I have a lot more faith in Nintendo than Sonic Team also. Nintendo are masters in the creation of 2D platforming games, they understand well what aspects work in 2D level design.
If in a parallel dimension SEGA were to give it to the Tokyo team, the same team that made both DK Junglebeat and Mario Galaxy, it would certainly be awesome.
