Love Giant Bomb, hate entitled asshats

You know, I used to think that Giant Bomb had a collection of some of the greatest members around but more and more, with Patrick hate, ER whining, Alex on the Bombcast bitching ect ect ect the community as a whole has turned to shit. Oh well, site is still rad...it's just the people ruining it. I think it started with the memberships, I like the memberships and being part of the site and helping to fund something I LOVE but is has created a group of entitled asshats that think that if they wave a membership around and complain like bitches every time they dislike something that it will be changed...instead they are just ruining it for everyone and I am sad.

Just ignore the forums/comments as much as you can. Its what I do and I rarely ever see any bitching.

Not really GB's fault, as much as it is just the internet doing what it does best.

The internet is for porn and bitching about stuff.

Just ignore all the dumb threads.

And watch some porn.

Compared to real life you are absolutely right. Compared to the rest of the internet, the GB community is practically a nunnery.

You're complaining about people who complain about staff members and then you complain about a staff member... That seems rather stupid... Well, at least we have similar opinions in that I hate people who complain about staff members too!

@Djratchet: Oh I agree, I just feel like a few years back it was the small group of pissants overshadowed by the awesome users just letting them know that they are stupid but welcome to the site anyway. It seems to have flipped now, if because of the site's continued success or memberships or just the internet being the internet or a combination of these things. I'm just sad is all, it really sucks when Ryan and Alex are on Twitter on Bombcast day already throwing up the flame shields...seems like it must suck for the duders to take all this shit for nothing.

It is a weird community. I spent a month making a machinima series (6 months planning) and since I am not in it for monetary gain, I had no advertising budget. So what do I do, I make a thread on Giant Bomb about it saying "hey guys, I make shit for people like you for free. You don't have to watch, but would be nice if you did, consider it a gift to the community".

However, this is aparently advertising and all I get is hate from people and then the thread is closed. In contrast, I posted the same thing on gametrailers.com, perhaps my least favorite game comunity ever, and got lots of people watch it and positive reaction to the video itself and general support for my extremely difficult hobby.

Thanks a fucking lot Giant Bomb community. Good to see you looking out for the little guy.

I must have missed something. What do subscriptions have to do with criticizing Patrick? Without subscriptions, people wouldn't have any criticism? Or without subscriptions, the complaining wouldn't be whining? Or is it that complaining about anything of any sort under any conditions is bad, because no business wants feedback from its customers?

Also, there are something like 100,000 users on GiantBomb. You don't expect them all to be absolutely perfect as to your liking, do you? It is nearly impossible to achieve that with any sort of substantial community size, unless you enforce really tight restrictions on joining and treat it more like a secret club (and even then, it usually doesn't work).

I have to agree completely. When I arrived in 2009-ish folks were downright pleasant; that's why I stayed. But more and more of the community has become vitriolic. Quite depressing, as I was hoping not to have to move on again for another couple of years.

And I'll take this moment to apologize for any posts that have come off as antagonistic or vitriolic. I'm actually a pretty nice guy. Usually.

Just curious do you think it's the older/original members whining or a wave of new guys doing it? I can never really tell. Also I completely agree. A lot of the people who demanded an ER for so long are now the people complaining that Ryan and Patrick are 'doing it wrong'. It beggars belief how people can have this sort of attitude or at least it would if I wasn't so used to the internet.

I feel complaints levied against staff that continue to clog up the forums and comments are are the most pointless drivel ever. Infuriating every time.

@Ramone: Not sure really, I'm of the opinion that it isn't a matter of new/older users but more a thing of "I'm paying money for this website they better do the things I want or grr!" I don't know for sure but it seems like that sometimes. The ER thing especially. I for one have laughed more at the ER antics this time around then most thing going on (though still quality all around) so I don't know why people are angry except that it's not the same ol same ol and grr internet rage for no real reason.

Fucking hell.  Cry more, people in this thread.  Maybe there are more complaints because there is more to complain about? Crazy theory I know.

This. And It seemed a hit at members. Why the distinction..especially after the bitching i've seen lately over video quality and such..(some of which was okay but....)

I got kinda pissed off when some guy said on the forums something like " Since the community is what keeps Giantbomb alive why don't we get to pick the next endurance run". So frigging dumb, sure you can make suggestions and give feedback but we don't control this website.

@SniperXan: The rest of the site is different, but not much better. There are 2 types of people there. People trolling, and people trying to look like they are smart. because of this, the place is a battleground full of flame bait and schoolyard insults as people try and come out superior.

This is why i expected to get flamed. Have someone recite the rules to me and act like I am dumb for not reading 5 pages of them. GT is always ready to jump on shit and flame it to death, no matter what, Giant Bomb seemed relaxed and groovy. But GT strangely gave me a chance and GB guys we just stuck up assholes. I find it weirdly ironic that they are coming to Giant Bomb because it is smaller, less commercial and more personalised as game sites go, yet when someone spends a month making something for them with no intentions of making money off it, somehow posting it on these boards is offensive to them. It made no sense, I haven't posted any of my videos since. They have found a decent sized audience regardless, but would have been nice to get the support from people here.

It's real easy not to read comments on the Internet; there are even extensions for your browser that hide them for you! Ignore the community and just enjoy the content the staff provides if seeing stuff like that is negatively affecting your enjoyment of the site.

Yeah I kind of see why some people don't like Alex, but I don't understand the Patrick hate at all.

Unfortunately the bitching and moaning, as well as the moaning about the bitching and moaning, is a bi-product of the site getting bigger.

The content is still great on the site, the user interaction is still as great as it ever has been and the transparency of the staff at Whiskey Media is still down-right refreshing. And there's all the dumb shit they do that just makes me laugh. So long as that doesn't change, I'm not too bothered what happens in the comments sections and forums.

Maybe some people appreciate the site's original crew more? Maybe some people feel like Alex and Patrick both have annoying, out of place, somewhat grating personalities that bring the overall quality of the videos and pod-casts down? Maybe some people feel Alex in particular isn't really qualified to write about video games on a professional level, and that most of his articles are nothing but overly verbose filler pieces anyway? Maybe this is the internet and bitching about nothing kind of comes with the territory? Maybe man...maybe.

@OtakuGamer: To be honest...we are entitled...we are entitled to what they offered us in our membership...that is the extra content, True HD on the site, the nifty medal on the forums, the shirts and merch sales for only premium members. No where on the page that has what's included in a membership does it say, "a role as a producer", They get paid to review and report on games and the gaming industry. If you don't like the way the content is going you don't have to be a premium member that way your paying 0 dollars and if you disagree, its of no monetary loss to you. If they want to show shit for the rest of their lives they can but they will lose membership and money. So you're wrong to think that just because you play them 5 dollars a month your entitled to tell them how to run THEIR business. In America, you have the right to choose what to do with your money just as much as they have a right to put what they want on their site.

Well they aren't going anywhere. You dislike them. Ok.

But they work at whiskeymedia so find a way to enjoy giantbomb around them besides saying "annoying, out of place, somewhat grating personalities..." because that is who they are. You either have to act as an adult and ignore them or comment on actual content they provide such as articles, as you did. So stop complaining on nothing that can be improved. Pointless.

This man/woman/I don't know speaks the truth. Just because you pay for Premium content doesn't mean you get to dictate how the site is run. If you want to do that, go buy shares in whiskey media then you'll be entitled. Isn't it fun to learn everyone?
