I've had this idea for a while and thought I might as well get it started. I'm a games programmer and have enjoyed in the past capturing development as a learning tool for others and it's also fun for me.
So what I would like to do is work on and record, episode by episode, a Giant Bomb themed game with design input and content from the Giant Bomb community. I've recorded the first episode which is mainly just me talking about the concept and starting the very basics of a project while discussing the basics of Unity and programming. My hope for the videos is that besides being a way for the community to keep track of development progress so that design discussions and content production can be done effectively, they're also a learning tool for those interested in getting into game development. So there's a balance I'll need to find between discussing every aspect and keeping things moving along at a good pace and being interesting.
If you're interested in the concept, check out the video where I discuss all of this in more detail, but currently my thoughts on the design of the game is making a management sim similar to games like Game Dev Story where you manage Giant Bomb (or a Giant Bomb analogue) from its incarnation through to where it is now and beyond with the various office/staff changes, major events occurring, etc. I think this style of game would work well with the great style of pixel art the Giant bomb community has produced over the years such as this and allow for plenty of referential humour and nostalgia.
Ideally I'd like to spend an hour or two every couple of days producing the next episode, but ultimately it will probably depend on community involvement. Please let me know if you have any thoughts on the game design, would like to contribute art, music or sound effects, or have any feedback on the concept or video production. As development progresses I plan on creating tools to allow for scenario/mission/data creation and editing by the community so those aspects can be worked on as well if you don't have art/audio to contribute, but would still like to work on the game.
