shooting and a couple groups of people entering looked over at the guy in the corner wearing a coat and sitting by himself and decided on seats closer to the exit.
I did it once to try it out and really enjoyed it. Since then i've gone a few times. The way i figure, if i really want to see a movie and plans to go see it never materialize no reason to miss it. When i do go alone though i tend to wait till the film has been out a couple weeks.
Never gone to the movies alone oddly enough. I don't hang around many people but I still manage to bring someone with me every time (Usually the same person). I'm not opposed to it though, if there's a movie I really want to see and no one is available I have no issues going alone.
I think going to the theater alone is something that younger-ish people are more likely to feel weird about, but then you grow up and realize if you can even make it to the theater without chaperoning your daughter and her gaggle of friends to see The BabyMakers then a miracle has taken place which involves your wife saying, "Ok honey, I'd love to watch the kids for three hours," so there you are, at noon on a Tuesday, blissfully alone thank you Jesus. Like your friend's schedules are ever gonna line up with yours anyways. Now if you can just stay awake through those interminable trivia questions....
I've gone by my self a couple of times- usually just because I'm interested in movies that my friends aren't... It'd be silly to ask them to sit through, say, Cloud Atlas with me. Actually, I might go Burt Wonderstone tomorrow, as I've got this weird obsession with Jim Carrey and... yeah, it's nothing to be self conscious over.

This.... was great.
On topic, being alone in the theater is great. But there's also something magical about the crowd aspect. As for being alone, I dunno man. Could turn out real bad.
Sire, although I'm not usually one to go to theaters. You see I travel a lot for work, and if a movie that I really can't wait to see (last example was Casino Royale. I'm a huge Bond fan) comes out while I'm away from my friends and no one I'm working with wants to go, I take no shame in going by myself.
