Victory!  I found a guy on craigslist selling a nearly new XFX Radeon 4890 1gb for only $100.  That's a steal as far as I'm concerned.  I picked it up yesterday, and so far it runs like a champ.  I've put it through its paces pretty well, with probably 6-8 hours of gaming so far on Borderlands, Crysis Warhead, BFBC2, and Company of Heroes.  I can play all except Crysis completely maxed out at 1920x1080 without any lag at all.  A worthy improvement over my 4850.

@Gizmo: Yeah, I considered that.  But knowing that I can sell my current card for probably $60-$70, this is a minimal monetary investment that buys me time until DX11 is fully required by games.  As of right now, with nvidia dragging their feet even getting a DX11 offerering to the door, it seems unlikely to me that we're going to see many DX11-exclusive games any time in the near future.  Heck, there aren't even that many DX10-exclusive games at this point.  I feel safe with the purchase.  At any rate, there certainly is no comparable DX11 card that I could have gotten for only $100.  It wasn't a premeditated upgrade, it was a "holy shit, some guy is selling his 4890 for how much?" purchase.  Big difference :)

I definitely would have been sketched out by someone selling such a nice card for so cheap, but if you say it runs fine, nice find.

For a DX10 card, that's a great deal. He probally sold it to get a DX11 card though. It's still a powerful card.

good find on that. i would be worried about buying something on craiglist. i need to upgrade my computer. i'm using still a pentium 4 at 4.3ghz., nvidia 7900gt 512mb, and DDR2 2gig ram.

i just need a new processor and power supply and i should be great for another couple of years. i've been using the same processor for about 5ish years.

@iam3green: No, the nvidia 7900 is unacceptable by today's standards besides a new cpu. It won't last you five years, if you don't upgrade to a mid range videocard, you don't know what your missing out on.

Yeah, lucky for this guy that it actually works. I would've never ever ever ever ever ever ever ever even looked on Craigslist for a video card. This story makes me cringe lol.

I do a lot of deals on craigslist.  It was really nerve wracking at first, but over time I've learned that most people out there are pretty trustworthy.  I've definitely gotten screwed over a couple times, but thankfully this is not one of them.  I actually didn't realize it until I got to the guy's house, but I sold him my Phenom 9600 about 6 months ago :)

Apparently he was selling this for so cheap because some other guy traded him this 4890 and a GTX260 for one 5770 because he wanted DX11.  I can't imagine ever ever making that trade, what a horrible deal!  I guess it worked out for me though :)
