Me and my friend were arguing over which game was better. He went out of his way to say that not only was LTP better than Ocarina but that Ocarina was complete shit............... While that is his opinion I consider him to be wrong, both are excellent games, I don't really know how you can say otherwise. Either way I prefer Ocarina to LTP but both of them are great.
I really liked Ocarina of Time where is I'm not that fond of A Link to the Past.
Link to the Past, easily. It's not even close in my mind.
I find that LTTP is a tad overrated.I mean it was a very polished top down Zelda game, but it really didn't have the same level of narrative, scope, or writing that Ocarina of Time did. I'm not saying that Ocarina had amazing writing or anything, but in an objective way I find it to be pretty much superior in every way to LTTP.
Ocarina of Time, easily. But both are great.
OoT is only fun when you're breaking the shit out of the game with glitches. Otherwise it's kind of boring where as ALttP is a more complete and polished game.
Though the real answer is Wind Waker.
Ocarina of Time is the better Zelda game overall, but not my favorite. The best one is Majora's Mask, yes that's right I said it! Come at me bro! lol.
Only problem is the games have not aged well, mainly due to the terrible design of the N64 controller.
The 2D Zelda games never did it for me like the 3D ones. It's not that I dislike them, but those games just don't give me the same high that I get from something like Ocarina of Time.
Link to the Past really set the standard for how all subsequent Zeldas were structured, and premiered a TON of items that are Zelda staples. I think both games still stand up very well, but Link to the Past defined Zelda so thoroughly that it gets my vote.
A Link to the Past.
I'm not going to deny the continuing influence Ocarina of Time has on games made today but i too find it to be complete trash like every 3D Zelda games i've played.
2D Zeldas are the only one that matter to me.
Did you play Ocarina of Time when it first came out? Because OoT was among the first 3D games I ever played, and it totally blew my mind!

Yes i did and hated it. And i wanted to like it, i don't go into games with the idea of hating them. None of the 3D Zelda games ever clicked with me. In fact the only classic Nintendo franchise that kept me on board after the transition to 3D is Mario. Super Mario 64 is easily my favorite one of the franchise and now i actually greatly dislike the "New" Super Mario games. Zelda and Metroid stopped being fun for me once they went 3D.
Link to the Past. I prefer 2D Zelda games, and LTTP was just a perfect game to me. I actually would even argue for Link's Awakening as one of the best, if not the best, Zelda game, but I bet some people would call that opinion crazy-pants, so LTTP it is.
You can reasonably argue for both games but calling one complete shit? Please punch your friend for me.
Also the best Zelda is obviously Majora's Mask but hey

This; I would say Link's Awakening is my favourite Zelda. Also, I'm just going to say that 3D games from the 90s just seem absolutely woeful now.
As much as I love LttP, OoT was much more mind blowing for me back in the day.
@jay_ray: My first was actually neither. So how does that work?
Ocarina for me. Seeing Zelda go 3D was pretty mind-blowing at the time. It also feels more epic and complete. LTTP is awesome, though.

Then it'll be 3D first or 2D first will determine which you prefer but that will only if you were 15 or younger. 16 or older for your first Zelda is a crap shoot on which you'd prefer.
alttp is fantastic! Its just not the best! I vote OoT. It was more 'epic'.
TBH one thing I love about Oot is just travelling around the world. 'waking up' after saving at home or in the Temple of time and then journeying to you destination. I loved kind navigating by detouring via Lost woods to use a shortcut to death mountain and then making my way down to the village, or riding epona on the field.
In SS they said they felt it was too empty and wanted it to be more puzzle based. But i feel SS went too far. I miss the OoT feel :)
@jay_ray: What if I played Zelda 1 first? Except I ain't no crazy person like Jeff and his "NES Metroid was better than Super Metroid" nonsense and realized ALttP was way better?
I... can't... choose... Especially if you're asking me which game was better in it's heyday, but I suppose if you asked me which game is better today I'd say LttP holds up more than OoT.
I've still never actually beaten LttP though. I should do that damn it. Although my old crt tv which had all my non hd consoles in it done blew up earlier this week. Well it didn't actually blow up but it did die and start beeping like a bomb was going to go off until I unplugged it last time I tried to turn it on.
Both games are excellent and innovative for their eras, but I think I prefer A Link To The Past. I enjoyed the art style and the sense of place more. Also, I felt the world-switching mechanic was easier to use than either the ocarina or the time-switching mechanics in Ocarina of Time.
I have never beaten A Link to the Past, which probably makes me a bad person, and thus by default: Ocarina of Time.
Majora's Mask and Wind Waker are both better
OoT was absolutely amazing when it released and still holds up very well to this day. All of my and my brother's friends were constantly playing or talking about it during the first few months it came out. Don't ever remember another game besides perhaps CoD4 having that effect.
OoT. Objectively, that's the best Zelda game. It had the most impact and the most influence of any game since the original Legend of Zelda.
I absolutely love both and it is really hard to pick. I think I give it to a link to the past. That game sealed the deal on me becoming a gamer. I also play a full run of it every year where as ocarina I only visit every few years. Also like others mentioned I think it holds up better.
Most people’s opinions on this seem to boil down to nostalgia. That said, I like Ocarina of Time more — I played LttP again a few years ago and thought it felt kind of soulless compared to Ocarina of TIme.
The lack of love for LTTP is super disheartening. Ocarina of Time is incredibly overrated, and hasn't aged very well.
I know that LTTP is the right answer, but it never hooked me like Ocarina did. I think it's because it was before my time. Kind of sucks to know that the SNES is the golden era for games, but I just don't have the frame of reference to enjoy the classics like I would've if I played them when they came out.
Majora's Mask. Fuck the haters. Come at me, bro. #YOLO etc. etc.
