I didn't mind things like getting opened "new" copies of games and some outrageous pre-ordering offers for actual games but this video below by GameStop is making me scratch my head in confuzion.

Aside from the almost unhumurous in-game hook, why is there an offer to pre-order downloadable content? Guessing that everyone can download the DLC on the same day, what makes GameStop better to get it? Is it because of the flaming helmet for the avatar? I guess this is a test if they can make a profit out of reserving DLC. But if they would want to succeed, they should try something than having some kind of novelty that some people wont care about. It really seems fucking weird and I am still wrapping around this idea by GameStop.

Are we gonna see more of this in the future?

There are plenty of reasons to hate GameStop, but these pre-order bonuses are only partly their fault.  You can't forget about the publishers who sign off on them.

Too true, they are in fault as well. I hope Microsoft's plan fails because it seems like a bad idea at the start.

Gamestop caters to people of all walks of life.  You have to remember that most people don't go to sites like this, especially those who are buying games as gifts or are being dragged their by their kids to get an M-rated game.  Most GameStop customers know little about anything regarding games and special items and DLC.

It seems weird to me that you're bothered by them asking people to pre-order DLC but not by selling you opened games as new.

Well now that GameStop is the only retailer where you can get Xbox 360 redeemable codes, whether it be for DLC or XBLA games (yeah, they signed a deal with Microsoft, which means you can't get them off Amazon anymore), they're going to be pimping their pre-order bonuses for everything. I'm not surprised they want to capitalize on digital downloads since it is a place they haven't had any presence in so far.

That being said, I think GameStop experiences are really different from store to store. The people at mine never give me "new" opened games and are usually really cool guys and gals.

In my local (read: Spanish) GameStop (which is the same brand and everything, only here in Spain), at least the new copies are sealed. I bought an used Assassin's Creed that I couldn't install in my Xbox because it was scratched, so I went and tried to get a new copy. They didn't have any left, so I turned it into store credit and paid the difference (€15) to get a new, sealed Assassin's Creed II. Can't say Game (a British chain) does the same...

I worked at a Gamestop for all of three days a few years ago. I quit when I found out what asshole policies the place had. Every employee was searched at the end of the shift to make sure they weren't stealing shit. You have to make game and pre-order sales, but don't get any commission. You just get to keep your job. Spending forever alphabetizing the used games was great too because it looked like none of the lazy asses had done it in a year. It was also a real delight dealing with kids that brought stacks of games and consoles that you know they had just stolen. Yeah, screw that place.

The pre-order sales thing is true for the replacement plans at Best Buy AND the credit card applications at Sears. You don't make anything off the sale of those things, but you definitely lose your job if you don't sell enough, which I found out the hard way, and it's total bullshit.

dude, im sorry but none of that sounds bad. Its your job and they pay you hourly to do it. You dont get commission for something that is basically your entire job. You usually get commission if its only a small part of the job. Try working at the insurance company i work at. We have to call random people out the phone book and ask then if they want a quote. Someone has to alphabetize the games as well. Thats what they pay you for. And you dont know if they had stolen those games and consoles, but even if they did it's nto your concern. You are not going to get far in life if you think that is a horrible job compared to most the jobs out there.

I hate going to Gamestop (EB Games) because I feel bad for the guys working when they try to foist some crappy throw-in I don't need.  It's everything people hate about salesmen, but they don't get commission.  And then I have to be present while the 'normal people' ask them the stupidest fucking questions in the world and give them a hard time over the trade in value of Barbie Horse Adventures.  I pretty much go to Best Buy for anything new.  Also, because if I buy a game without a used sticker on it, and it doesn't come in wrapping, I tell them to take it back.  And I feel terrible for that, too, because it's just another jacked confrontation their job forces them to deal with.

@tunaburn: Your job sounds shitty too, but the fact that there are other shitty jobs does not reduce the shittiness of a specific job.  Don't be foolish.  My job is shitty, I won't be told it's not, and I won't tell other people there's isn't.

Not really since Gamestop was the first store to start them. Then other retailers started to complain so the  publishers had to cave and give everyone something or they wouldn't carry their goods.

Why does it hurt you so bad that someone is selling a product? Just relax, man. Don't buy it if you don't want it, don't visit Gamestop if you don't like them, and just relax.  I swear, your life will be better.

Who the fuck buys porno mags these days? Anyways reasons like this are why I never go to Gamestop. At Best Buy I get my shit, pay for it, get points, and get the fuck out of there. No one asks me to pre-order or get the strategy guide at Best Buy so I love it. Haven't been to Gamestop in about 8 months, only reason I went was to get Lego Rock Band for $10.

I can't really say if all of that is true or not, but either way, I think it's an oversimplification.  Were it true, why wouldn't every retailer have their own pre-order bonus for every game?  If retailers were threatening to not buy the publishers' games before when GameStop was the only one getting the bonuses, why not now when GameStop is the only one getting a bonus?

I wasn't able to get hired to begin with;  I tried to apply at a game store years ago when there was a "Now Hiring" sign up, but the manager told me (in a hushed voice) that I can fill out the application but they were only hiring to fill their racial and gender quotas, as required by law.

Because this is the first time a retailer has given  out a pre-order bonus for a DLC. If it's a success, you can bet your ass that other retailers will follow. IF this cycle continues 5 years from now we'll be getting pre-order bonuses for pre-order bonuses...

So this is ok because they are taking advantage of people's ignorance? Or are you saying that they provide the service of information top the lay-audience...because it seems to me that the information that GameStop provides might be a LITTLE bit biased...

Did my opened and clean copy of Super Street Fighter IV not work? Nope. Maybe I will have a case of a game unable to run but I can just request an actual new copy as replacement.

At the time of making the thread, I was cranky and I apologize if it was a bit much. Excuse aside, this method seems very unconventionally odd. Benefit for the publisher, shop, and owner (if they really want the avatar item) I guess (especially when everyone will get the DLC the same day) but I fear a bit of it spreading beyond GameStop and still feature minor bonuses. Well after thinking about it, it's a first and lets see what happens down the line. I still like my local GameStop.

It makes a good gift for mom and dad to buy for their kid, and? It helps get Arcade titles out in the public that might not get any kind of advertising. I'm a huge fan of any promoting of downloadable games/content.

I smell BS in the air, no Manager in his right mind would say that to anyone and risk a lawsuit for racial/gender discrimination and anyone that has ever worked in a Retail position knows this, managers are just as insecure on their jobs as you are, for every position there's 10 people waiting to take it and unless they are out of their minds or trying really hard to get fired a manager would never publicly say that to anyone, seriously I wish people stopped trying so hard to further divide humanity with made up garbage such as this.

Gamestop isn't stupid. They know as well as anybody that digital distribution is going to be the future of video games. So, they are trying to future proof themselves against such an eventuality. Spending millions on Kongregate and trying to start up their own Facebook games like Gangsta Zombies are a couple examples. The Noble Six map pack isn't even actually a pre-order. You're pre-paying for the entirety of the pack and they are going to send you the codes to your PowerUp account page. Which coincidentally means you have to have a PowerUp card and account. Synergy.

P.S. For full disclosure I'm a Gamestop ASM. I could tell you some amazing stories of corporate stupidity but I enjoy getting paid.
