With the announcement of Machine For Pigs being delayed till 2013, along with like every single game worth a damn, the question is in the title of this topic.

Man it sure as hell sounds like it!

Probably not. Didn't we already live through 2007?

#8 Posted by mtcantor (947 posts) -

I have high hopes for 2019.

#9 Posted by Cheesebob (1235 posts) -

South Park: The Game

Bioshock Infinite

Machine For Pigs

Metal Gear Revengance

Tomb Raider

Alien: Colonial Marines

Injustice: God Among Men

Splinter Cell: Black List

Watch Dogs

Some serious AAA games coming out then (with exceptions). It sounds ridiculous!

#10 Posted by Jazzycola (662 posts) -

I'm pretty sure that's what everyone says for the upcoming year. Can't blame people for being optimistic.

#11 Posted by HadesTimes (804 posts) -

It will probably be one of the last years for tons of AAA stuff for a while. With the new consoles everyone will be adjusting to new hardware. But then, if Sony is serious about not launching a new console next year. Maybe 2014 will be good too. LOL! Too many unknowns. I wouldn't get my hopes up. Just think about how excited we were for 2012. Not that I'm complaining. But it hasn't been a HUGE year for games yet. Just a descent one.

#12 Posted by believer258 (11785 posts) -

It won't beat 1998.

But it looks pretty good.

If GTA5 comes out next year then yes for me.

Last of Us

Beyond: Two Souls

#15 Posted by Cheesebob (1235 posts) -

@GS_Dan: Well damn. That is one insane year

#16 Posted by Zenogiasu (192 posts) -

1998 is still the pinnacle for me, with 2004 in a solid second place.

2013 looks great, but I don't think it'll be the best. Kudos to it for having some exciting new IPs, though: Beyond: Two Souls, The Last of Us, and Watch Dogs to name a few.

#17 Posted by MayorFeedback (674 posts) -

Sounds like something worth discussing in 2014.

#18 Posted by Nonapod (126 posts) -

It'd take a lot to top '98. I mean Zelda OoT, Metal Gear Solid, Half Life, Starcraft, Resident Evil 2? These are all games that went on to practically define gaming for the subsequent decade. I'm sure they'll be other great years for gaming in the future but it's unlikely that we'll see such a confluence of hugely important games within a 12 month period again.

#19 Posted by Sooty (8082 posts) -

Greatest year for gaming was when Xbox Live came out because going backwards around the track on that MotoGP demo was godlike.

I feel good about 2016 if we don't die.

You all are forgetting about Total War Rome II. As for 2013 for gaming, I don't think it will be the best year, but a damn good one for sure!
#22 Posted by TehFlan (1944 posts) -

I'm actually not real excited about most of the games listed. Is that weird?

#23 Posted by Raven10 (1764 posts) -

I started this exact same thread a couple weeks ago and got the same response and looking back on it I agree. There are a lot of great looking games coming out but it would require all of them being massive hits to beat years like 1998, 2004, and 2007. To compare it to 2007 since they are both current gen, in 2007 we had Bioshock, Crysis, Assassin's Creed, Call of Duty 4, Halo 3, and Uncharted just to name some off the top of my head. Virtually all of those games went on to define the current generation. It will be hard to achieve equal success at the end of a console cycle. If both next gen consoles launch next year and there are some great new IP like Watch Dogs that launch with them then I could see it. But the only company pushing big new IP next year is Sony. I could see it being the best year for PS3 with a new God of War, Beyond, The Last of Us, and possibly The Last Guardian all coming out, but maybe not the best year for games in general.

#24 Posted by Guided_By_Tigers (8061 posts) -

Weren't people saying the same thing about last year?

#25 Edited by BraveToaster (12590 posts) -

Nope. It's just another year where people raise their expectations and have those hopes crash and burn. There will be good games, but not enough to call it the greatest year of gaming.

Sounds about right. People keep pushing the hype train to go faster and faster but then it ends up crashing and burning even harder than before.

I am looking forward to nothing next year except for GTA V if that comes out next year.

I'm just going to say this now. Ya'll folks are crazy if you actually think Watchdogs is coming out in 2013.

#29 Posted by BaneFireLord (2920 posts) -

Is Elder Scrolls VI coming out? Is Fallout 4 coming out?

No, they probably aren't. Unless that changes, 2013 is not going to be the greatest year for gaming ever.

#30 Posted by eroticfishcake (7783 posts) -

1999-2001 were my favourite years for gaming. Personally, 2013 looks more like games-that-are-trying-to-be-movies year. Not necessarily a bad thing but nothing in particular looks super innovative.

#31 Posted by Phatmac (5725 posts) -

1998.

Why? I'm not sure one way or another. Ubi said they have been working on it for 2+ years at E3, this would be a huge PS4/720 launch game.

#33 Posted by ShadowKnight508 (659 posts) -

It will not outdo the epicness of 1998, but it should be another solid year for games.

#34 Posted by mtcantor (947 posts) -

@ez123: It would be, but considering we don't know exactly when those systems will launch, and the fact that Watchdogs (at least as they presented it) is in NO way a current gen game, I don't buy it for 2013. It has 2014 written all over it.

#35 Posted by xyzygy (9943 posts) -

I think the early 2000's were the best. Truly unique games were coming out on all three platforms.

#36 Posted by Getz (2996 posts) -

I'm gonna go ahead and say no

#37 Posted by ez123 (1956 posts) -

@mtcantor: You're not sure that the Sony/MS systems are coming out holiday 2013 but you are sure Watch Dogs won't come out 2013? The former is the one that seems pretty obvious.

Also, that could totally be current gen. It's just that the console version won't look nearly that good, like any other game also on PC.

Keep on dreamin' you crazy dreamer. Quote me if you want, I'm sure you don't actually care that much.

Watchdogs will NOT be a current gen game. No way no how. At the earliest I would expect it in early 2014.

#39 Posted by pweidman (2322 posts) -

And how dare you cross out Watchdogs.

Didn't we just have this conversation?

2013 - Best Year In Gaming History? ~ Raven10 on June 14, 2012

As I said before, history will judge each year in gaming after it's over. Who of us in 1997 said, "1998 is going to be the best year in video gaming ever!"?

#43 Edited by VaddixBell (243 posts) -

We've been saying this for a long time, but I think this has to be the year when these finally get released:

Final Fantasy Versus XIII

The Last Guardian

Not saying any of these will be great, but it's just they've been in development for far too long.

every new year is the best year for games simply because you can play all the greatest games that already came out AND the new stuff.

#49 Posted by stryker1121 (1400 posts) -

Very excited about BioShock and am interested to see if Tom Raider delivers. Don't think you'll see Watch Dogs next year, though.

#50 Posted by Pinworm45 (4088 posts) -

Probably not. I'm of the opinion that games are overall either getting worse or stagnating.
