If it's a "serious" game--Skyrim, Fallout, Mass Effect--I play as my own sex, male. My choices are also as close to honest as possible.

If it's not, I'll play either, depending on the voice actors. I was female for most of Saints Row 3.

If the experience changes between sexes--again, Fallout, Mass Effect--my second playthroughs are with the opposite sex as the first.

Unless I'm forced to play as a female, I always pick the male.

I break it about 50/50. Certain franchises I do male, others female. Mass Effect (default Shep and I stuck with him throughout) and Fable are both male, Dragon Age and Kingdoms of Amalur are both female, for example. I'm trying to think of other games where you create a character from scratch and I'm sort of blanking. Saints Row I've always been a guy, but then I got Saints Row 2 for PS3 through Playstation Plus and I decided to be a woman when I replayed the game. Elder Scrolls and Fallout games, I was male in all of those. Oh man, I do use dudes a lot. I'm going to have to fix that.

I like to look at girls, probably some dark screwed up psychological reason that has to do with me having control over women, but I'll chalk it up to my preference to look at girls rather than guys, even if they are digital ;)

Always depends. If it's something akin to an MMO where your character is your 'avatar' in interactions with other players, I go with male. Otherwise, it can be a toss-up. Depends on what kind of character idea is in my head at the time.

On second playthroughs, I almost always pick the opposite of what I did before.

Male. How am I supposed to role-play a female? Besides, I wouldn't take the game seriously if I spent the entire game trying to find a skanky wardrobe for my female character.

Female, as I like to create evil females that destroy the world. If I have a choice I play evil females and good males. Wonder what that says about my perspective on things..

Male because I am a male and statistically speaking the amount of females that would participate in the kind of action generically presented in the style of games I prefer is comparatively small. Also the female models generally have overly large breast and asses which usually isn't a sign of the solid physique that a women would need to maintain to keep up with generally male focused activities presented in said genres(It could be don't get me wrong but muscular female pecs and glutes don't have that level of jiggle physics).

I really do enjoy "well written"(<-this part is rare) strong self sufficient female supporting characters, I'd just rather play a male protagonist 99% of the time.

TL:DR I play males almost always, and consider playing females if they actually look the part/second play-through blah blah...

Do you also have a health bar? Do you have a run button or can you auto-run?

Are you snarky? Oh, wait you actually are!

People play games to get into something they normally couldn't. You don't play Call of Duty because you hate war, you play it because you want to dick around in a military fantasy. So it makes sense, especially considering most games that you can pick your gender are role playing, that people would pick the gender that most closely fits your own.

But it's totally not silly for people to care about the type of ass they will be looking at.

Stop looking at your characters ass and play the damn game ya perverts.

I just kinda go with whoever looks cool. Usually a dude because I'm also a dude. But there have been a good few times that the lady option was cooler than the male version so I went with that.

I hate Male Shepard's awful voice actor, and dig the idea of fem shep, so that's the way I usually role in Mass Effect, for example.

I tend to play ladies in Elder Scrolls games, not really sure why.

Honestly though, if I have the option, I usually make enough characters to dip into both pools.

I usually pick female just because i tend to like female voice acting better than male. Male voice acting tends to just be gruff voiced action hero, whereas i think female voice acting lends a better dynamic to the character.

It kind of depends on the game to be honest. Since I'm a guy I gravitate toward males a little more (especially for a first playthrough), but any game that gives you that option I usually end up playing both eventually. I can't think of any game where I refused to play one over the other, except for Mass Effect 3, since by that point I didn't care about my male Shepard anymore.

Usually for games like Mass Effect, Borderlands, Skyrim and Dragon Age, I pick the male character.

Fighting games, however, varies. I always seem to gravitate more towards female characters in Tekken and Street Fighter because their moveset pretty much fits my play style. I never was a fan of Ryu, Guile, Jin Kazama or Paul Pheonix.

Give me Chun-Li and Ling Xiaoyu and I'm fine.

I usually play male through the single-player campaign, but for some reason I tend to pick female for the multi-player (like in ME3). And for fighting games, I'm always Ken. Doesn't matter what game it is. I'm Ken.

Male, even in non story driven games, most games just have grotesque female models, eye bleaching is fine and all but when something is simply out of proportion due to wanting to pander to the demographic of /a/, yeah but no... thank you very much.

Most games that don't fall into the above category are RPG's that take themselves half seriously and in those, for story reasons, i like to pick same-sex.

The only game where I have more female characters than males ( actually it might be the only one where i have at all ) is WoW because FUCK YEAH FEMALE DWARF !!!, being part of the 1% gives you that unique hipster felling.

A lady because I am a lady. The only time I deviated was when I picked a male on my renegade play through of the first Mass Effect. I guess I had to make it as different from my first, totally paragon play through as possible.

I used to pick Males exclusively. Not only that, but I thought something was wrong with any guy would want to play a female in a video game. Now, after many years of gaming, and tiring of the same ole thing I almost always choose female. although I must admit I get a little creeped out when dudes hit on me, or I am asked to choose my type of makeup.

For? Potential sexual activities or in video games?

I go female for both, in games ever since Rainbow Six: Vegas simply because it provided a huge advantage having a slightly smaller hit box.
