The only soundtracks i ever though, hmm, i wouldnt mind buying some of that, was for for the first Taxi driver.
But i would never buy an actual soundtrack cd, just find the artist themselves and buy and support them instead.
MUST Have Video Game Soundtracks?
The Last Ninja trilogy for the C64 :-)
Well... It's not likely to have had a CD release, but the sid-files are widely available.
As for people mentioning Mass Effect and Oblivions soundtrack...
Personally I found Oblivions soundtrack to be very generic and Mass Effects soundtrack to be tiring - But then again... I figure the music in any game you play in 50+ hours is bound to get on your nerves.
"Yep, great old school gaming music
Golden Sun and Golden Sun: The Lost Age, both games have some of the best soundtracks ever made. "
The Medal of Honor OSTs are really great, especially the first few.
Prince of Persia if you can track them down.
Freedom Fighters, again if you can track it down.
Mirror's Edge.
Panzer Dragoon series, especially Azel.
The Primal soundtrack is really good, especially for a game that went by the wayside.
Lair has a score that far exceeds the quality of the game it was for.
And even though it isn't original music, the soundtrack to Braid is phenomenal.
I'm also a big fan of the Fable and Metal Gear Solid soundtracks.
Ah yeah, I didn't mean to sound like a prick or anything. I really can enjoy a good score for a game, Danny Elfman did a fantastic job with Fable, but it doesn't exactly liven up the party when the opening theme comes on the mix, you know? I mean as far as original music from a game I'm not at all embarassed to have play in front of friends Stubbs is the only one I got. Infact a few of my friends liked it so much they had to get it for themselves despite not being gamers or ever playing the game.
I don't much remember Shadow of the Colossus' soundtrack, but I do remember enjoying the game a lot and also attempting to hook up some speakers from the 70's to the TV... so it probably did something pretty damn well with sound. I do remember the theme MGS2 vividly though, I played a lot of that game, something like straight from an action film. I know people get touchy about the Halo series, but I have to admit I really enjoy the score to those games... not so much the Gears of War score though.
I liked Xenosaga 3's sound track quite a bit. And Silent Hill 3 has pretty good music too. Not "good for a nerdy game" good, but like, good as in I could listen to it driving my car with people around and not feel like a fool. That kinda good. Good relative to normal music as opposed to chiptuned opera and bad rock.
I really like The Witcher OST. Pawel Blaszczak and Adam Skorupa made some great music for that game in my opinion.
It's free to download as a separate part of the Enhanced Edition patch so check it out.
I LOVE the Half-life music, especially Episode 2! That's one of the few game soundtracks I think people could get into without experiencing the game." Silent hill game soundtracks are good Half life episode 2's soundtrack is really good killer instinct soundtrack is also good "
I also like many of the original post's picks. Hitman: Blood Money, Final Fantasy X, and Metal Gear Solid 2 (although I think MGS4 blows that one out of the water) especially. I think that the Halo soundtracks are well made and rousing, but the Halo storyline was always so lacking to me, that the songs don't stand out that much to me.
The thing about game soundtracks and movie soundtracks is that they're designed to enhance and contribute to another media. So to fully appreciate it I think you need to be a fan of the game. They can still be appreciated to an extent, but the soundtracks go hand in hand with the media they support in my opinion.
Like Final Fantasy X ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TSWWyCiX6E8)...I don't think there's anything especially AMAZING about the main theme. But for me, when I hear it I remember all my favorite moments in the game, and it becomes AMAZING to me.
My picks:
Metal Gear Solid 4
Half-life Series
Hitman: Blood Money
Final Fantasy X
I want to put Wrath of the Lich King and Wow in general, but it reminds me of how much time I sunk into that game that I'll never get back...
Edit: Wrong URL.
" I mostly like soundtracks to games that are very colorful, and as a result the music is rather jaunty and fun. Games like Banjo-Kazooie (all 3 of them), Super Mario Galaxy, Donkey Kong 64, and even the old Donkey Kong Country trilogy all have great soundtracks. I also have enjoyed the soundtracks for Ocarina of Time, Wind Waker, and Twilight Princess (Wind Waker is my favorite). Super Smash Bros. Brawl also has an awesome soundtrack. "Agreed!
The Uncharted games
Shadow of the colossus
Bioshock
Okami
Medal of honor allied assault & the first Call of duty
Quake/Quake 2
American Mcgees alice
Prey (bad game with a brilliant score)
Metal gear solid 2, 3 & 4
God of war 1&2
The first Gears of war (not the transformersified one in 2)
" @Kiemoe said:I agree, well I don't have it, but the soundtrack is still memorable."Stubbs the Zombie in Rebel without a Pulse Soundtrack "Yes this, the only video game soundtrack I have. "
I really want to get a hold of the Bioshock and Bioshock 2 soundtracks. Those violin songs are really good I think.
" I really want to get a hold of the Bioshock and Bioshock 2 soundtracks. Those violin songs are really good I think. "Didn't 2k release the Bioshock album for free when the game came out? I think they did so you might be able to find it floating about somewhere on the 'net.
" I really want to get a hold of the Bioshock and Bioshock 2 soundtracks. Those violin songs are really good I think. "The BioShock soundtrack was released for free a while ago.
In fact: Click for download.
I rather like the soundtracks for these games.
" @Madhattan said:"Yeah i know your soundtrack is good, but...""Silent Hill 2. Best soundtrack of all time!!! "
"
Silent Hill osts are really the best.
The Runaway games have also awesome sountracks, unfortunatly they aren't sell separatly or capable of play outside the game.
The Witcher has also a awesome soundtrack...
Castlevania also.
I never get tired of the RE: Code Veronica soundtrack.
Someone answer this for me please: Is the soundtrack for Modern Warfare 2 officially available anywhere?
Its fucking disgusting how nobody has mentioned Streets of Rage 1 and 2, the best original soundtracks of all time- hands down.
Nobuo Uematsus haunting compositions, arranged beautifully for the piano by Masashi Hamauzu and played with such emotion by Aki Kourada... It's one of the albums I've listened through most times and one I can always go back to...
You're kidding me, right? The SFII OST is iconic, but that doesn't mean its good. Every single SNK fighter ever made has a better soundtrack than SFII.
- Street Fighter 2 Soundtrack
The Fire Emblem series always has great soundtracks,as well as Resident Evil.
Blazblue Calamity Trigger is the best soundtrack I've heard in any fighting game.I still love Dead or Alive the most, but the soundtracks for DOA have some good with some bad.
And as always for Ninja Gaiden,Sigma 2's soundtrack is fuckin great. It's definitely on par with Ninja Gaiden Black.
