Is my G500 mouse defective?

#1 Posted by Lobster_Ear (271 posts) - 1 year, 1 month ago

I just bought this mouse and to scroll through web pages I usually just click the middle mouse wheel in and move the mouse up or down. The problem with this mouse is 50% of the time the click is unresponsive. Not when I use it to open tabs or other single click processes, but to scroll on pages. The weird thing is it works fine with firefox, but it's random when using chrome and IE. The wheel also doesn't feel very "clicky" on the right side, only the left so in order to use the middle click I need to click the left side of the wheel or it's even more unresponsive.

Another issue that just started is the DPI control on the mouse. I can only raise the dpi and once its reached level 5 I cant go back down. This problem just randomly started yesterday. I don't know if its a program problem or a defect in the mouse itself.

Does anyone here with a G500 have these issues? Should I just exchange it or are they all like this?

I have a 500, the middle mouse click feels responsive and satisfying on any side of it, and it always responds and works in chrome (to scroll manually) except for when I have the mouse in the posting field that I'm typing this post in right now (in this case the scrolling circle doesn't initiate). So yes your mouse wheel sounds defective.

Don't understand the DPI button issue, care to elaborate?

Sure. The buttons that control the dpi usually let you lower or raise the dpi setting at will and it shows its current level on the mouse. Mine will only let me raise it even if I press the negative key so it gets stuck at the highest setting unless I stop, but I can never go back to the lower settings without opening setpoint and reapplying my dpi settings.

Well I just exchanged it for a new one and at first it was fine but now it's doing the exact same thing again. This mouse is a piece of shit. I'm going back and asking for a refund.

Sounds like some sort of strange driver conflict on your end, if it happened with a new mouse, too. Not to mention the middle mouse button having problems in certain programs but not others. I've used the G500 and owned the G700 for a long time now and never experienced those problems. When you went into SetPoint, did you check the functions assigned to the increase and decrease DPI buttons on your current profile to make sure they didn't get set to the same function somehow?

If I did screw up the dpi settings in setpoint it was an accident and maybe when I plugged in the new mouse it reset everything to default because it's normal now, but as far as the middle mouse button I thought that as well since it's fine in firefox but the button itself feels flimsy on the right and sturdy on the left like the first one. Clicking on the right causes the unresponsiveness. This makes me think it's a defect in the mouse itself. I've had no luck with Logitech mice and this will be the last one I ever buy. I'm going to ask for a refund and maybe get a razor.

Good luck finding a razer. The Deathadder and Naga are rapidly selling out everywhere I look, even in a lot of Online shops.

Are they about to refresh their line?

Totally normal.

What, you think that all the buttons should be responsive? Don't be ridiculous.

Normal. Makes using your mouse more exciting if you don't know how it is going to act.

Please let me know if you have any other tech support needs.

@Lobster_Ear:  Sorry I didn't reply to you in time, I didn't get a notification. When you reply to someone, either quote them or hit the "reply" link by hovering your mouse over the bottom right side of their post, so they get notified.

Not only is @JP_Russell: onto something by suspecting driver/setting issues, but you sound like you really hate the mouse and the brand. I doubt you're gonna enjoy it since you insist that the mouse is defective, so my advice is to get a refund and buy a razer.
Be aware though, razer mice are notorious for getting broken. Razer creates the cooler stuff, Logitech creates the better stuff.

I had a terrible experience with a Razer Deathadder. It was frequently shorting out my motherboard which caused all USB devices to flicker on and off whenever I moved my mouse around. The mouse would also send random scroll wheel signals to the operating system which caused my apps/games to go crazy (especially in games that map weapon switching to the scroll wheel).

Razer is shit, don't get it.

Your problem is your drivers. Go to your Setpoint settings and change the bind for whatever key you are raising/lowering your DPI and set it to "loop" instead. Something must have gotten unbound for some reason. The fact that it does it on both mice prove that's what the problem is.

My DPI is fine now. How can a loose mouse wheel that doesn't click well on one side but does on the other be a driver problem? I only dislike the brand because of my experiences with their mice. The mouse I had before the G500 was a Logitech too. It crapped out on me, so I got this mouse and you know the story from there. I can only judge a brand based on my experience with it and my experiences with their mice haven't been good.

There were one or two Deathadders at the Best Buy I bought my G500 at, but if the Razors are shit then I don't know what to do.

My bad, I thought you said your mouse-wheel click problem was resolved with the second mouse. I mean, I have a G500 and it's perfect. Maybe the shipment to where you got it was damaged some how? I don't know.

For what it's worth, I've always had Logitech, they've always been amazing, and when I had to get a new mouse recently, I got a DeathAdder and it was so shit that I took it back just because of how bad it was, and got a G500 instead. Couldn't be happier.

I can understand where you're coming from if you've had two consecutive bad experiences with them but I dunno. Maybe get a full refund and try somewhere else. Or just get another brand. But I don't recommend Razer. Get Microsoft instead

Last time I checked, the Microsoft Sidewinder series of gaming mice are actually good, but I thought they stopped producing them?

I have the same mouse and it works great. If you are tired of messing with SetPoint and drives and stuff, I would also recommend the R.A.T mouse from Madcatz. I have a friends that enjoys them and Norm from tested.com likes it too. The cheaper ones are only $60

I have another friend who enjoys his Razor mouse too, He had it for a long time and never had any problems.

Well I just kind of fixed it. The problem was the mouse wheel is offset so clicking on it in certain spots triggers left scroll or right scroll which causes the middle button click to become unresponsive, so I went in setpoint and changed left and right scroll to "do nothing" and that seemed to fix it.

I still don't know if I'm going to return it or not. The mouse wheel still doesn't feel "right" but I never used left or right scroll anyways so I don't know...
