Borderlands 2's dialogue will make you weep in pain.

On a more serious note, I was looking through my Steam library and Sleeping Dogs was there. Maybe that. I'm not too good at the whole "stuff that makes you cry" thing.

Journey was probably the most emotional I've ever been when holding a controller. I think a big part of that, though, were the particular companions I got, and my state of mind going in.

Oh, and uh, in regards to "warm and fuzzy," Botanicula came to mind. It's not so in the mushy sense, but more of a cutesy, whimsical way.

I figured I'd leave that one for you.

Also I hear tell Nier might be pretty sad.

Without the prior knowledge of their relationship I'm not sure how much weight of that emotion is carried through by just the one game. But if you're into the origin/story between Cortana & Master Chief (The Fall of Reach novel does a good job of setting that up if you're unfamiliar) then I would have to say that Halo 4 can deliver a pretty emotional story through its conclusion.

Dark Souls and Demon's Souls. Both are harsh and unforgiving in both their lore and design.

Pathologic if you want to face hard, sad truths about the human condition

This is a legit recommendation. VaatiVidya's Prepare To Cry series choked me up pretty good more than once.

Also maybe Transistor? It is driven by some incredible music. It's short too.

Well, the stuff you mentioned has all been recent, but no time frame was requested... so here I go.

Games I'll wholeheartedly recommend:

  • weirdly enough, Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs
  • The Cat and the Coup
  • Enslaved: Odyssey to the West
  • Red Dead Redemption
  • Shadow of the Colossus

Games I've not played in a while or which have some caveats:

  • Heavy Rain
  • Kingdom Hearts(cuz fuck the haters)
  • L.A. Noire
  • Okami
  • Silent Hill: Shattered Memories
  • Spec Ops: The Line
  • Superbrothers: Sword and Sworcery EP
  • Tales of Symphonia
  • Thomas Was Alone

Games that I have not yet gotten around to that seem down this line:

  • The Banner Saga
  • Bastion
  • Cart Life
  • Gemini Rue
  • Papo y Yo
  • The Swapper

It's worth noting that some of these are more on the side of "bleak fuckery" tears over "warm and fuzzy" tears. Everything else off the top of my head was either mentioned by you or someone else.

Lost Odyssey ---> Whole game had me bawling. Every 1,000 Year Dream scenario I think at --the least-- got me tearing up. I think this is my "emotion game" fo' sho.

Okami's ending had be bawling.

Transistor had some spots, but the ending definitely got me.

The Darkness 1 (Jenny's stuff)

These games will touch yo' heart. But I'm a sap.

Journey is... an emotional roller coaster, but only if certain things happen. I think it's lessened if they do not. But ya, Journey is amazing.

The Darkness. Jenny getting killed is such a shocking and tear-jerking moment.

Also, I don't know if it will make you cry or not, but Sleeping Dogs is a fantastic story-driven open world game, with very professional voice acting.

@slunks: This. Those 1,000 year Dream scenarios are incredibly well-written and translated. I only wish the rest of the game's story had had that level of emotional resonance and maturity. The Darkness can get pretty moving too, as others have pointed out. I'd also suggest Earthbound/Mother 2 & Mother 3 (the fan translation of which is amazingly professional), and despite their reputation of being thoroughly hilarious, can also get pretty dark and emotionally arresting.

It didn't make me cry, but there is some emotion to that game that I didn't at all expect. Pretty serious subject matter for such a beautiful game. Well worth finishing, though.

As far as the topic goes, I'd recommend Prince of Persia 2008.

You should use the spoiler thing to block your spoiler there.

I'm not one that has a big problem with spoilers, but in the context of this thread it's kind of a jerk move to give away a moment to a game that is the reason people say you should play if you haven't for a specific story arc moment with an emotional impact.

To be fair there are other reasons to play that game (it's legitimately a decent, if not great, game), but that isn't the point of this thread.

Valiant Hearts. The ending is absolutely fantastic and got me all teared up.

I laughed out loud at most of Brothers' attempts at emotion tbh.

Bastion. Seriously, go play Bastion.

Dark Souls also has some of the more heart wrenching stories, but you have to dig for them. Which, in my opinion, makes them even more effective.

I love that more people are actively looking for this. Being on the end of "high sensitive introvert" makes me easily tear up, but I also love the fact that stories in games has that ability. That being said, most of the games that actually do make me feel enough for that to happen does it in a way only a video game can. In being interactive. Bastion has a wonderful story, but the parts that got to me are a few parts where you have to do something interactive. The same in Red Dead Redemption, the same in The Walking Dead. And especially Journey. The whole act of playing that is beautiful, but make sure you are alone and undisturbed for a few hours. It benefits greatly from being beaten in one sitting. And be online, you don't want to journey alone.

Oh, and as @rotnac said, if you read the four or so first Halo books, you will most likely view the games, Master Chief and Cortana in a different light. Don't listen to the people who say reading Halo books are for dorks, the first books (only read four) are actually good. And his comment makes me regret I haven't played Halo 4 yet...

You've almost certainly already played it, having already listed the main game, but the Left Behind DLC for TLoU is even more powerful than the full game itself. Just dripping in emotion.

Echoing the suggestions for Journey, which you must play in a single session (2.5 hours, tops) and with an internet connection. If you don't know the game well, go in blind. Just trust us on this, let it surprise you.

Valiant Hearts: The Great War has a real tug on the heartstrings. One of the best games of the year so far, utterly recommended.

Finally, I'm going to suggest you play Remember Me. But, you MUST play it with the original French audio. The English dub kills that game, and I swear the tepid reviews are mostly due to the poor translation. The story is about loss, and regret, and a dystopia caused not by villainy but good intentions gone awry. It's one of my top ten games of all time, but the subtlety and magic are only present with the original voice work. Played it twice in a single week, was dangerously close to bawling like a baby at the end. I know loss, I know regret, and I understand exactly what they were going for.

NIER, in addition to being criminally underplayed, is one of the most depressing games I have ever played. The music is one of, if not the, greatest video game soundtrack I have ever heard and if you're a sucker for strong Father-Daughter relationships then you'll be in tears multiple times.

Kentucky Route Zero is probably one of the best-written video-games i've ever played, and that really comes through with how it handles the player's emotions. Those heartfelt and bittersweet moments REALLY sneak up on you.

Transistor got me with that end song.

MGS3 had me almost cry, again with the end song.

Bioshock Infinite: Burial at Sea is raw as hell and will probably make you bawl.

Shadow of the Colossus is depressing as hell but didn't make me cry (also the best game of all time).

Was gonna recommend that, it gets pretty interesting especially towards the end.

Also, maybe the Witcher 1. Doesn't make you cry but... Has a really great story. You might cry cause you finished the game.
