Mass Effect 3 came very close, but the last game that truly amazed me was Dark Souls, the whole way though i felt wide eyed wonderment, and genuine fear and elation at some of the encounters in the game. Mass Effect 3 had story elements that made me feel that way, but the gameplay never got me the same way Dark Souls got me at pretty much every corner, awesome game
The last game would have to be Portal 2. I played it this April that just passed. I've played some pretty good games since then but that game is just leagues ahead of anything. It's amazing.
But I played Dead Space 2 after Portal 2 so I guess that counts as the last amazing game because god dammit, that game was incredible.
Besides that, I can't count The Walking Dead because we have 2 more episodes.
That would be Deadly Premonition. It was last month, I think, that I finished it. When I was getting close to the end, I was determined to stay up until I was done. Can't remember the last game that so engrossed me to the point I had difficulty putting down the controller, so I give such a label out sparingly in my old age. But that game was so much more than I had expected.
Spec Ops: The Line. It was the first time I actually felt terrible for doing bad things in a video game. For that, I applaud it.
Mass Effect 3. The scope of that game just blew me away. Despite the way it turned out, having a feeling that you saved someone's life in those adventures was chilling and left me feeling enriched.
Most assuredly, Amnesia: The Dark Descent.
I'm going to go ahead and say Shadow of the Colossus, even though there have probably been a few games after that that would qualify.
I don't think I've ever been as immersed in a game as I was when playing SotC. I just felt it. The lonely planes, the journey to the last Colossus and the events after the fact. I felt like it was as much my story as it was Wander 's.
As the credits rolled I took my time to just reflect on what the hell just happened and how a video game could be so powerful. I was positively sad and absolutely satisfied.
Dust: An Elysian Tail - such a beautiful experience, and one that reminded me of the magic and charm some video games can have. A Fidget plushie would also be awesome at some point.
Deus Ex: Human Revolution
The level design isn't as good as the original's, but it's still a fantastic experience.
If we're going by the most recent then I have to go with Spec Ops: The Line as others have mentioned.
The gameplay is the most generic third person shooter one can imagine, but they made it up in every other aspect of it's presentation that I just don't care. When I think back on that title how it played will be the last thing I remember about it, in the same way one does when recalling Bioshock.
Uncharted 2 had some great fuck yea moments. Before that probably Metal Gear Solid 3. I'm sure I'm probably forgetting something though. My favourite game of all time is Skyrim but you can't really finish it and there is no point in that game that makes you go WOW like that. My favorite games are RPGs and rarely get that reaction as they are slow burns. Games I walk away from being blown away by are normally games with a lot of spectacle but may not be the best games in hindsight, like Uncharted 2.
In the last 10 years only the barest handful of games have made me want to stand up and shout about how great they are. The Witcher (original) is probably the most recent example, but even that is years ago now.
Prior to that, the only real candidates would be The Orange Box games (Portal, HL2: Ep2 and TF2), and then Psychonauts, Grim Fandango, HL2, Baldur's Gate, Planescape, Ico and SOTC before that. I agree with whoever said that the current gen has been lacking in 'masterpiece' material. Max Payne 3 came close but just doesn't have that x-factor; Bastion was really nice but the gameplay and level design was a little too much on the basic side; Spec Ops just doesn't deserve to be mentioned alongside most of the other games mentioned in this thread, I completed it 3 days ago and have already forgotten most of it. I guess I have to check out The Walking Dead, but man I have had my fill of zombies twenty times over by now.
I think an honourable mention should go to Codemasters racing games up to and including DiRT 2, but Racedriver: GRiD in particular. Thing is, it feels wrong to say 'masterpiece' about sports games for some reason, probably because they require no emotional investment. It's just pure kinetic action. Still, I think they're about as good as that kind of game can possibly be.
Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet was pretty amazing, Binary Domain will replace that as the most recent one if it can keep up its pace.
Probably Saints Row the Third, which I bought over the Summer Steam sale. I have invested hours into every lauded open-world game from GTA4 to RDR and hated each experience. To me, all those games fell drastically short of their lofty goals and ideals due to limitations of the genre and generally poor gameplay design. Because of this, I was immediately prepared to dislike SR3 but decided to check it out anyways because A) I wanted to know what all the fuss was about and B) it was pretty cheap.
Long story short, I was blown away by the game. They had tightened it up in the places they could, namely the shooting, while fully embracing all the over-the-top jank inherent to the genre. I had a blast and ended up losing a lot of sleep to late-night play sessions. Now I can't see purple without feeling an urge to steal a car or DDT someone.
While the game isn't a masterpiece; I was left feeling awesome when I finished Sleeping Dogs. I labeled the game as trash before it even came out. I ended up picking it up, and I was like, "DAMN, THAT WAS ACTUALLY GOOD." I guess never judge a book by its cover.
I had picked up the Metal Gear Solid Collection for the Xbox and played Metal Gear Solid 3 for the first time so it'd be that. But a more recent game would be Xenoblade.
