Microsoft's Marc Whitten Talks Xbox One's Big Policy Changes
Really curious to see which direction developers go now with the use of Cloud. Do they make use of it and require always-online, or do they give the flexibility of offline by sacrificing the almighty power of the cloud?
Oh shit, I've been found out!

Good on them for doing the right thing. Bad on them for insulting their customers for the last month. They can kiss my ass and I'll hold on to my $500.
I don't think you even have $500 dollars.
What a fucking PR robot this guy is...
Politicians and business execs. They all speak the exact same way.
it's straight up disgusting, someone should update this dudes drivers and add some realtalk to that programming.
Maybe its just me being a business graduate, but people are way too harsh on PR people.
I don't know what you guys expect PR people and execs to do in these kind of situations. Do you want execs and PR people to respond the way MS people did few weeks a go and give different convoluting answers causing a PR disaster?
MS probably doesn't even know the answer to most of these questions and a lot of things are probably up in the air. Dude is trying to just do his job and not fuck up like ALL THE OTHER MS EXECS HAVE DONE the last few weeks. He is sticking to the script and buzz words, there are a very few people that can do PR and not sound like robots and still keep their jobs. One fuck up in this situation can be devastating for the company.
Don't get me wrong, dude does sound like a robot and he could do a better job at not sounding like one; but realistically he most likely is not able to give any clear answers even if he wanted to.
But yes you are right, politicians and business execs sound the same and they could use a driver update.
...WOW MS how about being honest once....
Whoa there, let's not get ahead of ourselves...
Man so many pouty pants up in here. Guys, have you never been in a fight with your girlfriend/wife? A lot of you are really starting to sound like a petty girlfriend who still complains after getting what she wants, it's kind of sad.
Personally I think it's about time for some violent makeup sex...
...WOW MS how about being honest once....

How so? Did you read their statement? That it was not some outrage over the past month? Or that they wanted to change that a long time ago already? Sony actually admitted they were wrong with the leadership of the PS3 and the Cell Architecture for example.
The only thing I want them to do is an apology like Sony did with the PSN outrage for example. Do that and everything will be forgiven. It will be remembered but also forgiven.

WOW even now MS is not admitting any fault. And planned for a long time? I totally call bullshit on that. Two days ago they defended this policy heavily but now it was planned a while ago to change these?.... WOW MS how about being honest once....
I think he was more saying that they had planned to gauge customer feedback at E3 and decide weather or not to change it afterwards. At least, that's how I interpreted it.
I'm still likely going to get a PS4, just because I'm worried Microsoft could pull something like this a few system updates down the line, and then where would we be?
I trust Sony more, just as a company... I also think Sony had a better showing in terms of games, especially looking at that launch lineup.

But 2 days ago they still defended this policy heavily. They even said they will never change it because of the backslash they have gotten at E3 and that the "normal" people do not care about stuff like that.
Eh, seeing a different name for the Microsoft interview and given the change of direction I'd assumed that some people with a little more personality had taken things over at Microsoft. Great questions but really strange, marketing speak answers.
Why change a policy and a supposed attitude if all you're able to do is roll out the same garbage answers and buzz words. It's just incredibly disappointing to read and personally just cements why I can't trust Microsoft this generation. The way he chooses to describe the day one update, that's just really, really bad PR. That's the thing, it's not that marketing is the problem - it's fucking terrible marketing that's the problem.
Oh and not sure if it's been mentioned @patrickklepek - pretty sure it's 'hunky dory' rather than 'honky dory' but not sure if you're just taking it all from a recording ;)
A lot of real non-answers, here. I appreciate all the questions asked, but it still kind of bugs me that some things weren't answered explicitly, such as offline functionality. Sure, people will probably be connected, and thecloudhas some cool stuff, but he didn't answer the question of offline. I live in an area with terrible Internet connectivity and play single-player games; I desperately wanted to know the answer to how this connectivity malarkey affects that experience.
I'd be cool giving you money, Microsoft, but you're not doing much to make me feel like giving you money. :(
I think it's pretty obvious that if you aren't online you can't reap the benefits of the cloud computing. Now whether that means you'll get a borked version of the game offline or no version at all isn't completely clear, but he did say it would be up to the publishers, which is technically enough of an answer. I'd guess with something like Titanfall you'd be pretty hosed, or at least I'm pretty positive it's a online only experience. Unless the developers change something.
I still dont understand this whole cloud thing. Is this just an all encompassing buzzword/term MS are calling being connected to their servers and playing online multiplayer games ?
it is basically dedicated servers developers can use and also upload AI behavior on the servers.
@ninetysevena: that's not a typo, it's an Experience
@manicmyna: The update is probably going to take it out since the DRM is already built into the system. I'm pretty sure most countries have laws against marketing your product a certain way than slipping in a software update that takes it all back. The scary thing is they could easily turn the DRM back on anytime in the future, say once physical game sales are completely dead or the market stops caring about these DRM policies.
Yeah, they have some neat ideas and we could see some cool features, and yeah a lot of people will play online - but it was the "our way or the highway" delivery that pissed me off the most.
Pop quiz: Microsoft was not able to respond to feedback until after E3 because:
a) They had their fingers in their ears screaming at the top of their lungs
b) They were actually shocked at what they were seeing
c) They really believed "GAMES GAMES GAMES" would sway public opinion
d) all of the above
Frankly my dear i don't give a damn.
Is Driveatar this generations "GRAW"??? Nobody liked saying it but it stuck for no good reason whatsoever.
Giant Bomb:So you royally fucked up with your DRM policy and now Sony has gained a head in public perception, how do you guys plan to make up that difference?
Mark Whitten: Cloud powered Drivatars will carry us to glory!!
Giant Bomb: Ummm.............
Don't call me Frankly! (this would be funnier if I were Leslie Nielsen)
Indeed, cause you'd be dead.
(Joking)
Well I don't love the Kinect or any of the 'experiences' I've had with it, it's a unnecessary add on that I know many of your core users that will buy Xbox One on the first day could do without. So please take it away and pass the savings down to the consumer. Do the right thing.
@ei8htbit: You would makeup with someone even after you found out their true intentions of something this incredibly heinous? You must have some pretty low morals and standards for what people can do to you.
Frankly I find it hilarious how this guy couldn't resist trying to slip in more of the great features that only X-Box One can offer. Even in an interview such as this where his only message should have been "We hear you, you're pissed, this is how we're going to try and make it right" it's in his blood to try put a spin on everything. I almost feel sorry for him but I'm sure he only got where he is today but completely believing what he's saying. Frankly that shows exactly why Microsoft have got themselves into this situation in the first place.
I dont know how patrick and other folks in the media dont go psycho when a person that agrees to be interviewed to answer questions gives you the most pathetic PR speak imaginable. The only person that seems to be able of saying yes or no these days is Shuhei Yoshida .
So now everything that made the Xbox One interesting is gone, all thanks to the angry, idiotic, mob that lashed out without thinking. So thank you, angry people, for ensuring that we went two steps forward and two steps back.
Exactly how I feel too. People love Steam and Xbox One seemed to be the console version of that so I don't get why people are up in arms about it. If you don't have internet in this day and age then there is something seriously wrong. I also get that some places around the world can't get internet but isn't that a very small minority at this point?

Did he really use the word "drivatars"?
That's what the Forza developers want to establish at least.
They first had a learning driver called Drivatar in FM1 back in 2005. You could name them (mine was an older German dude called Günther), teach them your driving style and then have them race for you in career mode. I believe they dropped it for subsequent releases, but it was a pretty cool feature and I'm glad they're bringing it back.
