That's the main way.

I imagine they're resting on their own savings until investors come along and click that glorious "advertise" button at the top, at which point they'll be set.

that wont be long, i imagine, given Giantbomb's already huge popularity for such a new site.
#7 Posted by TheBeast (1931 posts) -

They will no doubt be advertising (see the 'Advertise' link on the front page for contacting their advertising guy).
Unfortunately, this is the most acceptable way to monetise a site (short of selling all our e-mail addresses) - but hopefully they'll know how to keep it unobtrusive.

What about Whiskeymedia? Relying on "daddy's money"?

#9 Posted by DaveF (231 posts) -

I heard they had a tree which, when given enough water, grew money.

There is only ONE, and I mean ONE website out there that makes almost 0% profit....

Youtube.com

Google spends $2.1m a day on server fees alone. The only reason they bought youtube was because it was competing against Google Video. Yet they're rich anyways, and they make profit from their search engine. So it doesn't matter to them.

But you need profit, and ad's is one of the only ways.

When you get over 2000 wiki points they send you a seed.

I know that ads are inevitable, but I really hope they are just images and not those annoying flash ads.

YES!

Maybe we should add the money growing tree to objects?
They had one in Sims 2.

I don't know if I'm doing something wrong, but half the time it doesn't give me the option to adblock them. Occasionally there is that little "Block" button in the corner, but it doesn't show up often.

Agreed. As long as they don't pull a Gamespot and remove any reason for us to subscribe, other than the glorius coloured usernames.

This site seems like it will be the Imdb of video games.  The way that site survives is adds.  But I am sure it will be a combo between merch and adds.

There are ad's but they make no profit. Almost none off Youtube.

One days worth of server fees for hosting all of the videos on youtube costs them $ 2 million. PER DAY.

I have to imagine they turn on a profit, simply because they were bought for some ungodly sum (two billion of either dollars of pounds, I don't remember). There are plenty of ads; perhaps those more-than-cover whatever fraction of the $2.1m is youtube.

EDIT: Just checked the wiki. Seems a cited source indicates a $1m per day bandwidth cost, and that it does not, in fact, make a profit.
#30 Posted by xplodedd (1316 posts) -

who knows, they'll make it.

#31 Posted by Pikapichu (66 posts) -

It'll likely be supported by ads. I guess it's something that they're still working on. Or maybe they're hoping that this site will get bought out by and somehow be merged wtih Google. That'd be epic!

#32 Edited by Kimbodja (6 posts) -

Heck don't know how they do it, but they do it good!

While wikipedia isn't always reliable, according to the information there youtube is not profitable. Another fun fact: in 2007 youtube supposedly consumed as much bandwidth as the entire internet in 2000. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Youtube

So it must be true, right? Just kidding :)
#36 Posted by JoblessTerence (349 posts) -

Hopefully they don't have full page ads. Those are just OBNOXIOUS!

#37 Posted by RVonE (4638 posts) -

Yeah, but eventually they will have to create some sort of revenue, right? While they have repeatedly stated that they do not plan to have some sort of subscription model, I would definitely subscribe to this site if it ever gets to that point. How about you guys?

#38 Posted by MasterOfPenguins_Zell (2093 posts) -

They've actually just infected all of our minds in some way and we're all now hypnotised into sending moneyz to a secret PayPal account.

Or adverts.

#42 Posted by Termite (2398 posts) -

Wow youtube doesn't make a profit........

Anyway, I have to assume they have plenty of money to begin with, and that they are just waiting for ads

#43 Posted by KillaMaStA (859 posts) -

On the other hand, I guess Giant Bomb's content doesn't lend itself well to some sort of subscription model.
#49 Posted by get2sammyb (6412 posts) -

I also want to know how this site is going to make money. The Bombers must be pretty in debt by now.

#50 Posted by AltDimension (257 posts) -

Personally I would like to see some kind of extra membership? Like Giant Bomb: Complete? I'd be more than happy to pay for extra features on the site.
