If all media (cd's, movies, games ext.) was digitally distributed do you think you'd shit your pants the first time you received a physical retail copy of a game? I think I would lol. The beautiful plastic wrap waiting to be pealed off, the smooth look of the shiny case, the wonderful sent of the ten page manual. I love downloading games, but I also like having a physcal copy of the games I trully love, ya know?
If Everything was always digitally distributed do you think. . .
I love digital downloads, like games off of Steam, XBLA, PSN. Ect. But I much prefer having a physical copy of the game, and getting LCE's and stuff.
For me it's a question of space...hard drive space. I don't like the idea of always having to worry if I have enough space on my HDD to receive the song, movie or game I am purchasing. Even if I stack games up from the floor to the ceiling, I'm going to find room for something I buy, but that's not always true for downloaded entertainment. Instead of walls of games and DVDs, I'll wind up with stacks of hard drives that I have to keep switching around to see what I am looking for. Right now I am in market for another new external hard drive because I've filled two up and need more space. Perhaps a future "cloud" storage alternative will work one day, although I'm not sure how comfortable I'd be with the idea of renting virtual space for digital entertainment I don't own. Either way, I still maintain that the American broadband infrastructure isn't prepared for a complete switch to digital distribution.
"Why does it really matter? As long as you get to use it, whats the problem?"
Reliability and perception. When you purchase and download a digital game, there is no perception of ownership (yes, yes, no need to bring up that I don't really own the game), but with a physical media you feel as though you own something. Not to mention, it's much easier to resell physical media. Also, with digital distribution what happens when you want to play that game 5-10 years from now? What happens if the authentication service goes down?
I would probably buy more digital content if I could just download an ISO image of the game so I could burn off a backup copy for myself. Plus, there's also the collector's aspect; I like having a collection of games, keeping titles that have been noteable for me over the years.
