Introducing(?): The Golden Duder, TCG

I made this post to gauge interest in a new game I'm currently working on, The Golden Duder. It's a trading card game revolving around the central concept of "Duder vs. Duder" brought forth by Winternet's Golden Duder Awards. (And yes, I asked for his go-ahead before using the name/concept.)

Here's a quick prototype teaser I mocked up the other night, but keep in mind that pretty much nothing is set in stone.

I've started working on cementing a game structure, mocking up some cards, and rudimentary prototypes. Obviously, this is a very large project; I don't want to commit to devoting huge chunks of my time developing it unless there's some actual interest from the community. It's planned to be browser-based and completely non-commercial (free). If the demand is there, I'll perhaps start a dev blog here on Giant Bomb and get to work on it. I'll note once again that everything, as seen on that promo, is subject to change, ranging from the card art to the game mechanics themselves.

So, do you guys have any interest for this kind of game?

Giant Bomb top trumps would be sick.

Only if there are power ups like Personas, Mech Warriors, and You.

@AlexW00d: The game design, as it stands, isn't really based on the Top Trumps model, although there are some similarities. It's more of a game about customizing a deck to your play-style, and reading your opponent, based on the information given to you.

@Dagbiker: There absolutely will be "support" cards (in the form of GB memes, quotes, and such). These include such cards as "#e3mysteries", "NEVER.", "Nothing stops the Endurance Run", etc.

@Gaff: The current model is not based on the Magic The Gathering system of "tapping", although there are aspects of MTG included as well. I'll probably elaborate further on the game flow a little later on.

Sounds good. If you want I wouldn't mind helping making/designing cards if you want to split some of the workload?

Cool idea. The Persona 3 and 4 styling in your mockup is a little blatant though.

Horse Meet Rider, Rider Meet Horse card has to be an insta-win against the Ryan card.

Edit: And it buffs the Jeff card.

For now, at least, I'm probably going to keep it as a solo endeavor. I might perhaps consider taking on more people once the game reaches an alpha or early-beta state, however.

Rest assured, by "meme" I don't mean Annoying Facebook Girl or anything of that sort, but rather the memorable moments that Giant Bomb has offered in the past, such as "And That was E3". If you're not interested in that kind of thing, that's fine, but just know that the game will not rest solely on the laurels of "remember that one time?"; the core tenants and mechanics of the game will be solid.

It's intentional, mainly just as a bit of an inside joke. The P4 Endurance Run obviously played a significant role in GB's early content, and, as luck would have it, the newest P4 release is called "Persona 4 The Golden". The style of the promo isn't me just trying to pull a fast one on you.

It would actually be really cool if the staff would integrate this and you got cards like achievements or something and had an entire deck in your profile that others could view.

While I agree that site integration could be interesting, I'm pretty safe in my assumption that it won't happen. Not only is this an unofficial project, but there would be a lot of cross-domain database'ing going on and other such issues.

In the works! Also, I'm planning for ways to include community content somehow, so that you guys have a say in which cards you want to see.

That's a core tenant of this whole project; I want it to be more than just a quick joke. I'm iterating and tweaking different game designs to make sure it's always engaging, but also accessible.

I don't want it to be a "play-once-ignore-forever" kind of game, and I also want the base mechanics/rules to be simple (but with great depth in both strategy and metagame).

I offer my services to help with any design stuff you need. I loved Dave's Whiskey Media trading cards. Some community ones would be cool.

While I'm well versed in the MTG use of the word, I think you misunderstand my use of the word "tapping". If you know what I mean.

I say go even further and have diferent types of a single duder based on some of their quotes and/or style. For example, have two Brad cards, one focusing on his sorta-kinda stoicness and other on him being good at Cards Against Hummanity.

I'm most likely gonna do the brunt of the work by myself for now, at least until it reaches a playable state. I'll reevaluate at that time whether or not more hands are needed. But yeah, expect community stuff for this later down the line.

You kind of hit the nail on the head -- at least for the current working design. While I'll elaborate more a little bit later, the core concept is that you build a deck around a certain duder (e.g. Brad Muir, Adam Boyes, etc.) and the different "duder" cards (such as the cards seen on the promo) serve as their various "attacks". It'll probably make more sense after I write a blog post detailing how all that stuff works, although it's important to keep in mind that pretty much everything's up in the air for now.
