Does anyone know when we'll see dx12 cards in stores? My graphics card decided to give up fighting for the cause today, and I'm wondering whether to purchase a dx11 card or wait for dx12 cards to surface. Windows 10 is around the corner with dx12 support and my impression is that it could be a wrong move to buy another dx11 - unless the first dx12 cards are still far away in time. I have no idea. Is someone able to enlighten me on this? Thanks guys.

Since Windows 10 isn't lunching for a few months I'd have to guess the fall for a true DX12 branded card.
I've read that certain current GPUs out there will take advantage as well though.
Radeon 290x and Nvidia 980s for example.

I'm relatively certain I saw an interview with Microsoft folks that mentioned that DX12 wouldn't require new hardware. I'll look it up.

edit: Yep, most features won't require new Hardware.Source

The 290X is definitely DX12 compatible already. I'm building a new rig and made sure to double check that before I went with that card.

This might be my first post not sure.

DX12 will be software based only, and as long as your GPU has an up to date driver (Nvidia/AMD) It'll be able to use DX12. Not sure if it'll be able to use it to the full extenet but will be able to use it.

So as long as your card is still getting driver updates, you'll be more than fine.,

@franstone: @funkydupe: My GTX 660 Ti can run directX 12 right now if I install windows 10. It's not a hardware thing, it's a software thing (mainly).

You'll be fine, and the 970 is a great bang for the buck purchase.

Sounds like DX12 is just a half step to the true next DX.

DXXIII: Lightning Returns.

Yeah sure, that's all good. But does it come with a Glide wrapper?
