Just gonna say it... Mount and Blade > Dark Souls 2

I've played Mount and Blade Warband on and off for a few years now and it has to be not only the best online experience of what it offers, but also the best melee combat in a game ever. It is directional, you have full control over your character, it feels as one to one you can get from current controls. I love being able to put my shield up and face the right way to defend, I love being able to swing from any direction to try and avoid their defence, I love being able to put my shield up and avoid arrows. It is so good, so precise and just feels very tight...

Dark Souls 2 however just feels very slow, very clunky, the animations take all year to complete, the A.I is poor and the character moves slightly independently from the camera, this ends up making it feel very Japanese, very weird. I mean it is like the latest FF games or any JRPG really where it feels a bit animation first, I hate it when a character moves before the camera. I don't feel like I'm engaging in great combat and it being skilful, I feel like I'm just bugging out the A.I or trying to find and exploit.

I just don't get why it is so popular, it controls so poorly, it is so fixed animation based like all Japanese games are... why? We should be able to move freely and aim where we want. Dead Rising was the same, killing zombies was boring because for one there are no physics (again no Japanese games have physics) and so everything is animated, you cannot aim where you want, you cannot chop off limbs like Dead Island... no instead you hit a button and kill 10 zombies and they all animate to death and fade away.

I just hope Mount and Blade 2 comes out at some point because no one is doing what they're doing and the online is so good, 150 players fighting for a keep is just so much fun. I cannot believe how popular the online still is, maybe one day they'll bring it to PS4 and show you console people how games should really be done.

Animation Priority is a deliberate design decision. If your unable to adapt to that, then it doesn't mean the game is bad. You just don't like the amount of commitment it demands in each attack. You would probably like action games with animation canceling, like Metal Gear Rising: Revengence.

Mount and Blade is great, but I don't see the point in comparing the 2, they're very different.

@scaramoosh: Attacks being "animated" is an integral part of the combat. Knowing how fast your attacks come out, what area they occupy, and how long there recovery is on hit, block, or whiff is part of what makes the Soul's games stand out from other third person action games.

I don't know what you mean by "animation first" and I really haven't noticed anything about the character moving independently of the camera.

How would a game not have "fixed animations"?

True, but to be fair, Pokemon Snap had the benefit of following the framework that games like Ballz 3D and Leisure Suit Larry laid down for it. Metro 2033 is just a modern-day Yoshi's Cookie.

I've just finished up eating some ice cream, and I'm inclined to agree. Though, to be fair, I eat ice cream far more often than I do lasagne, so there may be a bias there.

@generalbison: Gang beasts doesn't have fixed animations, that's one example. In DS2, all animations are animated, in M&B there is a mix between animation and physics. When swords collide in M&B it looks somewhat more natural than in DS2 because there it's basically about block or no block. In M&B it's about blocking exactly where the dude's sword is by angling your shield or sword according to the incoming blow.

Is mount and blade better than dark souls? Maybe, but I'm pretty darn sure bacon is better than both.

Really though while they're two takes on "semi-realistic" combat there's not enough in common between them to compare.

Wait ... no Japanese games have physics? Last time I played Dark souls it had physics ... and I am not going to list a stupid long list of titles that do outside that.

I prefer Fighter Maker over Mount and Blade. The animation is much better and it has the best physx.

I really like Warband. I think it has some of the best medieval melee combat around. But I don't consider it to be comparable to the Souls games since they were built for different experiences, i.e. fighting against mainly AI opponents. Monster Hunter's combat is more comparable to the Souls and Chivalry to Warband. The latter 2 being more pvp oriented and semi-realistic.

But Samurai Showdown V Special has better combat than all of these games!

PSA: Despite the fact that they are both owned by CBSi, Giant Bomb and GameFAQs are not the same.

IMHO shampoo is just like vinegar in that it sucks when you use it as a hammer. Coffee tables on the other hand are so precise and feel so good, I've used one on and off for four years now.
