some of you guys may know that my country have been  discussing a law against videogames. Well the law has been approved and will become  validity in 3 month from now. i want to show here some of the content.

No Caption Provided

for the purposes of this Act is defined by

1. warlike videogames: those games or programs usable on personal computers, arcade systems, game consoles, handheld devices or mobile phones and other electronic or telematic device, which symbolize contain information or images that promote or incite violence or use of weapons.

No Caption Provided
chapter 3
sanctions

Article 13. who by any means  promote the purchase or use of warlike videogames and war toys, defined by this Law shall be punished by a fine of two thousand to four thousand tax units

Article 14. who imports, manufactures, sells, rents or distributes video game war, shall be punished with imprisonment from 3 to 5 years

the penalty provided in this article and imposed by a final decision, involves the confiscation and destruction of war  video games  and war toys

-----------

i'm not and expert but this law is more severe and ambiguous than for example the anti-drug law or the law against carrying a weapon ,  In this country there is no separation of powers, so what have been already approved by the president no one will contradict it.

1 tax unit = 46 bsf =  7,6 USD
2000 tax units =   92000 bsf =  15333 USD

so any game I try to import after March, can lead me to jail for 3 to 5 years , and if i successfully get it they can charge me 15000 $ when they catch me playing it.

at least here, the police o every one who can screw me are very  inefficient and corrupt  but after all i will be very fucked

with nothing more to ad i wish you  a Merry Christmas and a happy new year

ps:sorry my crappy English :(

I declare war upon Venezuela. This is what happens when you censor war games: WAR BECOMES REAL.

I thought that had already been approved, but it definitely sucks. I have my doubts that such a restriction will actually have its intended effects of reducing violence anyway, since pretty much any legitimate study has found no direct link.

Wow, Welcome to a Police State.
I want to say just move, But there are obviously reasons why you dont want to do that.

This is pretty extreme though, I thought the prohibition and censorship of games such as in Australia was bad enough,
But this just takes it to a whole new level, Multi year prison terms and Huge fines.....
I honestly dont know alot about Venezuela, Is there a specific reason they name for bringing in laws like these?

That's a pretty....over the top to be honest. I mean, being sent to jail for importing a game for 3 to 5 years? Sweet hell, that's just insane. And we thought Australia had it rough. That sucks big time man.

Thank God I live in the USA. Even if the government is going to hell with the new president and all, at least I still have my freedom. Well, alot of it's going away with the new president and all, like our 1st and 2nd ammendments to the Constitution.

I always figured that a country like Venezuela would have some sort of ridiculous law against violent video games. Sorry man. Sucks to be you.

You have to be pretty ignorant of Hugo Chavez's Venezuela to think this, of all things, is the straw that broke the camel's back and now suddenly its a police state. Seriously, read a news story not involving video games once and a while. This is like finding out Iran bans games with nudity.

I'd love a citation on this that isn't just masked racism culminating in hysteria which leads to arms shortages that you blame on the president. Its like telling yourself the president will stop farming apples then stockpiling apples till we have an apple shortage and telling yourself the shortage is because of the Muslim president's imaginary apple ban. So stupid.

That is awful. :(
Hopefully that'll change soon... although I'm not familiar with how the laws work in your country.

Oh, wow. Sorry, man. The rest of the world seems to be on the brink of video game banishment, as well. I bet if Palin was president here in the US, we would already be seeing bills put up for approval.

Yeah.  I mean, I'm probably more conservative than the average Giantbomb member and I didn't vote for Obama, but so far the man's doing a pretty good job.  My first and second amendment rights haven't been infringed at all.  The very fact that ADTR_ZERO (not to mention people like Bill O'Reilly, Glen Beck, Rush Limbaugh, etc) can say all sorts of crazy talk without fear of reprisal from the government pretty much shows that the 1st amendment is secure.

As for Venezuela, that law looks pretty ambiguous.  It could be used to ban almost any game that the government decides to be banned.  Of course, Hugo Chavez was pretty mad over Mercinaries 2, if I remember correctly.

yeah i think that will be the "lucky" part of all this sh3t, there is no one who can watch me playing god of war 3 or halo reach at my home,  and i think they will not look for videogames on everyone packages on the airport, well i hope that >_> , but the videogames stores/sellers are very fuck up, i guess the prices will go insanely high (the prices are  high already) , and the piracy will rise a lot again. maybe i will keep you informed when the law comes full power on 3 months.

ps: yes my country have some real heavy political/social issues but this is a videogames web, a post related to all the government issues will be totally of topic.

must suck living in a socialist/communist country.

I just (at my workplace) read the rules for exporting documents/books to Vietnam. Practically everyting must be sent via the Cultural Department for censorship.
