I finished a game!

I finished and submitted "The 'Great' British Weather" for Ludum Dare 25 in less than 48 hours. I am quite pleased. All details on it can be found here.

However if you just want to get on with it and try my game - first you'll need this to run XNA games - and then grab my game HERE! [Word of warning, some stupid XNA bug appeared when I compiled it, if you click off of the game window and leave it for more than a few seconds the game will go unresponsive. Ironically my game continues running, you just cannot interact with it or see any updates. So don't click off it! :P ]

Timelapse of the whole 2 days in a mere 3 minutes below (feel free to mute looping music.)

Screenshot 2 - 11 hours in.
Screen 1 - 5 hours in.

The theme for the Ludum Dare was "You are the villian!" Being British, I decided to take an every day villain to be my player - the weather. You take control of a cloud hovering over a group of festival goers. You must blow wind, rain and lightening on them enough to ruin their day; but don't scare them off! You can't have any fun without anyone's day to mess up.

About me...

This will be my first game jam, as well as my first Ludum Dare. I'm a Computing student in the UK, and I'll be streaming from my campus along with some other guys who are also taking part!

My first game NeutronCraft recently came as a runner up in the Raspberry Pi Summer Programming Contest, and was even mentioned on BBC News!

Was [Live] now for Ludum Dare 25!

Check out my Twitch account for an archive of me programming. For a long time.

@Chavtheworld: Don't mention it :)

So, how are things going so far?

I'm having the stream open in the background while studying for exams (I'm a Computing student as well, though in the cold north of Sweden) :)

Going better than expected! I'll update the original post with some information on what I'm trying to make. Didn't realise the stream just went down! I'm grabbing lunch anyway. Is there any sound on the stream? I want it to pick up my webcam microphone but I'm new to this livestreaming stuff.

Also thanks for the support :)

I am really like the pixelated design of the game! It really works for the game.

cool stuff. i'm in my first year of comp sci just learning this stuff now. i just finished a course in which we had to make a flash game, and i absolutely hated using flash. how is visual studio compared to something like game maker?

This is actualy in C#, using XNA. It's pretty similar to Visual Basic though. Compared to game maker you will find yourself writing a lot more code than just snapping things together :P But once you learn to program in any language really it's pretty easy to switch to another.

@Ramone: I HATE YOU

All done and dusted, try my game!

Watching this sort of video makes me wish I hadn't quit learning programming.

I'll check out your game as soon as I am back on a Windows machine, which should be sometime tomorrow (or today, if you're GMT or later).

Pretty cool! Makes me sorta wish I recorded my process as well. Though I took extended breaks in between my sessions, I think from start to finish I might have taken roughly two days as well. Doing something simple really helps and finishing something is awesome as well. Though that quote is really true that a game is never finished, just abandoned -_-;;

Awesome! I love it :) I've always loved the idea of game jams, they end up neat.

Programming is great fun, it's different every time. (Which sadly also means it breaks differently every time :P)

Yeah I prepared a bunch beforehand to make sure I could document the process well. Wish I had captured more than 1 screen a minute though! Also that quote is kinda sad, but pretty true.

Thank you! There are a swathe of great games coming out of this, for example I just played "Kittenzilla 3," which is so awesome. Seriously, go play it.
