Only 740,000 units?!  I mean this game was suppose to be THE ONE, and it couldnt even break a million in its first month. Dont get me wrong I loved MGS4 and own a PS3 but I was very disappointed with the sales numbers, this game should have ATLEAST broke a million, what happened?

#2 Posted by DaveF (231 posts) -

I don't really see why it matters. I liked the game regardless. I suppose it affects the possibility of future games...
I'm not THAT surprised. I mean, is MGS really a game the casual gamer is going to buy, or know much about? I don't know.

Compared to games like COD4 (11 million) and Halo 3 (9 million)

Yeah, but its okay

The PS3 install base is still small, just gotta give it time

#4 Posted by bricewgilbert (177 posts) -

That doesn't include bundles. I suspect it's at least 900,000 with those.

#5 Posted by Guiltyspark (554 posts) -

thats pretty terrible

#6 Edited by SackBoy (11 posts) -

No that doesn't include console sales. Many more people would have bought the game seperate if it wasn't bundled. It was the best selling game of June. And the PS3 doubled its sales. Most likely many bought MGS4.

#7 Posted by Ghil (229 posts) -

and the more I see it, the more it makes me think of Resident Evil 4. It was a great game for a great console....it just didn't make enough sales, sadly.

#8 Posted by Turtlemayor333 (510 posts) -

I think considering how many people have PS3s it's an acceptable number.

#9 Posted by Atlas (2401 posts) -

1) Only about 8-10 million people own PS3's.
2) Metal Gear isn't exactly a mainstream friendly game.
3) Not a lot of people buy games in the summer compared to other times of year.

740,000 is actually a really good sales figure, considering points 1-3.

#10 Posted by Absurd (2934 posts) -

Meh, I think that's an awesome number

#11 Posted by Sharvie (93 posts) -

I think it's due to the fact not a lot of people have PS3s and it isn't as mainstream as Halo and crew.

#12 Posted by Stapler_Hernandez (129 posts) -

You mean more than twice as much as its predecessor, not including the 250k MGS4 bundles sold? What a failure!

Moron lol

#13 Posted by sdodd02 (722 posts) -

Alot less ps3's out there than 360 or wii, so numbers are going to be lower.

that is still incredibly terrible

compared to what?

#16 Posted by Bkorns4 (129 posts) -

I know i personally bought a bundle that came with the game, so i'm not sure if that counts for sales. Also it did come out in the summer. I bet it will sell a lot more in the holiday season for 2008. But with so many great games coming out im afraid the holiday season will be flooded like it was last year.

#17 Posted by goodwood (600 posts) -

Atlas the ps3 has only sold around 5 mil in the U.S. not 8-10 mil. the 740,000 is US only not worldwide.

#18 Posted by WilliamRLBaker (4777 posts) -

Yes its pretty bad, I mean cows sat and said it would sell millions in one day and secure the ps3 as the market leader. lol didn't happen.

#19 Posted by Vinchenzo (6192 posts) -

Let's stop talking about sales, and bring up the scores MGS4 received. 10 by GS, 5 stars from GB, etc. I did not personally like the game, but numerous people did. As mentioned, the PS3s in homes is a much smaller number than the other systems. At least in America.

In what way? Most games never reach even 250k in their LIFETIME sales. Selling 1 million in one month in the beginning of summer while its predecessor sold 300k in the fall/holiday season is terrible, right?

Oh guilty, your picture on that jetski still gives me nightmares.
#21 Posted by BlackWaterCO (1574 posts) -

anything below 700,000 this gen is not profitable

#22 Posted by Killuminati (93 posts) -

It was near 1 million sold if you count the bundles. Impressive numbers if you ask me.

#23 Posted by Monty_The_Great (178 posts) -

Really only a little below what I thought it would sell, I figured it would be closer to a million. Still that is a lot of sales.

TC your avatar has made me dissapointed in your posting, remind me never to be polite to you again

#26 Posted by I_smell (3925 posts) -

Y'know what'd make it sell more? If I could buy it for 360. Then it'd sell at least one more for sure, cos I'd buy it.

sony spend more money then god on MGS4

you have to be retarded if you think MGS4 is profitable at 700k
#28 Posted by ParanoidFreak (1461 posts) -

I think more people will start to get it when the PS3 starts to get more popular (if that ever happens).

#29 Posted by Cadmus (290 posts) -

It's a bit more than 700k if you count systems sold with the game TC, but yeah, I think that's a poor number.  But what do you expect?  MGS has always been a niche market.  Great game and great series though.

#30 Posted by albaker (437 posts) -

Yes a little low for a game THAT big

#31 Posted by Evil_Eye (29 posts) -

Sales shouldn't matter - just enjoy the game, but if they are this low then sequels may not be made.

#32 Posted by Nightkiller93 (173 posts) -

MGS4 doesn't appeal too everyone so it was expected.

#33 Posted by DarkJak218 (6 posts) -

it's not terrible at all, especially since it got near 1 million with bundles. Plus, metal gear and ps3 are much more popular outside of the U.S.

#34 Edited by IMTHEONEKILLINU (75 posts) -

That number is from NPD which is US sales only and that translates to roughly 1/5th of all current console owners bought the game in the US since there's about 5 million consoles sold.  As mentioned, that doesn't count for bundles either, so IMO it's a great number.  Of course, there's little else to play so that both helps and hurts if you think about it.  Seems that it should be higher I suppose without there being more games to play on the system.

#35 Posted by somesthetic (191 posts) -

The sad part is, I bought 739,000 of those copies.

I was making a fort...

Thats a great point. 774,000 is only in America and does not count bundles. It is probably like 4-5 million worldwide counting bundles.
#38 Posted by Jechtshot78 (42 posts) -

Why do you give a flying rat how much a game sold?

#39 Posted by DreamsVisions (353 posts) -

Well it's the PS3...and PS3 owners still don't buy games. not at the same clip we see on other consoles.

#40 Posted by Chaos_Bladez (140 posts) -

EVERYONE: That DOES NOT include any bundles. That is just stand alone game. All the 80 gig PS3 bundle with MGS4 ISN'T included in that count.

#41 Posted by bricewgilbert (177 posts) -

Konami said they needed to sell 1 million to succeed with MGS4. They sold at least 900,000 in the US, and around 2.4 million if you count worldwide sales. I would say its a success. 1 million sales in the US when the PS3 has only sold maybe 5.4 million? That's pretty good.

Sony didn't develop or publish Metal Gear Solid 4.
#48 Posted by TurboMan (6964 posts) -

1. It's PS3 exclusive, theres not that many PS3's out there compared to 360's/Wii's
2. It caused a significant increase in sales
3. It sold well past 2 million(I think) Worldwide
4. doesn't include bundles/Limited Edition

plus, many will still buy it from now untill Holiday season

it's a success

#49 Posted by DukeTogo (1505 posts) -

It's been known for some time that MG isn't as popular a franchise as it appears.  From day one it alienated a lot of players with it's very distinct gameplay.  It sells very well and it's arguably the only franchise left that Konami gives a damn about anymore, but it's always had an over-inflated reputation when money left pockets.

MGS4 is a good game, but it's proven that it didn't have the gravitas to sell the number of PS3s many thought it did, and the number of PS3 owners that ignored it as well only cemented that fact.

It reminds me of Metroid Prime 3, a great game that came and went, with crappy sales and the only reason being that the audience that wanted it wasn't the huge Wii demographic buying mini games.  Just like most PS3s are BD players instead of game consoles.  The fans bought it - that is - the fans with PS3s bought it, the rest looked on waiting for the next Blu Ray movie to drop.

#50 Posted by Xelloss (213 posts) -

I think its a combination of things, for example the PS3 doesn't have as large of install base in the US.  Its a game that doesn't appeal to the mass market and it came out in June.  If this game was a Christmas game then it probably would of sold more copy's at launch.  Call of Duty 4 didn't sell 10 million copy's in its first day, and its on 3 platforms, PC, PS3 and Xbox 360.  Halo appeals to the mass market and so does GTA4.

I wouldn't be too worried about it because the game will sell more over time, probably in the 2-3 million mark.  Why, becuase those fans holding out will probably end up buying a PS3 when it comes out and will be picking this game up.
