How do you remember users by?

I wish this was a multiple choice poll, since I don't do it just one way.

Avatars. My main gripe with the current scaled mobile site is the lack of avatars in the forums. I get so lost.

Smell

Mostly with the avatar. As long as they don't change it every other week. It was easier with the differently colored name on the old site.

I've been using my current avatar for a good 5-6 years.

Avatars, which makes the mobile site kind of rough.

I remember users that have wronged me in anyway and label them as dead men.

Or I just look at their avatars.

Sex appeal. Thus I only remember @sexytoad because he's the sexiest.

Their opinions on sexism.

I go by their icons. I go by faces in real life and I'm terrible at remembering names.

Avatars first, then names.

My real answer would probably look like that. Although for most users I only remember the name and avatar combination, actually remembering what the users write requires they consistently write something memorable, mostly good memorable, sometimes bad memorable. It throws me a little when users change avatars, but not much.

Well usually by avatars. I'm new here though so I don't know any of you. D:

Avatars. When people change their avatars I usually just think they left the site.

Generally by avatars, but some names stick for certain.

Usually avatars or username. Sometimes by what people write, like that troll guy, if I see "Black OPs 2 is the best game ever" I instantly know who wrote it.

Also, as a user who's almost obsessed with changing my avatar that poll result makes me really sad. : (

People's name is usually what I associate with them, but user image is certainly important.

@cloudenvy: heh. Don't let it discourage you. Your user images usually fall within a range, and your name is pretty identifiable(at least to me). Your posting is also rather consistent. So, as a total package, you're decently memorable no matter what your user image is.

"Their avatar pictures if they change them it confuses me", yep, that's me right there! However, if I ever interact with someone in a meaningful way, I'll make sure to remember their user-name instead.

Mostly Avatar.. but sometimes I'll just remember a person by the username..

There is a way to make polls with multiple choices.

That said, it's a combination of username and avatar. But, mostly username by now.

It's in tiers for me.

• User's I don't remember/recognize.
• User's I only recognize by Avatar.
• User's I recognize by name and Avatar.
• User's I recognize by all that and style of writing, and to some extent understand their mindset.
• User's I give a shit about.

I'm an inveterate lurker, so it's easy for me to recognise avatars and the users behind them.

The kindness in their heart.

I used to use a persons mini bio to remember them so with that gone now I only remember a few usernames.

I definately recognise people most by their avatar, coincidentally I just changed mine.

Street names.

Their avatar and name.

Things kinda works for me as well. I'm not surprised by the results honestly. One of the reasons I kept the same Avatar for so long. Main thing I just like it and can't find a better one.

I recognize OP from their avatar picture. Mechs are fucking awesome. I hate when @animasta changes their profile picture, because I like their opinion and dont really want to miss it. Also the one guy who started the "blame women for rape" thread a few weeks ago. I wont forget his avatar.

I have more than a 5-second memory. Username.

Mostly by avatar, but I also remember usernames of people I enjoy and/or respect. If I don't recognize an avatar, I check the username.

their avatar and post count. usually i just think o i have seen this person around from their post count. a few of them from their name.

Are we talking in like the first .5 seconds of viewing a post? Probably whatever colors are in their avatar, since the brain processes colors faster than shapes or words. After two seconds the name, because we've made this habit of distinguishing ourselves from other people by using the specificity of certain phonemes to mark ourselves as separate individual entities. Otherwise it would be difficult to differentiate this one from that one, or whether they are different whatsoever.

I'm sure a lot of people remember me because I'm the pedant who says annoying things like the above.

I almost exclusively know users by avatars.

The avatar usually is first for me then their user name and what they write.
